The Sunday 415 Media Happy Hour: This, That and the Other; Red Dresses; Cooking Show Infomercials; Dan Ashley Consistency on KGO; Frank Somerville Mini-Clarification; KTVU in Full 'Foxification'; Randy Hahn Bonanza; Neda Iranpour Voice Officiallly Irritating; The 1-800 'No Cuffs' Guy Makes Me Laugh; KFOG: Even if the Station Sucks, Call Letter Value; Mick LaSalle Go-To Sunday Read in Chron; The Clint Eastwood/KGO Story Too Good To Be True; Bottoms Up

Image result for sf bay area media celebrities THE BLOODY MARY: Our TV weather yentas have found the color red their nirvana. In fact, patterned red and black have become regular fashion faire. Now if they could only get the forecast right.

*GIN&Tonic: Speaking of weather, (and you all know how I feel about that) is it my imagination or do KTVU and KRON do about ten or so weather updates every hour? It's especially evident on the weekend too which might be a reason why everyone under the sun is tuning out.

*Kettle One rocks, splash of soda with a twist: The other day when the shit hit the fan at 'PIX (DR out) a wake of sorts took place around the corner at Old Ship; once again, the putz who likes to yell and scream and thinks highly of himself was at the center of the bar drinking long and tipping short.

Especially the guy with the red hair and shiksa sidekick who loves to use 'THE AMAZING PRESSURE COOKER!' I don't know if the fried chicken tastes as good as it looks on TV but I'd love to give it a try.

*Shot of Jack: I've been speaking negatively about the stale Bay Area TV News scene and I come upon a frequent word: tame. Nothing stands out; there is no creative force; no spark; no energy. Everyone does the same thing over and over. Consistent dreck and no end in sight. Except the 5000 weather updates. Clever. What ingenuity.

Randy Hahn
*Sparkling Zinfandel: a breath of fresh air and candor and spark en fuego; the broadcaster who made me a hockey fan with his superb pipes and vocal esteem: Sharks pbp announcer, Randy Hahn.

*To prepare, to execute, to show consistency and treat every newscast as if it's page one content: this is why I like KGO's Dan Ashley.

*I never said Frank Somerville's technique on the air was lousy; quite the contrary. Somerville is quite the savvy anchor just maybe he's too good.

See, I'm just too damn critical.

*Yeah, KTVU is my chosen scorn because I can't stand what they've done to the gold standard of stations. The Foxification is in full gear and the product has been cheapened and marginalized to the max. Anchors giggle; talk gibberish for the sake of just phony talk and sweet-nothing banter. Like a carnival show. It's getting more and more difficult to watch. And the mantra from the masses: "Ve just following orders," prevails. Yeah, you have to feed the family.

Neda Iranpour
*Neda Iranpour update: the morning weather guesser/giggler on PIX/KCBS Radio: your voice is really beginning to irritate the heck out of me. It's either too many cigarettes or not enough coffee. Maybe time to work on that especially now since the uptight EP chickee took a hike.

Image result for 1-800 no cuffs*I found an original: The 1-800-No Cuffs guy makes me laugh out loud every time I hear him and that's hard, trust me.

If you're into that kind of thing.

*The reason why Cumulus has rebuffed suggestions that it turn vagabond KFOG into a KNBR-FM has to do with call letters. They are valuable and hold lots of leverage. It's why the dead guy on KFRC is still talking and Family Radio still owns the frequency because call letters and vintage dial position creates moolah even if the price is too high.

Mick LaSalle
*Mickey Luckoff, yes, the old KGO/ABC pioneer bought some old, small-market radio stations but doesn't have the juice to pull off a new-KGO deal simply because Father Time has taken its toll.

*The very best Sunday read in the Chronicle: film critic and writer, Mick LaSalle, who is my go-to read first thing and I'm not much into movies so that's a telling stat. LaSalle is lucid and splendid over a Peets coffee and bagel. Pass the cream cheese while you're at it.

*Authenticity is a unique entity because it shows firsthand how an artist, be it, he/she stands out in a vast media oasis. That can be in a bad way too, case in point, the shockingly awful "celebrity" chef on vagabond KGO Radio Death Valley Weekend 6 PM, Ryan Scott, a blustery fool of extreme crass and bloated minutiae. The human vomit machine with fake callers to boot.

Clint Eastwood
*The story that continues to make the rounds but is too good to be true: Clint Eastwood, still fairly lucid as he approaches sunset; the Oakland Tech alum still walking the streets of Carmel and living large off Pebble Beach Golf Course ownership assets, is a big buddy of former KGO host/scientist, Dr. Bill Wattenberg --so the story goes, Eastwood was considering buying a frequency in the Bay Area (think 610 AM) and creating a 2018 KGO like the old KGO. Could it happen? Yes. Will it happen? No, because it's too good to be true.

  1. Northern California hockey fans have been extremely lucky to have Hahn in this market, for the last 26 years.

    2. Yeah, I've listened to hockey in so many markets, and Hahn is honestly one of the best.... Great voice and style for hockey.

    1. I hate this, but I'm pretty sure this is now standard across the major market ABC O&Os now, traffic and weather on the 7s.....

    2. It's so much cheaper getting your weather from KGO...no data usage!

      Free weather on the 7's

  3. Yeah, I agree, way too many weather updates on KGO with their "never more than 7 minutes away from a weather update" slogan. It makes me thankful they are channel 7 and not channel 2 or we would have weather updates every 2 minutes!

  4. I actually like Neda Iranpour. I agree that her voice is really husky and scratchy, but man, she is quite something to look at, with that nice curvy body that is just the right size. She can't gain any more weight, or she will start to look like the previous weather gal, Roberta Gonzalez, but I do think that hiring Neda Iranpour was a good choice as the new Roberta Gonzales...

    1. Wow, every picture tells a story, especially the current posted one of Neda Iranpour who has clearly had let's say augmentation surgery since her TV news days in Reno where we always guessed her voice was a daily after-effect of the 24 hour Reno cocktail hour timetable, combined with her young age back then.

    2. Actually read her bio on the PIX page; she talks about her voice.

  5. Lets get Clint, Bill and Micheal Zwering together (KSCO) and get a bunch of bay area radio repeaters powered up so the station has a punch! Or just put the old KSFO out of its misery, do I ever miss Lee Rodgers!

  8. Wattenberg was in the last Dirty Harry film "The Dead Pools playing a TV talk show host. (Also look for an early film role for Jim Carrey )

  11. I'll second the Mick LaSalle nod.
Always have enjoyed his film reviews.
Plus (a big plus) he knows and understands film history. Without him, I never would have rented a silent film from Netflix or anyone else.
To quote Siskle and Ebert, two thumps ups.

  12. That would be interesting to see a new radio station, like the old KGO, come into being.

  13. NBA season has become a long exhibition until the season starts in playoffs. then the same team picks up the big check and you wait until they do it again. it's become a wait to get paid again ''Season''. there is no NBA Season. the Check is already in the mail.

  14. i hate to keep picking on "chef ryan" but...actually i take that back he is too easy to pick apart, his lame dad panel which is just plain embarrising, to his guests who all suck up to him and inflate his already over inflated opinion of himself to his uninformed opinion when he thinks he is actually discussing something important..
