Dave Guingona, a 28-year veteran at ultra-albatross KRON, was fired by the station for what was termed "gross insubordination."
Guingona, who began working at the venerable SF independent in 1983, both produced, reported, and was one of the very first KRON air talents to work the notorious "VJ", (video-journalist) format. He was a longtime producer for Gary Radnich too, lining up guests for the "Sports Final" program and coordinating live shots from numerous Super Bowls, World Series, and local and national stadium shots.
"After 28 years of service to this station, 'this is what I get?", said a stunned and angry Guingona to me via phone.
Guingona was notified of the firing by a memo from station brass stating that he was let go because of "many down evaluation points" and among other things, his "e-mail inbox being full too many times." Huh?
"They warned me, but keep in mind that after 28 years at a TV station, obviously I'm going to have many contacts--what am I supposed to do?"
It should be pointed out two years ago, Guingona filed a "hostile work environment" action against the station through KRON's in-house personnel dept. Might this had had an impact on Guingona's ouster?
Guingona did not want to speculate, but draw your own conclusions.
Because he was fired "with cause", Guingona will not receive any severance. Not a penny, at least for now.
But he did indicate that he will be looking for an attorney.
