  1. Hi Rich, Did you ever inquire to KPIX regarding their AM/Noon weather anchor posting that closed 2 months ago? That one is a senior one and wondering if anyone new will be joining the KPIX Morning & Noon news team next year?

Also what is the update on Yamamoto’s wife? She is yet to be on KPIX

    1. Nobody watches the noon news except me, KR and I doubt someone decent, even a weather anchor is placed there, at least someone other than a routinebody.

Yama's wife is at another station, I forgot, but that might tell you more about her "talent."

    2. Ryan Yamamoto's spouse is Suzanne Phan a reporter now at KGO TV

    3. Good to know she is on KGO but don’t know what times just yet. Wonder if she is better than Yamamoto.

In terms of the weather anchor part, we just don’t know why the posting was there in the first place, and I was wondering what the reason could be since we have Burch, Peck, Heggen (and rarely Hackney & Lee). Is it that they want to add one more meteorologist and stave Peck off the backup weekday morning duties and leave him on the weekends & fill in during weekday evenings?

As I said he seems to be more comfortable during weekends & weekday evenings and not so on the mornings.

  2. Scott from Concord---Any thoughts as to KTVU possibly revamping its newscasts in response to falling ratings? I think installing a good anchor team instead of the "merry go round" anchorship would help. Put Andre Senior as a main cog with ???

On a positive note, I do like Henry Lee's work as investigative reporter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Scott, the problem is at KTVU, there's nothing to "revamp" when you have mediocre talent. Save for Alex Savidge and Cristina Rendon, most of the talent is simply not there.

Senior is just OK, not good enough to build around, hence his move back to morning, where he's average and less noticed.

      Yeah, Henry Lee is good.

  4. Do you have any sense of nostalgia, with regard to the soon-to-be demolished Coliseum in Oakland? All those great Raider and A's memories, legendary games and teams, "Days on the Green" and other concerts, "The House of Thrills" (as Curt Gowdy used to call it). A once great venue, now neglected, that is going out quietly and seemingly unceremoniously.

    ReplyDelete

    1. great teams played at the Coliseum for sure, but it was even in the beginning a dump. i'll channel some Rich here, "it had the appeal of a trashy hooker outside a 7-11 in Hayward"

      Delete
    2. Of course I do because I was in that very stadium for lots of Raiders and A's games --I'll never forget but the A's will be there at least another year and I'm betting if they don't get the Jack London/Howard Terminal stadium, they'll rebuild at the Coliseum site and play ball, so to speak.

      Why?

Because MLB doesn't want to abandon the #6 Bay Area/Oakland TV market. Just my hunch.

      Delete
    3. If they build downtown it's going to be a traffic nightmare every time there's a game. The freeway ramps, side roads, and 880 are better suited to this where it is. I think the do-gooders want the land for low-income housing. Oakland finally ran AB&I Foundry out of town, watch them glom onto that property and other properties along San Leandro Street by the Coliseum and around the Coliseum.

      Delete
    4. I hope your hunch is correct! Thanks for the reply.

  5. Good morning Rich. This is probably more of a rhetorical question but why does ktvu continue to botch the most basic of things? Recent examples include referring to the "Oakland" Raiders multiple times, referring to RSV as "RVS," calling soccer matches "games" and a draw a "tie," linking their on-screen One Warm Coat drive QR code to a broken link for over a week, and referring to NY Yankee Aaron Judge as "Judge Aaron."

How can so many people be incompetent? I don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because incompetence and ineptness is what you get when you're on borrowed time.

KTVU has lost all form of credibility and vigor in the Bay Area. For years now.

      Delete
    2. "Game" and "tie" are generic terms and can be applied to any sport, and so are "match" and "draw" for that matter. Also, soccer is boring AF so no one cares either way.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the response, Rich.

It'd be one thing if it were one sloppy employee, but to have so many incompetents working on different shows and different shifts is mind boggling. But I guess you're right, now it's just part of the culture there and no one has any pride in the product .

Can you imagine if World News Tonight or the Nightly News with Lester Holt operated like this night after night and they were totally fine with it? Typos...mixed-up information...botched names...referring to defunct sports teams...anchors unable to pronounce the names of famous athletes and political figures. Of course you can't.

      Love your blog. Happy Holidays.

  7. Rich, If KCBS is considering having some “talk” programs in the evenings - as you’ve hinted - what about a call-in radio doctor in the spirit of Dr Dean Edell? Somebody who could talk about the whole gamut of people’s health concerns - not just Covid! I’ll bet Im far from the only listener who misses Dr Dean - especially his willingness to question mainstream medical and pharma communities when appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I didn't "hint", I said it was a formality and that it would debut probably at the beginning of the new year...

As for a "Dr. Dean" kind of med show, that's not in the KCBS/Audacy model, their new nighttime talk format will be more of a public affairs type showesque--less opinionated and more informational, just a guess on my part. And it won't just be KCBS, but all Audacy stations.

I ain't watched her lately but if she's been artificially enhanced they likely won't shrink. Since many people lose some weight and stature with age her "best" features may only get accentuated. KNBR’s ratings keep going down down down, for good reason - that’s some abysmal radio. Will there ever be a “changing of the guards” or will they keep the same tired dreck going indefinitely? Their reliance on dumb opinions - “which is better X or Y?” - is simply silly and sad.

  18. Hey Rich, thanks for taking questions. The time switch from daylight to standard took place many weeks ago, but some Bay Area over-the-air broadcast stations continue to provide the time as daylight. Accessed by pressing the "info" button on remote. Maybe this is just a quibble, but makes a person wonder if a station doesn't report the time correctly, do they report their news correctly?

