YES, YOU HEARD RIGHT: Gil Gross is doing a stint on KGO Radio later this week, Friday I'm told. And that's too bad.
I met Gross a few years back at the "Jersey Boys" opening at the Curran. Nice guy. Wife very cordial. I have nothing against him personally.
I can't stand his show. Never thought he was that good on radio. The constant repetition. The indelible ego. The audacity of him putting his wife on once a week even though she was worse.
Rhoda is a nice woman but she is horrible on radio; obviously Gil didn't care. And the few listeners he had also hated Rhoda on the air. She sounded like some NY woman that sang to the audience for some off-Broadway show before the curtains were drawn.
If this is Jack Swanson's first audition for a possible host on the new iteration, it's a bad omen.
Later today: The new Chip Franklin. I like the change.
Chippie will never change his style! he is an arrogant loud mouth with a voice similar to finger nails on a chalkboard.
ReplyDeleteGross is OK if he takes calls, not for a monologue. Hope he drops the stretching of words, e.g soooooooo
ReplyDeleteHeeeeeee will......
DeleteNot only the stretching of words, but TERRIBLE habit of getting half way though a sentence or thought then going on a tangent and never completing the original thought. Very, very distracting and bothersome. Gil isn't the only talk show host who does this, but very prevalent in his presentation.
ReplyDeleteNails on chalkboard == Pat Thurston. Sounds like a whiny 5 year old.
ReplyDeleteGil has annoying vocal affectations, "Welllllll, Yeahhhhhhhhh", but far preferable to the race-mongering Copie. Yeah we know you're not necessarily a black guy. Dont need to constantly tell us that every 2 seconds. We can just check with all your ex white wives.
Gross is doing a fill-in as a favor. He has other irons in the fire.
ReplyDeleteWill the wife be appearing as well? How about LLY
DeleteI like Gil. Hes fun, and I don't care what other people say!
ReplyDeleteI think Mr Gross makes an excellent talk show host for the San Francisco center-left market, which should be KGO's prime target. I do agree w/you rich that the hubby/wife team on Friday's didn't work on his prior show at the other station. No disrespect at all to Gil's wife Rhoda. Its just that the talk show host job is extremely difficult even for an expert, and takes years of experience to gain the right mixture of insightful comments, humor, and cultivating callers. The other problem w/ the hubby/wife idea, their personal chemistry gets in the way of relaxed yet pointed conversation.
