Friday Flash: Fox Directive To Phase Out Local Sports Segments on Its O and O News Is Now Nearing; KTVU in Mix

FOX DIRECTIVE: phase out sports on local TV News stations

Fox is de-emphasizing sports on its O and O stations, including KTVU and it's a sooner-rather-than-later business model.

This has been an ongoing situation with The Firm only now, it appears, the proposition to 86 sports reports on its outlets seems to have been put on the front burner. It is odd, given Fox's ownership of the NFL's football games and its gargantuan payout to get rights to World Cup but Fox seems to have a priority for properties and less interest in local sports.

It's NO coincidence it has told some of its high-priced sports anchors, (like Mark Ibanez, here) to take a hike.

KTVU has cut its sports dept. programming over 25% and is using a news reporter, (Jessie Gary) to fill in on sports anchoring. Gary's sports chops leave a lot to be desired and Fox/KTVU seem not to give a damn. Now we know why.

I'VE BEEN TOLD the new directive could become policy as soon as the New Year and that KTVU could essentially push out all sports reports --with the exception of major local sports news --the first of the year. Again, this is no surprise and I've heard as much and have reported as much.

  1. Well, I for one could care less about most sports segments on local news. They're more like a clown show lately.

  2. Well if they cut sports on KTVU they my as well cut the rerun taped shit show sports segment on KCBS.

  3. Maybe, in lieu of sports, they can feature TomTolbert hawking life insurance as a substitute.
That’s about as close to talking about sports as he will ever get. “Like Basketball? Buy some Mutual of Oakland Life Insurance!!”

    1. I was hoping for an infomercial hawking vacations in Alviso.

  4. No more Jesse Gary on sports? I'm devastated.

On a positive note, at least we'll get to see even more stories from KCRA Sacramento, Fox Business and other random Fox affiliates.
(Recently one of their hour long newscasts had only TWO stories from actual KTVU reporters)

    1. Sports anchors are usually more lighthearted and personable simply by the nature of what they cover. Jesse Gary is the complete opposite, intense and zero personality. The decision to make him a sports anchor confuses me until I remembered Rich’s reporting that ktvu recently sent an email to reporters asking for volunteers to do sports. Either no one responded and Jesse was “voluntold,” of all those who expressed interest he was the most desirable, which is a terrifying thought.

  6. Interesting move for FOX to eliminate its Sports Dept.

San Diego was the first to eliminate their sports dept back in 2009 when they lost its FOX affiliation to CW Network, meaning the station no longer could offer any live sporting events. Andrea Nakano who was the weekend sports anchor was shown out the door and luckily for her she’s on KPIX now.

    1. Andrea Nakano did the sports reports on tonight's 6pm & 7pm shows with Julia Goodrich. Both of those women are so excellent, it's always a pleasure to watch their work.

    2. If CBS is next on that end, at least Nakano will get to keep her job as a news anchor only but not Vern Glenn or Charlie Walter

  7. There has been plenty of rumors about FOX selling it's O&O's outright.
Selling those stations without sports departments, would push viewers to other FOX sports outlets via streaming. The new owners of those sold O&O's would most likely NOT rebuild those sports departments...thus eliminating competition for FOX.

  8. Oh, No! When one local leads, the others follow. Vermin Glenn will soon be on the chopping block, too.

  9. guess that puts the kibash on Carmen Kiew's next move in sports reporting

    1. Once she gets the boot from her strange giants gig she'll move on to trying to be an Instagram "influencer" again, which is what she was aspiring to be before her daddy pulled strings and got her the Giants job.

  10. No local sports?

That pretty much puts an end to my ever-dwindling interest in KTVU “news”.

  11. And if that works, Fox will cut news too and then they have just have weather updates all newscast long.

  12. Not surprising. These mega-media companies are all about maximizing profits to keep their shareholders happy. Providing public sevice? Does anyone actually think that FOX or predatory radio companies such as Audacy and Cumulus do that?

  13. There’s no point in watching ktvu news anymore when 90% of the stories they run are from Fox Business, Fox News, KCRA Sacramento or various local fox affiliates. Most of their newscasts have only 2-3 stories from ktvu reporters.
If tv news is your thing and you like what ktvu airs, cut out the middle man and watch those specific channels or go to their website. In the case of the stories they run from local Fox stations across the country, most offer a free livestream on their website, including KCRA.

  14. I couldn't understand why KTVU made us wait till what was it, 10:57? to get 90 seconds of sports report.

    1. "90 seconds of sports report."

Correction: 90 seconds of sports report from Jesse Gary.

  15. KNTV essentially eliminated daily sports reporting. They have an anchor for Saturday and Sunday. I check NBC Sports Bay Area for local reams & CBS Sports other scores.
