Never mind the fact that its ratings are still in thr toilet; put aside a new GM, Scott Warren, that isn't (according to my contacts) going to make any big moves because he doesn't have (apparently) the stones; dismiss, if you care to, the new ND, Lisa White, for getting the gig and maintaining her status quo of "power chick"--not my words, but key forces in the newsroom; welcome to PIX, 2022.
Management had a powwow the other day. They bought lunch and spent a good hour patting themselves on the back. Was there any soul-searching? Did Mr. Warren discuss the gross news product? Did he engage White as to the new playbook and how he (and presumably, White) would lift PIX into a new dynamic and expect results? No to all of the above.
Scott Warren loves to look at himself in the miror. Literally and figuratively. There's a joke there, don't get me started. Maybe he's trying to inner channel Allen Martin and Ryan Yamamoto. Who the hell knows but I do know this.KPIX can't draw flies now. Their news personnel has all the appeal of a Berkeley Ramada Inn. The new anchors have NO CLUE. Image enhancement won't work because viewers don't care. They don't care because they have this gross assortment of anchors and reporters who are lifeless and baseless. How can you move the needle with such a tuchus face like Yamamoto? You can't and you never will. He's a flat out DUD. Can I be more blunt? DUD. There.
And Sara Donchey and Amanda Starrantino are DUDS too. And the fighter pilot woman weather czar in the morning, god bless her service to the country and all but apparently, PIX forgot to check her on-air work, good job, Scotty. Maybe you should now go hire a marine to sit next to Martin. That'll make waves.
Keep in mind, folks, these people are paid LOTS OF MONEY to produce NOTHING! What an assorted MESS!
*KRON could be without some of its biggest, most popular news anchors. Rumors persist that Pam Moore is close to retiring and Catherine Heenan might be looking to split out the door. It's not extreme dire straits and KRONvicts are not depressed but KRON, the improved KRON, has to take a hit if these rumors have any legs.
*Some of you don't understand basic common sense, including KPIX and their band of misfits: Betty Yu has STAR POWER. She lights up the screen with MASSIVE PRESENCE. And she's smart too. I undetstand this, a dead canary would understand it too but PIX doesn't. Yu, again for the 500th time, is WASTED and under-utilized. She is instant viewer appeal and one damn great personality yet PIX can't seem to digest it. Perhaps if she were a fighter pilot, but never mind.
*If Circle7 wants to KEEP Dan Ashley, try these numbers: 5 and 7. As in five years and $3.5M--just a number I heard but what the hell, I've been wrong before.Ashley doesn't want to leave the Bay Area; he's got the good life at KGO and a nice spread in Walnut Creek to boot. They don't pay the great money in TV News these days, granted, but Ashley is a vital cog to the mouse brigade at 900 Front. He's the glue that sticks Mickey and the boys and girls together. Pay him, Disney. And keep in mind, he's able to keep Trixie in check and that's HUGE in that newsroom.
Remember, Ashley is not only KGO's (ABC7) most prominent anchor and personality, he's the de-facto face of Channel 7. It's not uber-paramount but these guys don't grow on trees. They evolve and become a part of the family, not only at KGO but outside the studio. It's not as big a deal as it used to be because viewership is down (everywhere) but it's still big enough. Ashley has a great deal of respect among the troops at KGO and his image as a good guy is/has been intact. He has considerable leverage but hasn't used it as a negotiating ploy, if at all. In fact, he's done the opposite. He's not gonna rock the boat because that's not his MO; that said, Disney shouldn't mess with him and get a DEAL DONE as quickly as possible, just a guess on my part.
*Ashley's co-anchor, Ama Daetz, needs to lighten up a bit. She is most admired for her ability to anchor and ask good questions on split screens but Daetz's ego has become the talk at Circle7. She isn't as friendly as she's been in the past, probably an indication that she too, Mickey, wants to get paid. They all do.ADD KGO: Years ago when she was anchoring KGO news and had a significant presence in the SF arts and social community, Carolyn Tyler, was nice, cool, funny and quite the luminary figure to be around and have lunch with. Tyler still enjoys those caveats but her rep as a person who likes it known her off-camera buds can be issues if you don't play the game, is quite the deal
*Is it just me or does Giants' PA announcer, Renel Brooks-Moon, look different?
