Maybe they could hire your buddy, the one you have your nose up his ass, Ronn (father of the indicted Laura) Owens. "Ronn says no GoFundMe money has been used on her behalf". Well you blow personal funds on her, and get so cash poor yoyr have to resort to a GoFundMe effort, THEY HAVE BEEN
Rich, it is a wonderful Idea, but a about 10 years too late. I worked for both Mickey and Jack, they are superb broadcasters and programing guys. But even they would tell you it is too late to resurrect KGO/Newstalk even on FM. Jim Gabbert is a guy with a lot of money, but enough sense that is TOO LATE for KGO. I know Jim from his time on KGO. He is a superb business man, and a GREAT Promoter. Cumulus KILLED KGO and KSFO...They are doing a good job on KNBR too. Nothing would make me happier than to see the station come back, but even I don't think that will ever happen. Which is sad. But I love the Idea.
Firstly, thank you for posting my comments re: Brian Murphy even though they clearly are in disagreement with you.
As for a "KGO-like" station being started now... I loved the KGO of old. Listened to it every day. Miss those kinds of shows to this day, and would love to see something like it come back.
But we have to face reality. Gabbert and Luckoff and in their 80's, and those are the execs you cite as being the ones to bring back the format - that's kind of a sign right there. Sure, I agree folks closer to our age range spend money, but regardless of that, they aren't the demographic most advertisers are looking for.
Terrestrial radio as a business is fading, there's no getting around that fact. So for anyone to put money into a new venture in radio, everything needs to be in perfect alignment. We're talking about a format that (sadly IMHO) younger people just don't care about. So sure, maybe you could get 5 years of being barely sustainable. Then what? As more and more of the older folks who are interested in a newstalk format disappear, so does the viability of the station.
So while I love the thought, the idea of a new business based on a dying medium running content geared towards people 55-plus just isn't realistic. I'm just glad I grew up in a time when newstalk was popular and was able to enjoy the legendary KGO.
