As a kid in the seventies I have fond memories of watching the Raiders with my dad...he loved Coach Madden and I hope they get to bump in to each other in that great stadium in the sky. RIP
Sad. Tremendous coach and broadcaster. When you listened to Madden on TV, it always felt like it was a big game. He had that effect. No one these days can come close. He will be missed by many football fans and his legacy will live on for decades to come with the Madden NFL video game. Rest in Peace Coach Madden. You were one of a kind.
Yes, crying. Watch the video of Madden, eulogizing his friend Pat Summerall. Madden was an emoter, and I doubt that he would have had a derogatory attitude toward those who express real heartfelt emotions.
Ditto-- I had just seen the Christmas Day Special on FOX of the Madden story of the bus and his career. Highly recommend it. It had a feeling that he was terminally ill as he is shown watching it.
Try to imagine what the NFL would look like, without Bill Walsh and John Madden, growing up on opposite sides of the bay, attending public colleges and finding their way to the 49ers and the Raiders. The way the game is presented by the coaches and broadcasters is forever tied to two Bay Area guys.
He definitely spread a lot of joy. Even though he had to quit coaching due to his health, I'm glad he became the beloved commentator and personality that everyone came to know.
Rest In Peace Coach
ReplyDeleteShedding some tears this afternoon. Rest in peace, Coach, and thank you.
ReplyDeleteRIP. He had a terrific life, like a boss.

ReplyDeleteMadden. A true icon of Americana right up there with apple pie, baseball and coca-cola. Very sad about his passing.
ReplyDeleteYes, Rest In Peace. But crying?!? C'mon--Madden would call y'all a big bunch of babies.

ReplyDeleteI think Heather Holmes was spot on when she imagined what the 49ers would look like without Joe Walsh? And the Partridge Family without John Madden?
