Thanks, Salesforce Tower.
This is not earth-shattering; this is not the homeless problem; this has nothing to do with the pathetic state of the Tenderloin and human waste seen on the street; this is a lot less sexy then all those but it's still important and yet, the Bay Area media pays no attention. It is not surprising. I'll embellish.
I'm not a gung-ho architectural guy but I love looking at certain buildings. The Transamerica Pyramid first viewed was a definitive SF identity picture. It is now lost by the presence of the benignly humongous Salesforce Tower. This is urban blight in a different way but nevertheless problematic and confounding. Why? Well, it's not as if the Salesforce building is ugly and unseemly it's just that its presence has wiped out a singular Bay Area visual; the Pyramid; the BofA Building; those two iconic structures that you see in old "Streets of SF" episodes and now gone with the wind.
Again, don't get me wrong. The Salesforce Tower is a sight to behold; to me, it looks like a giant pencil 61 stories high with majestic glass fixtures and even better, it's not tilting and looks cool at night but I'd love to hear what Herb Caen would call it if Herb were alive today. Oh my goodness, the possibilities are endless.

*The other morning I got up (good omen) and watched KTVU "Mornings on Two" which has not changed for the most part in years. MO2 is a ratings bonanza for Channel 2 although with fewer and fewer viewers. Sal Castaneda used to be a joy to watch; Sal was funny; had a dry sense of humor; knew traffic reports were not the most exciting subject matter to report on TV no less but had a steady personality and was consistently purposeful and edgy for a morning news show.

*Jack Swanson is the husband of Melanie Morgan who used to work with the late Lee Rodgers and then subsequently, current KSFO host; the pompous Brian Sussman. Sussman had quite a falling out with Morgan; it's been six years.
The obvious feeling is that Swanson will axe Sussman and get some fresh blood in the morning. He may or may not but there is no love lost between Jack and Sussman. Jack doesn't care for Brian but Brian has decent ratings which is helped by KSFO being the only conservative radio station in the market and this being an election year, which helps drumming up the numbers.

*BOZO RADIO--Armstrong and Getty cater to the worst common denominator --mostly white male, uneducated men in their 50's and 60's. Of course there's exceptions but bottom line is that's their demo.
Jack Armstrong and Joe Getty: Bozo Radio on KGO |
*Another daily farce I DETEST currently fashionable on radio: The massively horrific use of the term, "In my opinion" by radio hosts, especially sports-talk radio hosts. "IN MY OPINION"? Well, SHIT! OFCOURSE it's YOUR opinion! Who else' opinion would it be then? Your buddy, your mom, your dad, the producer? Then why is this verbal gobbledygook foisted on us every day? Because it's another case of uneducated, ill-trained yahoos that haven't a clue what the hell they're saying; they're like trained monkeys that if they hear a phrase and think it sounds cool even if it really sounds retarded, they still say it, yeah, IN MY OPINION. Absolute morons.
*I like smart people that have an edge which is why I laud Paul Deanno. KPIX should get him behind the desk asap and rid us all of lame schmucks like Allen Martin and Ken Bastida, all retreaded news readers with all the warmth and conviction of a Daly City Jack-in-the-Box.

*So, Veronica De La Cruz is back. Oh Boy, like THAT'S gonna shake things up. GAME OFF!

