*The 4th-tier radio/TV anchor dept. is in full mode this week in the Bay Area as the lengthened holiday week allowed some of the first-tiers to extend their mini-vacation. At KTVU, Julie Haener takes that to the next level. Here's the problem for KTVU: men and now, especially women are TUNING OUT on Haener. They don't care anymore.
*Sal Castaneda is, for the most part, a good guy. He's simply not a good business negotiator.
*Pam Moore's EXIT from KRON was more a sign from Moore knwing her time and place. She understood her worth at the end had deteriorated. She also clearly knew that KRON/Nexstar's offer woul never be as sweet as it would be in another few years.
*I'm sure Haener is making notes about Moore's departure. The Firm certainly hopes so.
*If KPIX (CBS) wanted to dramatically re-arrange the deck chair and get some badly-needed BUZZ in the morning, they offer Castaneda the traffic gig --it's not crazy and it wouldn't cost that much. But PIX and CBS possess about as much creativity as a Lodi Jack-in-the Box.
*The next veteran anchor at KCBS to become a GONER, via retirement or buyout offer: Patti Reising. And nobody will lose sleep.
*The same thing could apply to the future of Amber Lee at KTVU. Just a thought based on pure hunch.
*I could talk about the history of the hamburger and some guy who insists on injecting his CAPITAL LETTER! points about the lousy Democrats. He's become a mass-irritant.
*The morale at Circle7, never great to begin with, is about as serene these days, as a Foster City Shell station.
*Ditto PIX.
If you grew up in the bay area 1940s/1980s you enjoyed great AM/FM Radio and TV. The airwaves now, what a bunch of crap. Sad situation.
ReplyDelete5:09 You're right, for music if you wanted soul KDIA; Rock & Pop} KYA, KFRC, News and Talk } best news KCBS, sadly no longer, talk & News } KGO, no longer, talk KSFO, Sports } KNBR hands down the best but no longer, and sometimes KGO for SF 49ers, Classical and elevator music } KABL, KFOG etc, now radio is a vast wasteland
Delete@7:31 I believe KNEW was country music if my old brain is correct
DeleteRich, gotta give you an Amen on the Adam Copeland remark. ‘Lotta choppin’ but no chips are flying.’ I hear his voice and I change the channel ASAP. He says a whole lot about nothing. No need to waste my time listening to his constant babbling. I hope he gets nixed soon
ReplyDeleteAdam! No one likes you or listens to KNBR when you are on the air. Your sports knowledge is just above Bailey O'Carroll which isn't saying much. When is KNBR giving you your walking papers? Soon we hope.
DeleteHot dog eating isn’t my idea of a sport but ESPN covers the Coney Island hot dog contest. So, to some yokels it is a sport.
ReplyDeleteIt is as ironic and funny as anything in media today! Perhaps to some yokels it is a sport, but to some of us with a sense of humor, it is the most refreshing and hilarious "event" since a Freddy Blassie vs Ray Stevens match at the Channel 2 studios being announced by that famed Pencil Neck, Walt Harris. See you at the Oakland Auditorium for the next Bay Bombers match!
DeleteEating hot dogs is as much a sport as golf is.
DeleteThe endless whining about fog at the coast on KCBS is really a bore. Most of us who choose to live at the coast don't want endless pounding sunshine.
ReplyDeleteIs the Food Network now a sports channel??
ReplyDeleteRich
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying that everyone at KCBS knows the difference, but there is a technical/scientific difference between marine layer and fog.
From Wikipedia: "A marine layer is an air mass that develops over the surface of a large body of water, such as an ocean..., in the presence of a temperature inversion. It is not unusual to hear media weather reporters discuss the marine layer as if it were synonymous with the fog or stratus it may contain, but this is erroneous. In fact, a marine layer can exist with virtually no cloudiness of any kind.... The marine layer is a medium within which clouds may form under the right conditions; it is not the layers of clouds themselves.
I just put that in Wikipedia. Glad you saw it. No scientific basis for what I wrote, though. Fog and marine layer are the same thing. I also wrote in Wikipedia that I'm the 5th Beatle.
Delete9:53 PM: That is correct NOAA has been using marine layer term for ages.

ReplyDeleteYou should see what they put in the meat at a Lodi Jack-in-the Box. *Very* creative.
ReplyDeleteAnd Amber Lee looks like she's asleep in most of her reports.
Hey, Rich ... Lucky for us you hate everything and everybody lest there be nothing to write about everyday. But come to think about it I usually agree with you.
ReplyDeleteCome on Rich! They study online to get their AMS from Mississippi State. Let them use the highly technical term “marine layer”. It will help their self-esteem!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha!!!
DeleteI have seen Sal Castaneda, and while he does as good of a job at traffic as anyone, I don't believe anyone should be paid to do traffic, as much as he is. How hard can it be? He better be thankful for what he IS getting paid, as really, the handwriting is on the wall as to over paid tv personalities...
ReplyDeleteI worked with Sal when he was working union scale doing traffic for Metro. He got the gig at KTVU, because he was popular with the audience and that's why he made the jump to air talent with an agent. I suspect he's perfectly happy with a job that affords him enough money to own his own home and to take care of his family. For some reporter/anchors it's about the money, Sal is a local boy who made good and I suspect is happy to be there as long as they want him.
Delete@3:25 I can't find a single person that has negative things to say about Sal, I know most anyone that had contact with him would tell what a fine person he is
DeleteWhy would anyone want to work in local television? The pay for most is terrible. The image of journalism and the quality of it is horrendous. The work hours are pitiful since it is always open and holidays are a must. And it sounds like most are disfunctional environments. Is it all about the ego and glory of being on TV? Even that doesn't have the shine it once was.
ReplyDeleteTV is one of the last places for local broadcast journalists to work. KGO is gone, KCBS is a joke and KQED never hires anyone full time. Broadcast news is an exciting place to work. Lots of adrenaline, especially around breaking news. Unlike other forms of journalism you do something new everyday and don't generally work on one big story for weeks. For those of us who've done investigative journalism and broadcast journalism, they have their appeal. Neither are what they used to be, but it beats accounting or writing code for some tech company.
DeleteGreat advice to the power players Rich. But I think once you suggest obvious changes they won't happen because no one likes a wise guy.
ReplyDeleteI'll say it now before I forget. Julie H., even though there's been no announcement, congratulations on having had a great career and your retirement. Right now, a few extra few hundred thousand, after taxes, is nice to have. Hopefully, you've saved and invested well and will be able to afford your desired lifestyle (horses, travel, home(s), vehicles, medical, health. As you've already been able to see, retirement can be quite busy in itself without having to deal with the corporate/KTVU job.
ReplyDeleteUgh, every July every sports talk host in America discusses whether hot dog eating is a sport. Just like they all rank Thanksgiving foods every November. It's lazy, boring and predictable.
ReplyDeleteDon’t you just love it when Tolbert says he likes a particular beer? Or when Murph n Mac ponder the variables of Hawaiian food? These idiots should be shillin’ sh/stuff on the food network, as their minds wander in the fog.
DeleteAt least they describe it as a marine layer, unlike SFGate, which periodically tries to convince readers Karl the Fog has always been the way the City refers to fog.
ReplyDeleteBoth Cope's father and son lack any talent. The dad was simply Ronn Owen's suck up buddy
