With some decent work in between.
The Texas school shooting, disturbing and unsettlinmg, was difficult to cover too. The initial reports were bad enough: a gunman had entered a middle school and began shooting.
But in the world we live in, tragically, nothing out of the ordinary other than another alert. Only later on did we learn the casualty number would be so high. Only a week or so after the Buffalo shooting, could it be happening again.
I tuned to KQED and KGO Radio. Eventually switched over to CNN and flipped over the various cable channels --the usual early images and local video was nothing out of the usual story line.
A shooter entered the school and began firing at will. A lockdown in place occured. We still didn't know much information but then things changed drmatically when casualty figures were announced. Then social media went beserk with Twitter saying there were mass victims and the death toll, mainly little kids, was over ten and that several more victims were in the hospital.
On KGO, Pat Thurston and news anchor, Kim McCallister, shocked at the carnage, began sobbing and crying. At first, I thought it was a little over the top but then I sudenly realized both Thurston and McCallister are mothers with young kids. It hit them hard. So it made sense.KGO offered their own updates but when the story got bigger and the death count was larger, KGO switched to the ABC News radio coverage and reporter/anchor, Alex Stone.
KCBS also relied on its CBS News radio network coverage. I wasn't thrilled the traffic/weather updtes were still being updated but I'm also hip to the fact this story, tragic as it was, was outside the Bay Area and that influenced both the length and placement of sub stories in particular.
On TV here, most of the outlets stuck with network accounts, KRON was the first to get interviews on the street and also scored a reaction from Congressman Eric Swalwell.
KTVU, KGO, KPIX and NBC Bay Area led their 5 and 6PM newscasts with the Texas school shooting. (Obviously)
There were no local reports that were out of the ordinary but that's to be expected. The usual MOS interviews were employed and that's basic standard fare for these types of stories, serious and depressing as they are.
I wish the local stations--TV and radio--had a better game plan. I know covering all this is difficult and requires extra chops but given their frequency, (lately) you would think that would be something that was planned and ready to broadcast.
I'm not just talking about reaction from politicians and MOS interviews. What about analysis from experts on crisis? Therapists and mental health doctors. Crime experts in studio. It should be a requirement.
The Warriors Steve Kerr pre-game presser was powerful, provocative and demonstrably vivid. Kerr's anger was real and genuine. Theidea of playing a basketball game was ridiculous and Kerr brought that out.
The sports stations in town--KNBR and 95.7 FM, "The Game" could have discussed all this after and even this morning. But the local toy dept. gave scant attention to it and barely acknowledged it. They have no depth. They both live in a fish bowl. They will try to improvise today but they will most likely fail miserably.
And yes, I heard Tom Tolbert talk about it all but I wasn't satisfied. Call me cynical. The "emotional" crying was not sincere in my book.
If the Warriors won on Tuesday no one will talk about it taken over by the Texas shooting.
ReplyDeleteKerr is a woke clown who should STFU about anything not basketball related.
ReplyDeleteSteve Kerr is way more then a basketball coach, and since his Father was assinated/murdered in a political role, he has every right along with the rest of us. Your the only one that sounded like a clown, Mr. Anomie. Don't think you're a women because they are way to smart and compasionate then someone like you that is a sandwich short of a picnic.
DeleteOh no, you can't tolerate an opposing view? Shut em up!
DeleteSo 10:07.. He has the same speech rights as anyone. Don't like it, don't listen.
DeleteSteve Kerr does have every right to state his opinion and say what he wants thats called freedom of speech, but there is a time and place for everything. Stating your PERSONAL OPINION should be made on your time not the NBA playoffs regardless of your own personal shit .
DeleteKerrs dad wasn't in politics He was a professor get your facts straight
DeleteThis was a terrible tragedy, that happened in Texas where the game was being played, Steve Kerr was eloquent and passionate. I'm not a sports fan, so I'm glad his comments got repeated so I got to hear them. 19 children and 2 adults are brutally gunned down, and some you are offended that a public official has a heartfelt reaction and speaks his mind, and 6:49 you call it personal "shit". What kind of compassion do you have? I shudder to think about it.
Delete10:07 why don't you STFU, seems like you have no heart or understanding of what happened. Do a little soul searching and perhaps you can come up with a comment that makes you sound human.
DeleteYou MAGAs love using the word woke.
Delete11:00 Last time I check Steve Kerr is a basketball coach not a public official. Like I said before there is a time and place for everything. A sporting event is not a place for public forum.
