'New' KGO? Don't Hold Your Breath; Yee, KSFO Morning Show Producer Call Out; Memo to Brian Sussman; Why Was Ronn Owens at Cumulus Meeting? Beats Me

YES OF COURSE, KGO will never ever be the old KGO no matter how much re-tooling and facelift it gets from Doug Harvill. Its best legacy was its past which would be OK but the new owners killed it when it still had a pulse and was relevant  and respected. Now it's become a certified joke with goofy topics and disjointed hosts talking about everything other people are not talking about. If Harvill were smart he would hire some fresh voices to begin with and work from there. This is not a one-day reset; it requires a fundamental change in format and philosophy and that takes about a year at best. Good luck.

Sherri Yee, the longtime producer for the "KSFO Morning Show, has become a hard-headed, ultra-right-wing diva who answers to no one and is now the queen of mean. Countess Mean, the queen of Morning Arrogance behind the scenes.

A local broadcast source says of Yee:

"She went from amiable, pleasant and competent to passive aggressive backstabbing and self-centered --she is not well-liked or regarded highly anymore by anyone."

* On Tuesday Mary Berner, Cumulus CEO, was addressing all the Cumulus employees in the Levi Auditorium --including Ronn Owens. I don't know what to make of that yet but when I do, I will tell you.

*Brian Sussman: you should know by now that the show has become a farce. I say that because I speak the truth and if that means losing a friendship, so be it. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. You had a one-time ratings spike but it's short-term. The show sounds like shit and has lost all the little respect it once had despite such hate-mongering and ultra, right-wing missives --now it's become a boring zoo show with sophomoric sound effects and moron mutiny. It caters to the lowest common denominator --a Lodi bingo club would be embarrassed. Brian, an honest opinion hurts but would hurt more if I didn't say it.

*Yeah, I know about the latest "progressive talk" station in town and I don't bother with it because there is no LOCAL host and all its talent are all, retread, out-of-towners. There's really no there, there.

  1. tell me why the KSFO rating is the second most listened to Cumulus Station in the SF bay area in the AM? without the Giants on KNBR, they would be down at the bottom! KSFO in my opinion is the best station during the week! No fake ass putrid news! tons of laughter and get everything we need: real news, weather and traffic! Unlike KNBR and other stations, KSFO only has 3 people on that morning show. It is more successful then stations with a crew for a morning show! Then we have Dr.Savage telling the people the truth of how incompetent the leftists fake snowflakes are and how the immigrants are stealing our jobs! #BuilldThatWall #MAGA, #AmericaFirst , #TrumpTrain

    1. I can't believe Rich printed your comment. Kudos to Rich for printing the truth! I can't wait for the uneducated children on here to hurl their hairpiece and orange insults. They regurgitate the MSLSD CNN HuffPo DNC talking points well.

    2. If the morning show on KSFO is more successful than others, it is because there is not much else to listen to. Although lately I prefer Armstrong and Getty, to Sussman's and Katie's silly juvenile show. Sussmann repeats words, then Katie repeat, then she chimes in with "UHU" and stupid laughter, whether it is called for or not. I'm not a Savage fan, nor am I a Republican or right wing, most middle of the road Democrats, however Savage has been right on the mark on several issue, i.e. Syria, and John Bolton. Like Savage or not, and most of the time I don't, but he is intelligent, and has insight most others don't. At least he is independent, and don't follow the Sean Hannity, Rush talking points.

  2. Whack jobs like 10:33 AM have, as of 11/8/16, facilitated the failure of the great experiment that used to be the UNITED States of America. Just look at the despots our reality star in charge chooses to schmooze with and who he shuns. Enjoy your new autocracy, all of you gullible nitwits.

Sussman always struck me as smarmy way back when he was doing the weather on lowly KNTV in the Monterey-Salinas viewing market. Why KPIX hired him is a great mystery. I wasn't the least bit surprised when I discovered years ago that he was spewing hate and alternative facts on KSFO. The loss of KSFO's popular music format with real radio personalities and Giants games was a true bay area tragedy.

    1. You mean like how your lord and savior Obama invited the likes of Al Sharpton, the rapper Ludacris (don't you love how he demeans women in his lyrics?), and his former very controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright (wait, didn't he distance himself from him while running for President?) to come schmooze and hang at the White House?

The adults are having a conversation.