*Frank Somerville, in his mind, sees a comeback. He envisions maybe in a year or two, a chance at redemption, maybe in, say, Sacramento. It's not as far-fetched as you would think but far-fetched enough. Somerville has a big problem (among many) though and it's called The Internet, where past videos and misdeeds are forever seen and can be seen.I could see Frank, sober, lucid, and rid of certain demons, landing a gig in a small market where redemption might play, along with third chances and indirect ratings. Like I said, Sacramento, which for Somerville might as well be Paris.
*That Jessie Gary sports report the other night on KTVU was quite a riot and not entirely awful just borderline lousy and terrible which is just fine at The Firm these days.*Keep in mind the reason why Joe Fonzi got the fulltime anchor gig at KTVU was because Joe has family dough and doesn't need the money. He'll work for beans and that's pretty much what they're paying him. But good for Joe and indirectly, Jessie Gary, who can be crummy again and again when Joe has the night off.
*Yeah, I have an appreciation for the good old days when real talent was to be seen and heard. The good old days when you didn't see a reporter from Fresno thrown onto the screen and misprounounce street names and actually know the city and region they were reporting from, what an ancient concept. I remember the good old days when TV News anchors looked the part and weren't auditioing to become spokespersons for the Golden Gate Bridge. I remember the good old days when you didn't have 5000 fill-in radio news anchors and goofy overnight tonsils who insisted on giggling when they read their copy and play the wrong sounders and yeah, the good old days.
*Even the congenial John Rothmann has tried to distance himself from the doofus/bore producer, John Daly, KGO Radio's house snitch and inherent want to stir shit up and try to forge a theory that he's important and a force to be dealt with--at KGO that's easy and not such a big deal. Nobody cares really or gives a shit about albatross KGO, in fact, and Daly's activity as an eavesdropper on everyone's cell phone is no big deal because in addition to being a snitch, Daly is an abject asshole --even Rothmann and his bullshit Richard Nixon/Dwight D Eisenhour friends can't stand doofus Daly.*Daly is the "executive producer of the 'Mark Thompson Show' on KGO", which is basically like downloading as many YouTube actualities as you can, yeah, great, Mr. Daly, now it's time for your fan boys to send me love letters.
*Around KGO Radio these days, people asking each other: "can you speak Spanish?"
*Lee Hammer, the KGO PD, was in a real good mood the other day, he went to Subway and bought 12 bags of chips for the crew.
*To which Cumulus told Hammer, "you spent what?!!"
*Newest KCBS morning anchor, ET, wanted to ingratiate himself with staff, he bought after-shift cocktails for Alisa Clancy and Lisa Chan. There was a problem, Chan wantec to order room temperature sparking soda --and Clancy was set for a Shirley Temple, (ha, ha, ha)*I was lucky enough, years ago, to meet Jim Dunbar, Russ Coughlin, Ted Wygant, Ron Denman, --yeah, real legacy KGO Radio folks who cared about the call letters and actually were dedicated craftsmen. They were PROS! Not posers and silly little actors like the yahoos that are part of KGO today and pretend to be big shots. Yeah, KGO not that long ago was an important part of the community and today, about as invigorating as a Lodi whore house.
*Those pre and post game shows are essentially propaganda programs for the local teams, which is why I pay no attention to them --as far as Laura Britt, she's OK, certainly more cogent to watch than the usual dreck they trot out at NBC Sports Bay Area.
*I'd rather look and watch Britt as opposed to the assorted schlums like Carlos Ramirez, where did this schmuck come from? Never mind.
How much coffee did you have this morning before you started writing?
ReplyDeleteWillard and Dibs are shit.
ReplyDeleteIs this Mrs Willard?
DeleteYou just revealed that your KPIX source was at that luncheon.
ReplyDeleteApparently everyone but Rich Lieberman is an incompetent imbecile…
DeleteAma Daetz is black. That's why she is there. She does a competent job as coanchor, but if she thinks even for a minute, that she deserves anything close to what Ashley is or will be getting paid, she would be crazy. And yet, she will probably get a raise because of once again, the cancel culture will speak up and say that she is paid less because she is a lowly woman and black, but it honestly has nothing to do with that. She is just not nearly as good as Ashley, and also, if you think about it, you never see Ama Daetz anywhere or at any other times, other than coanchoring the news. She never does anything else, such as reporting, special events, etc. She does nothing for me.
