Thrilling 49ers Win over Packers Gets Zero Post Game Coverage on KTVU; Subtle Sign Ibanez is Being Phased Out

THE 49ers WIN over Green Bay last night--a FOX game broadcast on KTVU--was exciting and thoroughly unpredictable. Combined with the frigid cold of Lambeau Field and snow falling as the winning field-goal kick took place, it was a magical Saturday night both here and at the frozen tundra.

Too bad KTVU didn't bother to have a post game show on last night and instead, just broadcast a regular newscast. Talk about real genius programming with a wink.

The entire KTVU sports staff--including Mark Ibanez and Joe Fonzi---were reportedly steamed over the omission. (Fonzi was at the game but there was still no PG coverage)

This wasn't about sending a crew to Green Bay, mind you, --this is a post-game show at KTVU's studios and interviews and live coverage. Hell, KTVU is a Fox O and O and therefore, the decision is even more embarrassing.

In addition to being all out cheap, there appears to be a more onerous message here and it's completely transparent:

KTVU--Fox2 is phasing out veteran sports anchor, Mark Ibanez. Sources close to Ibanez told me that in so many words. And since Ibanez has done numerous Niners' PG shows and was willing to come into the studio even on a Saturday night, this is further evidence of how KTVU brass thinks of sports and its 49ers playoff coverage. And its game plan moving forward with Ibanez' future.

  1. I prefer the 49ers pre- and post-game show on NBC Sports Bay Area, which devotes time and resources to product. The Ibanez show ("press play and go") has been a snore for years, much as I like Joe Fonzi. Another show destroyed by Fox.

    1. I agree about NBC Sports Bay Area. Not crazy about Ibanez being teamed with the likes of Bubba Paris. I did see a little of Joe Fonzi with snow on his shoulders after the game. I'm DVR'ing Game Night (with Dennis O'Donnell?) as today's games were also wild.

  2. KTVU is turning into KGO Radio.

  3. That's not nearly as embarrassing as watching KTVU shill for its morning show during halftime. Oh...my...God...I didn't think it was possible for anyone to out-Darya Darya Folsom but Gasia did it yesterday.

  4. Leave it to Rich Lieberman to find things to whine about the 49ers thrilling victory.

We don't come here for sports coverage. Read the audience.

    2. Rich all of a sudden is concerned about the 49ers after being a Raider guy his whole life. Go figure.

  5. Did anyone see Joe Fonzi outraged (post game coverage) when it sounded to him that they were going to Walnut Creek live shot before him. Good thing his mic was off...

    1. Yeah, Walnut Creek, the home of the 49ers fans!!! Keep Joe in the snow while showing a taped story!!!! Sum ting Wong!!!!

    2. Yes, that was hilarious. And then one of the other guys in the studio tried to pass it off as "oh Joe is still so excited about the 49ers victory" lol

  6. The Fonzi thing was hilarious. Obviously he didn't want to stand outside in the freezing cold any longer than necessary and was having a fit until somebody said in his IFB that he was on.

The newscast after the game seemed to be an attempt to combine a news show with a post-game show, though it wasn't much of either. The live shot in Walnut Creek was worthless -- what do you expect fans to say? And the discussion of the game was more or less a highlight reel of what people had seen a half-hour earlier.

The big picture is that Fox/News Corp. has been buying O&Os in NFC markets because they want to have more of a presence in NFL markets where Fox shows the games of the local team. That's why Fox acquired KTVU from Cox in 2014. So you'd think that local management would understand the goal and do more to cash in on their NFL ties. I imagine the Fox/News Corp. suits in NY think their SF managers are incompetent if they can't deliver on something as easy as this.

  7. I don't believe it's phasing out Ibanez. Because if that was the case, wouldn't they still have a show but have someone else host it? No, this is a case of and hate to sound sexist, females who are top 3 management and have zero knowledge of what a sports segment should look like Pre Game, During and Post Game. Why else would you go to News after a local sporting event? And it didn't appear to even be a priority of going to Joe. It was HERE'S THE NEWS SINCE YOU'RE WATCHING and what is really happening is everyone is tuning to ESPN or NFL Network for all post game material.

  8. Eh, I'd rather watch ESPN's total NFL recap. Their hosts are a lot better...and the shows have way more resources.

  9. Local sports coverage is woefully mediocre and lacking in insight. If you want to learn about what happened in a big game, go to ESPN or the national press or NFL Network. You aren't getting anything remotely from this market. They lack access to the powers that be, who invariably bypass the local guys and leak news to the national press.

  10. does anyone know why on the comcast nbc 49er show they are to cheap buy them a desk? it looks awkward with them standing the whole time with the cheap set their on.. and they never show the video highlights from the game, its still photos which is also bizare..and they keep changing the stuiod analysts every season, comcasts coverage of all the teams is bad

    1. This whole concept of the presenters standing is silly. It's happened in news broadcasts as well. To me it's distracting. Consultants in the media biz must have decided this is how you keep it "fresh".

  11. If Ibanez took a 50% pay-cut they could work it out.

  12. KTVU News is horrible. Fox destroys everything. How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways.