Delete@5:17 PM
DeleteYet, the Mavs announcer and nearly all of the Dallas crowd in attendance that night, aligned themselves with Kerr's stance, not yours.
I totally agree with 10:07. In my opinion Kerr is the "white" LeBron James.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being both racist and stupid.
DeleteI turned on CNN/FOX/MSNBC as soon as I heard about it, as per usual they had their talking heads on, it took them awhile to get with the program.
ReplyDeleteJust another hate crime perpetrated by a Hispanic Supremacist
ReplyDeleteYou have una problema..Nearly all the victims killed were Hispanic.
Delete"KTVU, KGO, KPIX and NBC Bay Area led their 5 and 6PM newscasts with the Texas school shooting. (Obviously)"
ReplyDeleteThe Chronicle will have it on page 9 in two weeks.
Reading the responses to this (as well as elsewhere) is depressing. We can't even agree as a nation that perhaps frequent mass murders of school children is unacceptable and an issue that maybe we should do something about. Even just suggesting tightening up the process of purchasing a guy to allow for better background checks generates the tired "oh you're so woke" nonsense. Or the lame reference to race to make this political. I don't care what race the shooter is, mass murder of children should be of concern to everyone. Is better screening in the purchase process the whole answer? Of course not. But it's SOMETHING that most people, including most gun owners, agree on and is at least better than doing NOTHING and continuing to watch the carnage followed by empty "thoughts and prayers".
ReplyDeleteWell said Greg.
DeleteI've pretty much given up on half of our society. Wash, rinse, repeat. Money and power are more important to them than some school children. Thoughts and prayers? My ass. Just keep those checks from the NRA coming and it's all good. Wonder how they would feel if it were their kids?
I was waiting for this response from some liberal turd like Neal. I knew someone would throw in Kerr's past. Just like you Neal, Steve Kerr is a whiny liberal, pontificating his opinion and aiming his ire directly at conservatives. His job is to coach. That's it! Get off your Goddamn soapbox, do your job and STFU! Law abiding citizen and gun owner, you want to " attempt" to repeal the 2A and disarm the nation? Well, good luck with that! Trust me. It won't end well for those that try.
ReplyDeleteDeploring the wholesale slaughter of school children is hardly a matter of “opinion.” No one is repealing the 2nd Amendment. And your threat to those taking away your precious guns is childish and pathetic.
DeleteFirst off Einstein, I would not consider myself a liberal as I believe in the death penalty and for that matter against abortion but would never block a women for having one, none of my business and not going to preach like a Holy Roller in front of Planned Parenthood, secondly get some help, you don't need to be Dr. Phil that you are a unhappy angry idiot that probably blames others on your unhappy lonely pathletic life. Yes I would never vote Republican because they just care about power and $$ and not the lives of innocent children or even Americians for that matter. I don't give a poop if every Americian had a gun but not the ones that slaugher American lives in seconds.
DeleteNeal, your hero Steve Kerr is a hypocrite. What about the June 2020 rally he attended in Oakland to have police officers barred from acting as security personnel in the Oakland Unified School District? He said to "not rely on politicians and that the solutions should come from the community". Oops! Politicizing a tragic event makes anyone a scumbag. Hopefully this will be Kerr's last year here. Not surprising Jordan kicked his ass. I am quite happy thank you very much! Obsessed with $$ and power? That would be the current fake administration
DeleteNot my hero, he gets way to much exposure and I have criticized him plenty on Warrior blogs on his coaching and substituting players. Just because you vote one way , does not mean that you have to agree on every topic, for example you're a Trumper, do you agree with everything he says and continue to drink the Orange Kool Aid and agree with all of his lies?
DeleteI went to my Roku, and clicked on CBSN which is a totally FREE Roku channel that is very much like CNN USED to be. So they were providing walltowall coverage down in Texas, and it was actually really good. Regarding Steve Kerr's comments, while I can understand his feelings since his father was killed by gunfire, still though, as someone else here said, I think he is just playing the "WOKE or Cancel Culture" mental game by saying what was expected of him to say. Nobody talks about what would happen if REAL gun control was to happen, to the extent that the WOKE culture wants it to, which is basically eliminating all guns. The problem is that the local gangbangers in Oakland are not exactly going to be marching down the street to the Oakland Police Department, to turn in their guns, if real gun control takes place. And when they go back to funding the police, letting them use rubber bullets, tear gas, and actually use standard police tactics to subdue these gangbangers, then and only then, will I think that some kind of gun control could be in order, other than the normal background checks, etc. Right now though, the best option for regular Americans, to protect themselves from these gangbangers, is to get a dang gun and blow their heads off, after which, it will then and ONLY THEN, be the time to ask questions!
