NBC has stepped up its offer to KNTV (NBC Bay Area) lead anchor, Raj Mathai, quite substantially --how much so?--Mathai is under contract another two years in San Jose (at roughly $450K per year) and is quite happy with his situation and growing family. Only a YUGE offer would tempt his appetite for a trip to 30 Rock and that's what NBC is betting too; so here's my contact telling me the Peacock is offering 4 years and $750K per year plus all moving expenses and a temporary pad in suburban Jersey. That's a helluva offer but my guess is Raj stays put.
The NY market and network exposure is high on Mathai's list and he'd be a tremendous asset to NBC and its cable platforms (like MSNBC and CNBC) but Raj is still young and can make that move when his kids get older and hi family situation allows it. If he (Raj) were 35 and didn't have young kids, he'd be gone in a NY-second.
*RONN Backlash --an e-mail sent my way on Sunday night, several in fact; "why are you badgering Ronn Owens; he's elderly now, why are you kicking him down when's he's out?" I'm paraphrasing but you get the gist. The truth hurts.
Why am I badgering Ronn?
You mean the same Ronn who while his colleagues were gathering their belongings and being escorted out of the building, he was laughing and giggling with a Cumulus exec over his contract? That Ronn? You mean the Ronn who went on the radio after the first massacre and excitedly told the shocked listeners, "we're going to have a great new radio stations!" You mean the Ronn, who kissed the behind of the Cumulus exec at North Beach Restaurant after the funeral of Gene Burns, who died shortly after the firing blitz of a literal broken heart; the same Gene Burns who collapsed in the Embarcadero building immediately after he was told to get lost by the infamous woman in black. All the while, Ronn Owens was giggling en fuego in an adjacent hallway when the boom went down. YOU MEAN the same Ronn Owens who asked, to take a picture with Randall Bloomquist, a Cumulus asswipe who just earlier had an affair with a female Cumulus exec who curried favor by having multiple sexual trysts with KGO execs, producers, and the like--that Ronn?
Ronn Owens |
And Ronn Owens Lowenstein is a truly despicable person who cheated on his wife; had a six month affair with a former KGO guest and was kicked out of the house in Seacliff by his wife, Jan Black. He's also a very duplicitous man with a curious case of overpowering women and backstabbing those he deems as a threat.
Now that he's lost any and all leverage and his career is essentially over and he's just hanging on, I have ZERO pity or empathy for the guy. If it's me and only me that calls him out, so be it. I Can live with it.

Wow!! that was some tirade!! Feel better??
ReplyDeleteRonnn was kept when far better, more entertaining hosts were cut. Ronnn began waving the cumulus flag while desks were still being cleaned out. He is the living embodiment of everything thats wrong with 810 and the cloud thats hung over the bay area sense 2011. Hammer away Rich !!
ReplyDeleteRonn was kept on because his contract was better and more expensive than others. Cumulus didn't want to spend the money to buy him out.
DeleteTime for Rajjj to go. We already have Ron Burgundy. Enjoy New Yawk!
ReplyDelete> ...network exposure is high on Mathai's list and
ReplyDelete> he'd be a tremendous asset to NBC...
Young and ethnic. A corporate wet dream.
They only offer, so often. Too many, "No, not right now" will send them looking elsewhere.
DeleteNot asking you to have pity for Ronn, neither do I, I liked his show, especially years ago, I don't really concern myself with the personal life of talk show hosts. Surely it sounds like Ronn behaved in a less than compassionate way, when other hosts were let go, I can see why that is upsetting, thing is you have pointed that out many times, I suppose for those who are late comers to this blog it is useful information, to those of us who read it daily it comes off as overkill. Besides that I don't understand why you see the need to censor comments that are defending Ronn, even though that defense is very tepid. That's all I'm saying.
ReplyDeleteNow tell us how you really feel!
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly is this "Ron Owens Report" on the radio today?
ReplyDeleteSeems like constant 10 minute babble... In a "carnival barker" style.
What the hell is that?
A report?
Let me tell you what I learned about Ronn Owens first hand over the years: Everyone thinks Ronn is their friend at some point, usually early on because he wants it to appear he's some type of magnanimous individual. But then over time when you present any type of threat, or even a difference of opinion (god forbid you disagree with him to a higher-up, or made him look bad), and you'll find yourself on the fast track right out of KGO, or at the very least no one near his program.
ReplyDeleteRonn Owens is the consummate ass-kisser to anyone above him, and the consummate shit-talker about anyone below him, or a threat to him.
I wish him nothing but the worst.
I think Owens should retire to Napa, Petaluma and find a local station there where he can show up at 10 a.m. - do two hours and then get on with his day. Or a weekend show where he talks to all his old guests, gadget guy, Willie Brown, and other people who don't matter any more.
ReplyDeleteHey! I live in the North Bay. Bad enough we have Radnich hobnobbing around here.
DeleteWould prefer if Owens moved to the South Bay and got on a local station there. Maybe the one that advertises on this blog? KSCO
NBC tonight...Two sexy women with two sexy names, Jessica and Vicky delivering the News, two reasons not to watch any other channel. Give Jessica a new contract and give Vicky a pay raise...it's just money!
ReplyDeleteAsian women wear the short/split dresses/skirts the best, it's in their DNA. The women are the News.
If they don't give Jessica a new contract, then they have to decide what foot they want to shoot.
on the subject of KGO, there are two things that really annoy me about john rothman..one is his sappy intro, no place i would rather be then with you, sounds like a love letter to himself.. the other is when he is railing against trump, which is fine, except he tries to be cute and says "but wait, wait, wait there's more!"..it was ok the first couple of times, now its got really old really fast.. i like rothman for the most part, but just stick to the narrative without trying to act silly
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about Rothman's corny and overused "There's no place I'd rather be" line. Besides, didn't he steal that from some commercial?
DeleteJohn Rothmann is merely following the advice of radio consultants to have a memorable tagline. That's why we call him, "Dan RAW-THER".
ReplyDeleteLove how Cumulus dimwit Reader's Digest reject CEO Mary Berner is taking a victory lap over her failed company eeking out a profit last quarter. I could show a profit too if I could screw over my creditors and zero out my debt in Chapter 11 the way Dumulus did.
ReplyDeleteRonnnnns program has always been radio pablum. I remember him after the massacre acting like he just barely survived and had survivors guilt but the show must go on. I quit listening on a regular basis after the massacre and I while I missed many of the host. I never thought about tuning in to listen to Ronnnnn
ReplyDeletethey have to get rid of ronn's 10 minutes of madness. i feel sorry for the guy, but its simply 10 minutes of wasted time.
