Peter Schofiled was an ace traffic anchor. I say was because Schofield left KCBS--on his own terms. He was tired of being taken advantage of and routinely passed over for primetime consideration.
Schofield was an eternal #2, a fill-in, but a very good one. So good, AM drive traffic anchor, Kim Wonderley, made it a point that Schofield would fill in for her when she was off. Same too in the afternoon drive with Kim Vestal.
Schofield knew his craft. Knew the Bay Area geography and region well. He not only knew the roads and highways but could pinpoint, say, detours and info listeners loved and looked forward to.
Most importantly, Schofield's on-air anchoring was crisp and fresh. He mixed the most basic traffic minutiae with detailed info and A1 accuracy. Often he'd inject his own dry sense of humor with a special touch making that long, tedious drive through the Bay Bridge maze a lot easier to tolerate.
Schofield coined the term, "brake-tapping." Almost all traffic anchors at KCBS uses it every day.Schofield left two years ago. The traffic/sports operations guy, Don Bastida, at KCBS blew it BIG TIME on Schofield. He could have offered him any number of gigs, including midday but held back.
Schofield, story goes, would have been content with a Saturday AM spot and a promise for a future permanent gig but was never formally offered such. Instead, under Bastida's watch, Schofield was essentially jerked around and toyed with.
The VP/ND, Jenny Seelig, knowing Schofield was an undervalued/under-appreciate air talent but didn't make any move. She could have and should have. But that would require common sense and creativity, something of a foreign concept at KCBS these days.
Schofiled is out of radio, his own choice, to work as a clerk in the Superior Court in San Mateo county. Job security is much better and so are the perks and benefits. The pay isn't bad either.
Schofield's absense from the Bay Area airwaves is a bummer. It could have been avoided had a couple of knuckleheads did the right thing and made the right move but again, that's heavy lifting at KCBS.
And his family used to own 990 KKIS, Pittsburg/Concord.
ReplyDeleteDr. Don Rose's .... station !
DeleteAfter KFRC , then KKIS, for a few years, and then briefly K101
Rose was part of a group that bought KKIS and KDFM from Schofield.
DeleteMeanwhile KRON gave Pam Moore a sendoff and it was more reflective of the state of KRON than Moore's departure. Basically, if it didn't happen in the last 8 years, it was barely mentioned. There's a reason for that. KRON trashed its tape library. So most of Moore's KRON career was not coverable and never mentioned. It's also why we repeatedly saw Steve Aveson in Moore's flashbacks. That's the footage KRON had to work with. It's also why most, if not all, of KRON's decades old footage of Moore looked so terrible...it was literally ripped off from YouTube clips other people had posted years ago (including me). So the Pam Moore goodbye special was as much about Moore leaving as it was about showing how pathetic KRON became after losing NBC affiliation.
ReplyDeleteSo now Moore is essentially gone from KRON. She got a studio named after her (for as long as that studio is around anyways). Meanwhile KRON, in a post-Moore world, appears to be toying with the idea of going to a single anchor newscast format. In the last week Wayne, Heenan, and Lodes have all soloed various primetime newscasts. They opted to do that rather than bring in Waldman so what's that tell you? It would not surprise me at all if KRON remain in a holding pattern until CW affiliation arrives and then it switches to single anchors in a cost cutting move.
@11:50 what happened to their tape library? Did they toss them or did they burn in a fire?
DeleteDoes it really matter? The result is the same. But my money would be all in on "trashed" because maintaining one, especially once KRON moved into KGO's sloppy seconds, would be expensive and not what penny pinching Young Broadcasting or Nexstar would condone...
DeleteYou're absolutely right, Rich. Years ago you can count on KCBS traffic to be super accurate and up to date so you can avoid or take another route; I gave up few years ago when I get stuck in traffic and not getting warnings from present KCBS (Oh, how the mighty has fallen) Now I check WAZE and loving it, very accurate
ReplyDeleteCourt clerk job with pension? KCBS did him a favor. Meanwhile, it seems all their newsreaders stumble over words - except the imports from KGO, who at least can read well.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the guy that did KCBS "In Depth"? This morning they had Holly Quan on.
ReplyDeleteKeith Menconi left a few weeks ago. Now he's doing podcasts for the Chronicle. https://www.sfchronicle.com/about/newsroomnews/article/menconi-joins-sf-chronicle-18166339.php
DeleteJust another example of how Radio has been dying. I still can't believe what happened to KGO Radio. 50,000 watts of clear channel nothing these days.
ReplyDeletei drove to Petaluma and back this morning from the East Bay and listened to KCBS. All they did was repeat the same shit over-and over-and over....etc.
ReplyDeleteBefore smartphones, I appreciated that same shit since I got off work very late and could get a recap of the day and get the sports scores all in about 15 mins. Now, all that info is at your fingertips any minute of the day.
DeleteJust like watching the KRON4 Morning News. It is NOT more news, it news consistently repeated, just in a different order
DeleteHey Rich I have not heard much about Newsnation. I enjoy their network and really Love Natasha Zouave’s who was here on local TV, circle7 I believe
ReplyDelete@4:21 Yes, Beautiful Natasha was @ ABC7 News circa 2015 with irritating Aqui early AM, somehow got lost in the shuffle and wound up with NewsNation (NextStar) owner of KRON 4, Ai Yi Yiiiii
DeleteKCBS dropped the ball not just on Peter, but Mike Tracy, too, a few years back. Both were incredibly capable traffic anchors who could seamlessly fill in for morning and afternoon drives. What a shame to not hear either on KCBS anymore.
ReplyDeleteAs a two-decade former airborne traffic reporter in the market, the job is reading ads under the guise of public info. It's not ground-breaking journalism. There's hardly a vehicle on the road today without on-board real-time traffic info, and local radio listeners (the very few that remain) couldn't care less who reads them the copy off the screen. Program directors only want a tight wrap before listeners tune out. Yes, Peter and Mike Torissi were fine, but no one (except maybe Rich) ever tuned in to marvel at their ability to read accident data from the CHP CAD. Dinosaurs.
ReplyDeleteVery sad to read your updates every other day on KCBS. It certainly makes me glad to see you that there are lots of people who left there who
ReplyDeleteare doing much better today.
I’ve said it before, but I don’t mind repeating myself.
ReplyDeleteKCBS was for many years a very reliable, straight down the middle news station. That made them valuable. They are now not a news operation, but a Democrat mouthpiece. Very biased. That means I can no longer trust what I hear on KCBS. They should apply to the FCC to change their call letters to KDNC.
Beside the loss of so many of their talented people, I can’t figure out what has happened to their audio quality. Some—not all, but many—of the people on the air, especially some of the anchors, sound AWFUL, as if they use microphones from ToysRUs. My phone has better audio quality, and that includes their FM version. And no, it’s not my radio, I have several radios. I tune to a different station and most of them sound fine.
Too bad KCBS isn’t still owned by CBS itself. At least it would sound better.
