Dave Guingona, a 28-year veteran at ultra-albatross KRON, was fired by the station for what was termed "gross insubordination."
Guingona, who began working at the venerable SF independent in 1983, both produced, reported, and was one of the very first KRON air talents to work the notorious "VJ", (video-journalist) format. He was a longtime producer for Gary Radnich too, lining up guests for the "Sports Final" program and coordinating live shots from numerous Super Bowls, World Series, and local and national stadium shots.
"After 28 years of service to this station, 'this is what I get?", said a stunned and angry Guingona to me via phone.
Guingona was notified of the firing by a memo from station brass stating that he was let go because of "many down evaluation points" and among other things, his "e-mail inbox being full too many times." Huh?
"They warned me, but keep in mind that after 28 years at a TV station, obviously I'm going to have many contacts--what am I supposed to do?"
It should be pointed out two years ago, Guingona filed a "hostile work environment" action against the station through KRON's in-house personnel dept. Might this had had an impact on Guingona's ouster?
Guingona did not want to speculate, but draw your own conclusions.
Because he was fired "with cause", Guingona will not receive any severance. Not a penny, at least for now.
But he did indicate that he will be looking for an attorney.

ReplyDeleteLet's start a petition to fire Pero, Baier and Grief. Not one KRON employee would have reason to file a "hostile work environment" claim with those 3 clowns outta there. Sorry Dave. You didn't deserve this.

ReplyDeleteAs for the pitiful few left at 1001 Van Ness, a former colleague of mine said it best: "I was happier worrying about how I would pay my next month's rent than I was pulling 6 figures at KRON."
Dave deserves better than this, let's see if Radnich still has any pull to help his colleague or if he will just look out for himself.
ReplyDeleteGary has no pull with the badass three. It's hard to imagine now, Dave, but you're life will be better now. Until they're gone, the horror at KRON will continue. I had a nice salary there, but I'm 100 times happier unemployed. My heart goes out to the many great people that still work there. It is the worst possible work environment you can possibly imagine. I wish these employees my very best.

ReplyDeleteThings just get worse and worse in that dump and it sounds like a terrible place to work. No idea about ratings, but can't be good. Maybe former viewers should get in touch with top brass at the company that owns kron and tell them they won't watch again until these pyschos are gone. Sounds like the people working there are desperate.

It sounds like Guingona got screwed big time. I would suggest calling top employment attorney David Lowe in San Francisco for a consultation. He's a tough litigator. Believe me, if he believes there's a case and chooses to take it the KRON brass will be quaking in their boots.
ReplyDelete...And more KRON embarrassment: Today I saw Kimberly Sakamotto doing the WEATHER. She went from intern to internet reporter to now weather presenter? WTF KRON? While I think this is a grave mistake to put that incompetent novice on the air in the first place, it also goes to show the guy who said asians in the workplace face discrimination is wrong. If Dave was a $ (cheap) asian female he would still be employed.

ReplyDeleteBelieve me, those 3 Bozos should be sued big time. (Sorry, no offense to Bozo.) They are pure evil. As for Pero,Greif, and Baier, they don't care about resumes anymore. Only who they can sleep with and the rest of the employees get f@!ked! I left KRON and my health improved. Talk about a "toxic work environment"! The 3 of them are the laughing stock of the broadcast industry. Word gets around and it is not good. Kudos to the people that are still there. Dave, it will probably turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to you... but hire a good lawyer and sue their asses!
