Thurston Delivers Meat and Potatoes Talk Radio; Deserves Full-Time Shot on KGO; Monday Nosh

I have warmed to listening to Pat Thurston on KGO.

Why?

Because although her politics are a little more to the left then mine, Thurston has become more entertaining and informative. She's broadened her appeal and I'm now more a believer.

I've often said that I want entertaining broadcasts and I'm on board. Case in point, the late Lee Rodgers, whose politics were more far right than I cared for yet Rodgers was a must listen because he was great on radio regardless of our disagreements.

Thurston is more my appetite politically but she's also good at picking topics and talking news of the day.

Her movie shows are a good listen and I'm not even a big movie fan. The other night I was glued to the radio as she and film critic, Tim Sika, schmoozed movies and the show elicited cogent conversation and excellent callers.

On a totally different and far more serious matter, Thurston discussed the opposition to Breast-Feeding UN resolution orchestrated by the Trump administration and was outraged, like everyone else, over this affair. It was genuine and compelling and it hit a talk-radio zeitgeist; the very epitome of caller interaction and debate, (although I don't know how anyone could take the opposite side but that's not the point here).

Thurston, at the very least, deserves a permanent shot Monday through Friday, although three hours on the weekend, say, 4-7 PM, would be welcome too, at least for me.

Her playlist is solid. She's got a nice voice. She's an excellent interviewer and she loves to engage and debate. That's good radio. I'll take it.

  1. yes, good voice, but Tim Sika ALL THE TIME? And her feelin the Bern crap last year was nauseating. Now we've got DUMBASS. Happy Pat?

  2. I can’t listen to her. I switch stations after a minute or two. She’s misinformed when it comes to politics and I’m a Democrat who supported Bernie. What’s “entertaining” (your word) about her diatribe? She just recites talking points I can get from anywhere. I can’t see any station thinking she should be part of their future. I wonder if you want the old KGO (circa 2010) to return so badly you’ll promote anybody from that era?

    1. And I thought I was the only one. Thank you!

    2. Anon at 1:46 is correct; she's either uninformed or partially informed on most important stuff. And she's too much of a Trump-hater to make listening enjoyable.

    3. Who else would you recommend? Her and Rothman are the best they got out there and they deserve weekday primetime spots.

    4. Anyone that hates everything about anyone(like she is with Trump)is an agenda driven con artist and shouldn't have their own platform. Period

    5. Yep, two minutes max for Pat, I can take Bearman for almost 5.

    6. To 9:18 if that is they way you feel, then neither Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and other right wing host, as well as some left wing should not have a platform. I prefer a host who is more balanced and take calls from people who disagree with them. I listen to Michael Medved and Tom Sullivan, because although conservative they are fair and willing to engage with callers that disagree with them.

    7. dear 11:10...we get it. You have a perpetual hard-on for Michael Medved and Tom Sullivan. Both are as bland as pablum, which is perfect for mush brains..There is nothing edgy, engaging or unpredictable about either one.

  3. She is easy to "spin-up"...so I will have to call and completely fluster her just for the fun of it.

Hope she has a very well trained producer/screener.

    1. @ 2:24pm..Yeah, right...please do call in and "spin-up" and say you're the guy on Rich's blog. You right wingers are the most ignorant callers with zero facts, like your God Trump. Now back to your Fox News...they're praising Trump's SC pick. Another kooky Scalia jackoff.

    2. Don't fret @6:26pm Trump will be removed by the 25 amendment in 2025.

To be replaced with President Pompeo or President Gowdy.

    1. Pat is not a fill in host, she has always had her own show on KGO. I like her, I prefer John Rothmann, I agree her dislike of Trump make her believe things that most likely won't happen, John pulls her back to reality.

    2. She's fill-in talent and a weekend host. Not bad at what she does but she's not getting new listeners to tune in. Rothman is no different in that regard. He's like a panel guest on CNN.

  5. Hummus is ,essentially, a sort of ''middle eastern mayonnaise'' if you want.think of it like that. a staple , like mayo. or custard, no eggs neede .hummus can imitate mayonnaise or custard.reflecting the basic culture of simplicity. and Dave Fleming is like a canned broadcaster. he talks like he's interested in the teams ,but might not be caring one way or another.

  6. If they hired Doug Harvill to put Rothman and Thurston on then we can officially OFFICIALLY stop talking about KGO.

  7. I have never warmed to her. One thing I strongly dislike about her is her unfair technique with callers. Unlike John Rothman who welcomes debate and will go back and forth in his exchanges with call-in listeners, she lets them have their say then hangs up and dismisses them with her slant never giving them a chance to respond or further challenge her. She's unfair and a bully.

    1. You are 100 % correct. She does that because she cannot back up her arguments. Facts are not for everyone....

  8. @4:59: I've always found the vast majority of talk radio hosts to be rude in how they use the callers and then rudely discard them without so much as a thank-you. This has been happening for decades, so you can't blame today's complete lack of civility for it.

  9. You still need call screeners, a producer, engineers who know how to produce political talk radio.

You can have interns and pets screen calls for Lifestyle shows, but you need real people for political talk , because the callers are just insane and unpredictable in the BA.

  10. i always found her kinda of flightly or dittzy at times..plus when she and john rothman are on, she will sometime interupt him at the wrong time to interject something that is already known.. if there is nothing on at all (ballgame) might listen to her

  11. I have always enjoyed Pat Thurston and find her point of view refreshing.

  12. I called in once to her show about illegal immigrants/aliens.

She called me anti immigrant because I am opposed to illegals. I told her that I am a legal immigrant so how can I be anti myself??

    She then cut the call.

She doesnt like debate; only with someone she agrees with. It is why she has very little callers.

Thats why Rothmann is the best. He takes lots of callers no matter if they agree or disagree

  13. I will admit, Pat is enjoyable to listen to even though I strongly disagree with her politics. Much better than bitter old Chip franklin