    ReplyDelete

    1. To be honest, I don't think this matter is even in their semi-semi-radar; you have a legitimate beef but in their world, they just have bigger fish to fry.

    2. @1:27, go into your TV's settings, find Time or Clock, and turn off DST. Turn it back on after 3/11 next year. The TV transmitters all have their clocks adjusted by now.

      Delete
    3. re: 6:21, time information for digital over-the-air broadcasts is provided each station, via broadcasted air waves, not from the tv. Some stations are providing the correct standard time, others still provided daylight time. Besides time & date, there is also programming information, current program, next program, etc. This feature is used frequently by over-the-air viewers. If you obtain your tv programming by cable or satellite, this is probably not a feature you are able to access.

  20. Hello Mr Lieberman
    William in Richmond
This is an observation with a question. The Oakland Raiders ( DAVIS Family) pooped on their loyal fans twice. I cannot forgive them. Oakland Fans put the FUN in dysfunctional ! Now they are the Vegas Traitors, and a shell of their former selves. They used to go out cat’tin, drinkin’, running amok before a game and beat the hell out each other in practice. These Wild Men took no prisoners and laughed and puked on their opponents. Now they are perennial doormats, and dare I say “pansies”?! They went full Vegas, all show, no game.
Where do you stand on the current state of da raydas?

  24. Good question, Bruce and I'll try to be to the point because get that question a lot, not just here but other places.

If the questions are interesting and real and are media-centric, then of course, I'll publish them even if I disagree or the questioner disagrees with me.

If there's a question that is obviously from a troll or is abusive and threatening, no I'll delete them.

My feeling, and this isn't outrageous, if you throw stones you should have the guts to identify yourself, like I do everyday when I'm critical and I quite obviously am. But I don't hide behind the keyboard and rip anonymously, like some others do.

There are questions that I get that get repetitive and go gung-ho political and often end up drawing political trolls and I'm not into that type of discourse so they too don't get published.

    1. Appreciate the response.

It's your site and it's your right to establish whatever tone you see fit and curate the comments that aligns with the subject matter you write about. If someone wants to espouse political beliefs or threats or trolling behavior there are an infinite number of sites designed for those very things.
And you make a good point about you putting your name behind everything you publish, while the majority of us choose to be anonymous. It's easy to be a keyboard warrior, talk shit and take cheap shots at strangers when you think there are no repercussions.
Your blog would go off the rails really fast if it became a free for all.

Many years ago I asked Thom O’Hair of KSAN fame about radio’s future. He told me “Radio is dead, TV is where it’s happening.” I believe he was right, but I think TV is dead now, too. 27. Not a question but an observation.

Evidently you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Julie Haener has officially resumed her erratic and selfish schedule thing. She’s missed the work the past three days, just in time for the holidays when her co-workers with young children would probably rather be at home with their kids than at work filling in for Haener as she flaunts her wealth on social media.

  29. Here's a general question. Why isn't there much news or talk radio on FM in the San Jose area and also in Reno NV area (if that's even true). I'm aware of the 106.9FM & 740AM simulcast (with some delay by the time FM airs after AM. I actually never listen to 88.5FM and don't know what's airing on KQED-FM. Anyone else, please comment if RL is ok with that.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Another bothersome thought. I did get a glimpse of Sara Donchey (KPIX) finally. Both times, she was wearing pants I personally didn't like. I can now also say, as others have commented, I don't like her clothing tastes. One pair was black with white accents, perhaps stitching, to mimic Levi-jeans; the other pair were a tan-colored large plaid material. The more bothering thought is the KPIX webpage said she works 3pm and 5pm, but both times she was only on a 11pm (I don't remember which days, now). Then she wasn't on at 11pm after those 2 days I happened to finally see her. WTH! Is she another anchor with a Julie Haener (KTVU) schedule of work just..."whenever"? Otherwise, she generally looks and speaks well. I noticed KPIX has much of the news personalities standing vs merely sitting behind a table/desk.

Unrelated, but another generality is: I'm glad the am/daytime news business income must be good/ok, as when I try to tune in, every channel is playing an advertisement/commercial, seemingly for several minutes. I wonder what is the ratio of commercials to the actual news broadcast (is it 50/50)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Those commercials are largely small local business and the rates for 30 seconds are a fraction of what they were pre-internet. Don't confuse quantity with quality.

Sara's usual spot is 11 pm. For a while they were moving her around—"breaking her in" I think. They had Reed Cowan doing the 11 for a bit. Now the Donkey is there permanently.

Those "Levis" pants were leather jeans with some white stitching. Hideous. I think they made her look like a goucho. And I speak as someone who loves a woman in leather pants!

  32. Hey Rich- just wanted to commend you for calling out all of the frauds and posers in our local media. ReplyDelete
  33. Cumulus ain’t going nowhere. They destroyed KGO Radio, firing all of the on-air staff over a period of several years, replacing the local programming with a sleazy series of sports betting shows, which is not surprising. Rich, you should do an in depth story on how companies such as Cumulus have ruined a once-respectable radio business. If people knew all of the BS that went on behind the scenes, they’d probably be shocked. I know first hand because I worked at KGO for more than a few years. All of my co workers were taken into s room, given a cardboard box and then told by a Cumulus Henchman that they had 5 minutes to pack up their belongings. They were then frog marched out of the KGO building by a couple of underpaid security guards and thrown out onto the street like yesterday’s garbage.