    2. The Bay Area market supports about a 2.5 to 3.0 share of a conservative audience. It's enough for one station to make a reasonable ad audience and return. So, KSFO does well because it generally is the only place for that small but solid core of listeners. KGO cut off it's nose to spite it's face when it ran Armstrong and Getty in mornings on KGO, because the show is charitably right of center. So Cumulus screwed themselves by competing for the same audience. KSFO will remain a viable station, as long as no one else tries to split that audience with them.

    3. But, KNTV is in San Jose.

    4. KNTV studios have indeed remained in San Jose, but they moved to a larger, more state of the art facility after becoming the Bay Area NBC affiliate.

As part of the new NBC affiliation deal, KNTV made the switch from serving the Monterey/Salinas market and moved their transmitter from Loma Prieta to San Bruno Mountain.

    5. Monterry Bay Area and San Francisco Bay Area were the same media market until about 20 years ago. KNTV and KSBW were both the same big 3 affiliate station, then the FCC split the markets in 2.

  3. "Ultra right wing"....as opposed to the ultra left wing garbage that permeated the airwaves here throughout the 90's and 2000's and didn't draw a dime.

Generation Z can't cant come of age and take over soon enough. And its looking real good for the future of America. Save us from these snowflakes.

    1. Air America failed, lack of money, poor signal locally didn't help. Green 960 failed, poor signal locally. You put a lineup of all Libs on a strong signal like KGO or KSFO and promote it, it will get at least a 1.2. KGO is only at 1.8 to 2.2,...KSFO a bit higher, mid 2's.

    2. The best syndicated talk radio hosts on the air right now in the United States are probably Prager and Hewitt. They're polished, well educated and have depth. Medved has his moments but he's generally a low hanging fruit sort of host. Forget him if you want depth and most of the time I do.

I occasionally fire up FSTV on satellite and watch Thom Hartmann if for no other reason than to hear what the other guys have to say. He's no dummy. Ronn's certainly not a dumb guy but due to health reasons should probably just let go. There are guys who won't specifically because they're afraid they'll just die. He may very well be one of them.

  4. The issue with talk radio is not ultra right wing or ultra left wing, the issue is hosts who can hold your attention, and interact with callers. As for the 90's and 2000's, who are you talking about, Gene Burns, Lee Rogers, Ronn Owens, John Rothman?
I'm not looking for a host who I agree 100% with, or a host that only take callers from someone the host agrees with. I'm looking for a host and can talk about the issues, challenge my mind, and take callers of different opinion and engage with them. If you don't know what I'm talking about see if you can find parts of Gene Burns on Utube, or listen to John Rothmann (left) or Michael Medved and Tom Sullivan (both more to the right).

  5. Rich:
Do not let your blog dissolve in a fit of name calling. I don't give a shit whether someone is liberal or conservative. I can make up my own mind on political issues and do not need a cheering section from either side.

What is intolerable is the name calling in several of these messages. Do you need the clicks that badly that you would continue to allow which encourages more of that crap?

    1. I 100% totally agree. And I'm going to tell people (as I have in past) this is not a forum for name-calling.

Thanks for your feedback. Message clear.

  6. Breaking News! This just in. KGO 810 is flipping to 24/7 Chinese opera. No change in the ratings is expected.

  7. Fresh voices?!?!?! Didnt they try that with Ethan Boreman? WHo are the voices?!?!? Lets see your lineup Rich!

  8. KKSF 910 is a retread of what they did on 960 AM(KNEW) several years ago with some of those same hosts. I do not recall any rating higher than 0.6. This will flop once again.

FYI, on the latest radio ratings, KUIC (a station out of Vacaville and whose signal only goes as far south as Walnut Creek) actually tied KFOG with a 1.3 rating. And KBAY and KEZR (2 San Jose stations whose signals do not reach north of Union City) both have better ratings than KFOG (1.7 & 1.4 respectively). Someone needs to put KFOG out of its misery.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. KUIC for many, many years has been appearing in the SF rating book and good for them! And if you also combine the ratings of sister stations KKDV and KKIQ with KUIC since all three are under the moniker "Your Hometown Station", you have 2.1,an ever better SF advertising results story than KFOG. BUT if you throw in the SJ book (KFOG is a longtime simulcast @ 97.7) 2.1 = (SJ&SF) 3.4 Bay Area rating. Not awful, but respectable and will deliver results. (Please note that ALPHA owns KKDV, KKIQ, KUIC, KEZR & KBAY, all respectable billing and listener result orientated stations in a growing Bay Area corridor from SJ to Davis.)