ReplyDeleteHis father was killed by terrorists
DeleteEveryone can have an opinion...but given the amount of security that "stars,"sports etc have it is a bit of a double standard for them to talk about limiting the gun rights of others. And in general the rights of the less privileged....I see my second amendment rights as a key to my security and will fight legally to keep those rights. As someone once said " if you trust the government you should have a conversation with native American s"
ReplyDeleteSorry 1:09, there is no double standard for individuals who employ security services to criticize the senseless slaughter of school children by nutjobs armed with AR-15s. The second amendment doesn’t mean unlimited access to weapons of war for everyone.
DeleteIt amazes me how some people love their guns so much that they completely skip past and attack the suggestion for better screening of people purchasing a gun and go right to "you ain't taking my gun away / don't you dare try to repeal the 2nd Amendment". I don't think there is any realistic attempt being made to do that. Do you have any actual argument against at least some better screening? Saying that's not going to prevent many of these incidents isn't an argument against it. It would still prevent some cases, and what is the harm? How does it not make sense to do that and save a least SOME lives?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with all you’ve said, Rich.
ReplyDeleteOn an unrelated note, recently, I’ve noticed that Ryan Yamamoto has been putting on a totally fake persona, trying his best to pretend he’s Mr. Big Bad Anchorman. He’s even sticking his chin out more than usual and pretending to be all butt hurt and sensitive when they run a sad story. All in the hopes we’ll take him seriously.
I dont think Thurston has young kids, she said all her kids are in college I believe..Rothmanns problem again is him taking himself too seriously and his over inflated ego getting in the way
ReplyDeleteOnce a mother always a mother. Yes, Pat's children are in college, first year, but that does not mean she cannot identify with what the parents in Texas are going through. My daughter is in 40, but my granddaughter is 6, I certainly can feel the pain and anxiety of all this gun violence.
DeleteI think you missed the point. Of course, mothers will typically always love their children and be personally affected at such a horrible massacre of other mothers' children. The post, however, stated that both women had young children. That was incorrect.
Delete10:14, You have a point, I apologize.
Delete95.7 The Game did talk about the Uvalde shootings today. Coach Kerr's raw emotions stem from his beliefs and perhaps that his father was assassinated by a gunman in Lebanon.
ReplyDeleteWhy shouldn't they play the game? To use the murders as a reason to not play is pathetic.
ReplyDeleteUntil people want to talk abnout mental health it's all just virtue signaling
Oh good, I had "virtue signaling" on my MAGA Bingo card. Sure, let's talk about mental health. I agree with that. That is a factor in many of these awful shootings. But let's not do that to the exclusion of also talking about what can be done to make it at least more difficult for people with mental health issues from getting their hands on an AR-15. We need to look at all angles to try to do something about this, not put blinders on and focus on only 1 contributing factor.
DeleteWhile Kerr deserves sympathy for the loss of his father, he has NO SYMPATHY for the deaths and brutality in China with which the NBA are co-conspirators…. We ought to listen to Kerr after he publicly condemns China for the Uighur re-education camps!!!
ReplyDelete@2:11 AM
DeleteBut wha...wha...what about THIS?!?
That's essentially your post.
And with histrionics to boot.
I believe those on the right leaning side of things forgets that rights do have responsibilities. And no one is talking about taking away guns. I’m a gun owner, myself and many others I have spoken to all agree there should be stricter regulations. Teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to buy automatic rifles. The last president actually rolled back gun regulations to allow people with mental disabilities to purchase guns easily.
ReplyDeleteSorry. You are not a gun owner. NO ONE can buy an “automatic” (or machine gun) without a very specialized permit. If you owned a gun you’d know that. Please learn the meaning of “semi-automatic.” But I might agree with you that teenagers ought not own a gun, since our society has devolved into a loss of morality.
DeleteI believe Tolbert and Kerr were team mates at Arizona when Kerr's father was killed by terrorists in Lebanon.
ReplyDeletelund is on and he immediately is on his yuh huh stuff , you tune in later and the first thing you hear is uh huhhh then you just forget about it ,virtually forever.it's going to be that happy puppy lightweight voice tone -show some assertiveness, not some agreeable toss off commentary.
