Yeah, the Giants Rock, But the 49ers Rule; NFL is King; Sunday Coffee

THE GIANTS ARE BIG, but the 49ERS RULE THE BAY AREA SPORTS DOMAIN

Even as they DOMINATE the baseball landscape (and they clearly are the BEST team in the bigs) the Giants are NO MATCH for football's 49ers. NFL ratings are KING and that is evident in the Bay Area. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. Which is why KNBR is perplexed (the Giants will remain on KNBR today--KGO carries the 49ers-Detroit) and not so thrilled.

KNBR has two competing clients but the Niners' stronghold on the Bay Area sports media domain. And here's the killer: while the Giants numbers are solid, the 49ers (NFL) numbers are off the chart. Again, it's noy even close.

*Greg Papa, when he's in his strictly radio, play-by-play mode, is one of the best in the game. He's at his worst, lately, when he talks his talk on KNBR --the talk show.

*OUTSIDE KPIX the other night, a HUGE throng of camera guys all dressed in black; looked like something out of a movie. It was. But the PIXers had no idea what was going on and THAT was the story.

*Tim Ryan would be damn great if he were to LOWER the level and QUIT the coffee intake.

  1. You can't call yourself The Sports Leader when you put on senior citizens reminiscing about baseball instead of the NFL.

    1. Marty Lurie has had a great run but in today's sports media world, longer postgame shows like what Marty did last decade, just doesn't work as much nowadays. Shorter attention spans and hot takes dominate a lot of sports talk radio shows today, and less fan/caller interaction.

Marty is great and it's cool that he gives fans a chance to chime in and doesn't cut them off, but as years went on, Marty kind of became boring. The Giants missing the playoffs from 2017 to last year didn't help, but in a way I guess I can see why they (KNBR/Larry Baer/Lee Hammer/someone else) and/or Marty switched to Marty only doing his pregame show on the weekends.

They were filming the Lifetime Original "Veronica De La Cruz: Tragedy and Triumph," starring Brenda Song and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Danny DeVito plays VDLC's father, "Shorty" Cruz.

  4. Wish Papa would go back to the Raiders. His over the top screaming and cheerleading is a tough listen. Just call the action and leave the opinions and commentary for after the play (and not during the play). Greg: your are the play-by-play announcer.

    1. The Raiders loss is the Niners gain. It's nice and kind of cool to have Greg Papa on the Niners radio broadcasts, even though yeah, you can't help but think of his Raider ties when you listen to him calling a Niner game. Like Ted Robinson, Greg Papa had no previous ties to the Niners organization, and we eventually got used to Ted Robinson calling Niner games when he did.

Greg Papa is a smart guy. Yeah, at times he can be long winded, even when he's calling a game when there's a small break in the action, but Greg Papa is still one of the best NFL radio play-by-play guys out there.

  5. Free Round pizza for life? Now that's a deal I could agree with for sure.

  6. When I was watching something on KPIX this weekend I saw a new promo for their sports coverage and it clearly identified Dennis O'Donnell as part of the KPIX sports team. So they are maintaining the party line.

  7. WTF is up with KCBS Bay Area News Station. NO live sports reports (on the 15 and 45) all afternoon and night. They had a taped story about Derek Jeter. What ever anchor they have on try's and read the local sports news. 24/7 Eric Thomas and his co-pilots just butchered the sports. I know there are local sports stations that give local sports scores but KCBS sucks. Who's running the ship over there?

  8. Andrea Nakano should anchor the sports desk if and when O’Donnell returns. I cannot stand Vern Glenn. His voice intonations and the Raaaiiddeers may have worked at KRON, but spare me the BS.

Nakano is experienced and she can report the sports not sounding or looking an idiot.