*MOST OF YOU have cable or maybe some streaming device or DirectTV, whatever...you pay, on average, lets just be conservative and say at least a hundred bucks a month. I'm being kind it's probably a lot more but just for argument sake.
Then do this: How much is $25 for the year? Roughly 2 bucks a month. Fifty cents a week.
You do the math.
I am your eyes and ear for BAY AREA MEDIA: You come here regularly looking forward to and EXPECTING news and commentary that doesn't exist in this market. WHY IS THAT? I have no clue. > behind the scenes Tokuda was lampooned by her own staff at KPIX.
ReplyDeleteAnd KRON. Probably even more at KRON, where she had ZERO respect. (Pam Moore couldn't stand her.)
Actually ironic that she ended up at KPIX, the first time she was there she was great (think Loma Prieta coverage). Dave McElhatton was very upset they did not hire her when she came back to the biz. I believe they took Dana King instead. Mac took that very hard.
Once Radnich did one of his schtick things and even though he told both Wendy and Catherine Heenan what he was going to do before the break, when he came back and did it Catherine picked up the ball but Wendy just stood there like a deer in the headlights. Coming out of the elevator after the newscast he said to me, "Tokuda is no good without the prompter." Someone else in the elevator, I think it was the director, said, "She's no good with it either!" True.
What annoyed me is she'd often try to blame the writer of her copy for her mistake. Even when you put pronouncers of the most common names into the text (Don-ahld Rumz-feld) she'd screw up. ("Ronald Dumsfeld"...yes, she said that on air.)
Once the producer failed to write her name into the introduction page of the script. Broadcast started: "Welcome, I'm Pam Moore..." "And I'm—" and she stopped and stared blankly, because "Wendy Tokuda" wasn't on the prompter.
How she kept her job is beyond me. Anchors and reporters with ten times her ability were shown the door quicker, at KRON at least.
I LOVE Wendy Tokuda. She butchered the English language
Deleteso frequently, I found it highly entertaining. My high school English teacher gave us an assignment one election night. Count the number of Wendy's mistakes and report back. She was the Queen of Redundancy -- "Newsome is out ahead and Gonzalez is trailing behind."
Ronald Dumsfeld? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This Livermore commentator never heard that mistake, but believes all of Berkeley are howling even louder at that, and loving it. Anyway, Tokuda was immensely helped by her agent....Leigh Steinberg, only one of the most successful agents in sports, television, and other high profile professions, even while being a recovering alcoholic. There it is, how Tokuda's career endured for as long as it did.
Delete"white male, uneducated men in their 50's and 60's"
ReplyDeleteYou literally just described the voting bloc keeping California Dems in power the last 20 years.
No, Rich described you. To a fare thee well.
DeleteClearly, you study demographic voting patterns...
DeleteNot surprised Papa is as loathsome off mike as he is on.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget Lisa Kim, who was high profile on KNTV news for far too long. I couldn't stand listening to her, so I almost never did.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, Tokuda was a total trainwreck. Loved the elevator story. That speaks volumes.
The Salesforce tower is way late to the obscuring party. The B of A and TransAmerica buildings led the way and many have followed.
ReplyDeleteHow long has it been since Pacific Bell stopped flying the wind warnings atop their building because boaters could no longer see the flags?
There's no turning back. Salesforce won't be a sore thumb for long.
Herb Caen would tell you to stop trying to look at the TransAmerica Pyramid from Rincon and to get your ass up to North Beach.
ReplyDeleteI think way back when, KPIX felt a need to hire an Oriental due to the local population. They should have hired her sister Marilyn, she was gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteYes, I used the term Oriental, it is not a bad word.
I agree.
DeleteSo many people with their fake "look at me everyone I'm mad" outrage. Lots of lonely people out there.
Not a bad word but it does make you sound really old and out of touch.
DeleteA couple of things:
ReplyDelete1. Herb Caen has been dead a long time. His column was the project of a time that has since passed.
2. As noted above there are many tall buildings now in the Financial District. No need to pick on one.
3. You keep talking about massive change at channel 5. Yup, getting rid of the morning traffic reporter changes the dynamic at the station.
4. Don't just point out the ratings, post them. Let us make up our minds about who's up and why.
5. Try being positive and I mean more than telling me on a daily basis how smart Paul Dean is.
@ 8:20 -- Certainly no shortage of them on Bay Area news broadcasts anymore. Just saying (no racist motive on my part).
ReplyDeleteOnce again, you prove that you don't get A&G. There is no fake laughter. They're the only ones on the radio who can talk about Trump without dripping with hate or acting like fanboys. And "the conscience of a NATION" is meant to be ironic. In fact they changed it from 'the nation' to 'a nation' because it sounded more pretentious. If they leave KGO, I will never listen to that station again
ReplyDeleteThe Salesforce building looks like an uncircumcised pecker wrapped in tin foil.
ReplyDeleteAtrocious.
Veronica De La Cruz is a sweet person...and very professional. As well, she is a tireless philanthropist. She is one of the few bright spots on the local news.
