KGO RADIO last night--the evening of Election Day around the nation; traditionally off-year elections are not newsworthy. Even locally, SF Mayor, London Breed, was easily re-elected and there was no surprise there.
Nationally it was another story as a historically safe red state, Kentucky, voted in (probably) a Democratic candidate and Virginia's political body went all Democrat; given the facts at hand, a negative night and possible precursor for Pres. Donald Trump's political undoing. A BIG night.
And KGO was broadcasting --get this--a pre-season Cal basketball game--I think maybe 15 people were listening but I may be too high. Of course I'm joking but it sounded ridiculous --I'm quite sure John Rothmann, (KGO's political guru) was chomping at the bit and probably disgusted, but in this case, KGO had no choice.
KGO is contractually committed to broadcast Cal football and basketball. It just so happened it was an election night and basketball season begun --which more than likely ticked off a ton of listeners. Oh well.
*KGO-TV is adding a new broadcast reporter to its Southbay coverage; Julian Glover starts next week and rumor has it, a longtime Circle7 reporter is set to be gone by the end of the week.
*Pat Thurston had a terrific guest on her Wednesday show; a Watergate prosecutor, Nick Ackerman, stole the show, I'm sure, KGO will have the interview up later today, it's worth a listen.

ReplyDeleteKGO radio management apparently didn't realize there was an election conflict with the basketball schedule. Seems like common sense and a little pre-planning would allow them to pre-plan a work-a-round for this sort of thing. Why wouldn't they place wording in the basketball contract that allows KGO to air basketball game on another Cumulus station? I mean when there are news-story conflicts. Doesn't seem like rocket science.
It’s weird to come up here to the Bay Area and hear Chip Franklin playing a liberal on KGO 810. When he was on KOGO 600 San Diego, he played a conservative. I guess radio talk hosts are just actors, playing whatever role is called for in the script.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking about actors, John Rothmann sure likes to talk about how bad Trump is. I agree. But why does he insist on using the term “President of the United States” every 10 seconds. Is it for dramatic effect. I mean we all know he’s talking about the President of the United States, not the president of the PTA. Can't he just say "President" and finish the sentence? It might be because he has a four-hour show and needs to stretch it out, but it sounds silly. Then again, after 5 minutes of him, I usually change stations.
Agreed. Chip and his perra flaca are the worst.
DeleteRich I really like it when you write positive columns, like your comments about Pat Thurston, I listened to some of that interview, was in and out of the car, and yes it sounded very interesting and enlightened, not some Trump hater no matter what (and I'm no Trump fan), but a lawyer who knows what he is talking about.
ReplyDeleteIf the long timer isn't Anthony, Bernard, or Brinkley, I am interested as to which long timer it would be as the others seem to remain sturdy. Then again, not all is as it seems.
ReplyDeleteTo put it in basketball parlance: No harm, no foul. It wasn't a presidential or gubernatorial race...and everyone knew Mayor Breed had another term locked up..so in the grand scheme of things, it was no biggie.
ReplyDeleteBesides, most political junkies were tuned in to the Kentucky/Virginia races anyways.
People would tune into KGO 810 for election coverage...........
ReplyDeletein 1985.
The greatest generation is gone bro. Hippie retread, boomer influenced world and radio now. Why is why it's all so fucked up.
15. That was the attendance at the recent Cal Football game.
ReplyDeleteI caught John Rothmann last night and felt sorry for him. There was this caller who asked him where the quid pro quo was in the transcript of Trump's call with the Ukrainian leader. He caught John flat footed. John stammered and tried to change the subject, and eventually cut the caller off. Then another caller asked the same question, and John dodged the question by saying they'll know next week when the hearings start. I felt so sorry for John. Because if there's no quid pro quo, then the whole case against Trump is over. It was an embarrassing few minutes for John. I hope he reviews the transcript, finds the quid pro quo, and goes on the air tonight to let people know where it is. This tactic of evading the question doesn't make him look very good.
ReplyDeleteA verbatim, complete transcript has yet to be released. Impossible for Mr Rothman to fully answer your question until that occurs.
DeleteYOu don't understand the law. There is, actually, quite clearly, a quid pro quo in the partial, non-verbatim transcript foolishly released by the WH. There is no requirement that anyone has to say the words,"quid pro quo". Do you even know what the words mean? They mean "tit for tat", "this for that". In extortion schemes, dangling a "that" in exchange for "this", is a "quid pro quo".
DeleteHey, Christine, I know you're really smart and all that. And I know we're not talking about finding the words "quid pro quo" in the transcript, we're looking for words from Trump that say something to the effect that Ukraine won't get military aid until they investigate Biden. So given all of your intelligence, can you tell me where in the transcript that demand can be found? I know it must be there because honest people like Adam Schiff say it's there, but I can't find it. Just give me the place in the transcript where it appears.