ReplyDelete"Ama Daetz is black. That's why she is there. She does a competent job as coanchor, but if she thinks even for a minute, that she deserves anything close to what Ashley is or will be getting paid, she would be crazy."
DeleteThank you! For all of Rich's slobbering, all I see is another news-reading robot.
@12:28- Ama Daetz is cool, but I do admit she was better when she was coming up and working on weekends. It seemed like her personality showed more back then, but I'm not sure if part of that was she was working hard to get the regular weeknight spot.
DeleteNot sure if it's a different deal working every night as opposed to that weekends, but she has changed since coming up.
Bret Burkhart's last day at KGO is tomorrow.....you must be thrilled!
ReplyDeleteI'll miss the "Wow!"s.
DeletePrepare for KCB-WOW!
DeleteAt KPIX does not one actually look at any tape on these new hire anchors? You can go to You Tube and see Donchey nothing special, in So Cal Yamamoto Sleeping in Seattle, Starrantino struggled reading the prompter in Indy, and the Lt was in Redding and must have been shocked when she actually got the job. The young reporters I guess you have to take whoever is willing to live here for what they are paying but the Anchors, I would think the pool would be deeper.
ReplyDeleteBastida is sitting at home laughing about his replacements. Promote Betty Yu to Lt Colonel and see what she can do.
Here's Starantino at her last gig somewhere on the California coast. She sounds like a college student anchor new broadcast to the dorms.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxfDpE_jQoM
She did weather also. Does this mean she gets a military rank?
DeleteThe on-air Thomson/Daly interactions seem a tad strained as well.
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that Faux outrage is Mark’s shtick? They just play along with it.
DeleteBetty Yu and Jocelyn Moran are AWESOME at the PIX.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with this assessment. Jocelyn Moran, with her big eyes, just DOES IT for me in the mornings, and lately, they seem to have had her put on a little more makeup, which only accentuates her profound beauty. She is definitely a hottie! And of course, Betty Yu, with her duck lips, well she just exudes sensuality, although I still think her feet are too big...
Delete"Somerville has a big problem (among many) though and it's called The Internet, where past videos and misdeeds are forever seen and can be seen."
ReplyDeleteMaybe not. Jennifer Jolly finally got her "pie" video off of YouTube.
Oh please elaborate I know not of this!
Delete"*Newest KCBS morning anchor, ET, wanted to ingratiate himself with staff, he bought after-shift cocktails for Alisa Clancy and Lisa Chan. There was a problem, Chan wantec to order room temperature sparking soda --and Clancy was set for a Shirley Temple, (ha, ha, ha)"
ReplyDeleteSome of your jokes fly over my head, Rich.
NEWS FLASH: No one at KGO likes John Rothmann, including management and his producer. It’s so difficult to imagine why.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Giants pre and postgame show, I think it's not bad. Yeah, Laura Britt had big shoes to fill with Greg Papa off the Giants pre and postgame show for this year, but so far she has transitioned nicely from Niners pre and postgame to Giants pre and postgame.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants have a solid group of analysts with Randy Winn, Rich Aurilia, Shawn Estes, George Kontos.... Regarding Carlos Ramirez, he's been on NBC Sports Bay Area since last year and I think he does some work with the Niners? Overall he's ok.
The Warriors pre and post game shows are awful. Bonta needs to find out where Shaq gets his suits made; he always looks like he's going to burst. Mullin was a great Warrior, but he has a voice perfect for silent movies.
ReplyDeleteyour opinion of betty yu is WAY over the top. Her reading a teleprompter vey meh
ReplyDeletenever fails, when Tolbert gets going on another long puppy dog story ,all Copeland can do is lapse into a bunch of ''yea yea'' s which shows he's already bored with the story. stuck in toms wheelhouse of soporific stories.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch CBS often but agree with Rich! Betty Yu is one of the few bright spots at PIX. Andrea Nakano also does a nice job. I appreciate that Betty seems to value working out over pizza and donut consumption which is an added plus in my book!
ReplyDeleteFrank Somerville should look further North than Sacramento. Chico/Redding may be a good fit. Chico is a party town, he'll fit right in.
ReplyDeleteThat area even brought the Bay Area a Lieutenant to do weather!!
