"EXPECT MORE" at 11 PM; Really now? Management sure does.
KPIX in free fall with numbers DOWN in virtually all time slots; morning, midday and evening and, yes, 10 PM and 11.
So indeed everyone is expecting more.
Analysis:
*Ken Bastida: veteran anchor status unknown but it's worth noting new contract up in the air with uncertain future. There's word he's either taking a big pay cut or taking a buyout from CBS. My bet is he stays but gets significantly less coin.
*Elizabeth Cook: seems safe. Actually, in my book she's a lot better now on air both straight forward anchoring and ad-libbing. Better then Bastida but that ain't saying much. Yeah, daddy still has major influence in industry but Liz has discovered how to read the teleprompter without major stuttering. A keeper for now.
*Paul Deanno: Stock up. Station officials and CBS higher-ups figuring out a way Deanno might switch from weather to anchoring news. Still in talking stages but probably happening early 2019.
*Dennis O'Donnell: safe, for now. Sports Pretty boy gets reprieve because Walnut Creek housewives love his boyish looks.
I know he's not on in the evenings, but how, just how, did Kenny Choi even make it past his first interview?
ReplyDeleteNo presence whatsoever, and a face for radio. Absolutely unwatchable.
Rich, off topic but do you know what ever happened to weatherman Michael Kelting from KRON several years back? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteChoi, like Aqui - deer in the headlights look. Same with Brick Sal.
ReplyDeleteIf the technical folks at CBS's channel 5 (kpix) follow the action here, fyi there's a problem with the over the air digital-tv transmission signal to the south bay for some reason. All the other major stations come in like gang-busters on the on-screen signal strength meter (I.e. channel 2, 4, 7, 9, 11, 20, 36, 44 .. etc all come in with very high signal strengths. Meanwhile channel 5 for some reason, the weakling of the set, shows a signal strength that is so low that the receiver is unable to form a picture for viewing quite often. Other times the picture appears viewable for a while, then pixels start to drop out intermittently.
ReplyDeleteGo to antennaweb.org, and put in your address, to see where you should point your antenna. But channel 5's transmitting antenna is at the same location as Channel 2, Channel 50, Channel 38, Channel 44, Channel 9, Channel 4, Channel 42, Channel 54, Channel 55, Channel 7 (NB: There are two Channel 7 transmitter sites and two Channel 2 transmitter sites), so it's not obvious why you can get 2, 7, 9, and 44 but not 4.
DeleteBastida seems like he is going through the motions, lately. And I agree that Cook has improved since her early days at the station.
ReplyDeleteDeanno, rain lover that he is, may hike back up to Seattle. The drought just gets worse.
ReplyDeletePaul Deanno will be a great competitor against Dan Ashley. My money is on Paul.
ReplyDeleteGreat chops.
.
Paul Deanno will be a great competitor against Dan Ashley. Can’t wait to see him do the news broadcast.
ReplyDeleteI like Paul Deanno a lot. Especially amusing when he has the nauseous look on his face around sports time. Liz a lot better now that she is not trying to make stupid conversation. What happened to Bastida? All in all, I'm over KPIX, and the new standing while delivering the news seems like a lame gimmick. Wish I could just find a good, unbiased newscast here in the Bay Area. Haha, that will never happen.
ReplyDeleteI've watched Kenny Choi. I don't get all the hate---he seems pretty solid. Is he a "hunk?" (in the white-people's sense). No--he looks like a Silicon Valley engineer. But some of us (I'm a blue-eyed blonde) think Silicon Valley engineers CAN be sexy. I'm not saying KC is sexy--but he's kinda cute and charming...seems like a nice guy.
ReplyDeleteHe reads the news...seems to get along with his co-anchors. That's what matters to me. as a news viewer.
That Elizabeth Cook is so bland and boring. And that deep voice she has, yuck. Seems they're doing nothing with Maria Medina who would he a ray of sunshine over that horrid Michelle.