    2. What 10:11 says isn't completely accurate. These published numbers are audience shares. Which means the percentage of all persons listening to radio who are listening to a particular station. So if KXXX has (let's say) a 2.1 share in the SF book, 2.1%, or 21 of every thousand listeners, are listening to KXXX in the average week during the ratings period.

Yes, you can add KUIC+KKIQ+KKDV's shares together, because those shares are all in the San Francisco market-wide ratings book. You can also add in KBAY's 1.7 and KEZR's 1.4 from the SF book, because that's apples-to-apples. But you can't use the numbers from the SJ book (5.2 and 4.5 respectively), because the SF book already includes the SJ listeners, and Nielsen considers SJ an embedded market inside SF. So when KBAY gets a 5.2% share of San Jose listeners, at the same time they're getting a much smaller share (1.7%) of all listeners reflected in the bigger SF book.

Because of the way the ratings work, the listeners to KFOG's simulcast on KFFG are already reflected in that 1.3 KFOG got in the SF book, even though they have a larger (2.1) share of the SJ audience when you only look at the SJ numbers. You can't add those together.

    3. Someone should put KFOG out of their misery. The Woody Show (such that it is) is pretty much the last straw...at this point they're ruining the value of the call letters. Apart from No Name they have no one even remotely entertaining, and at some point they'll have to fess up and admit they're nothing more than a '90s flashback station...and that'll lose its remaining steam very, very soon...and don't even get me started on "ALT" 105...garbage...

    4. Hi Weiserguy - Rabbit from 10:11 post here. Thank for your kind clarification and explanation. Obviously I wasn't aware of SJ embedded market portion of the SF book. My philosophy always focused on client results and needs, not be dependent on ratings. Again, thank your kind reply.

Why shouldn't Ronn be at the Cumulus meeting?

  10. Just checked out 910 am, thought it was still a Spanish sports station or whatever. It is not great, but at least they did not bring back Gil Gross. However, the program director is the same I believe as it was, so I don't have great hope for something interesting. Don't care much for Stephanie Miller and her format, nothing to do with her politics. Thom Hartmann is on from 9 to noon. At least then there is more of a choice, instead of just Ethan Bearman, both who are boring, in different ways.

    1. Progressive talk back again..hope it stays awhile. Conservatives got 560 and 860 all day and night and a bit of KGO in the morning. I miss Green 960. They had an awesome lineup, from Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, Bill Press and Mike Malloy.

    2. I agree about progressive talk coming back to the Bay Area is a good thing. Don't care for Stephanie Miller that much. Mike Malloy I only listened to a little, he always sounded mean spirited, kind of a left version of Rush. Of those mentioned I think Bill Press is the best, then Thom Hartmann. However, 910 is copying 810, by repeating morning shows at night. Hopefully as times goes on they will add more variety. By the way Office Vic is back on 910 doing traffic. As long as they don't bring Gil Gross back. If Kgo don't hire John Rothmann on a full time basis, he would be a good fit for one of the night time slots.

  12. This show is now a hideous love fest among 3 no talent haters. I loved Lee Rodgers & Mel. When Sussman first got the morning show it seemed like he was trying. Now the entire staff there are never prepared, talk about their health & wealth like geriatric users & play the same trite interviews over & over even on the same day.Sussman comes to work rattled & unprepared.Katie is a vicious thug if you call to say anything at all she sounds like a pushy gang member & just makes fun of you.Her constant butt kissing Brian is so bad. I may listen about 10 minutes but now I can't even do that. No matter what time you put this show on, they are discussing how to do their show that day & where to look on the Drudge Report for something to discuss. After Sussman started putting his imbecile brother on & even his sister it really went down hill.I don't know why they think they are such a big deal anymore or maybe they know they will be cancelled soon & are just lying about their popular status.

  13. I agree that Savage can take smart and principled positions. I like it when he sticks to topics NOT related to his books. He got time with Trump but is NO flack for Trump. He has guts at his best. It's his nauseating self-worshiping segments pushing his books, reading from them, praising them, that drive me away. He comes off so pitifully insecure, it's that enormous ego of his. Now he is working like a third-rate barker to contort anything with the slightest relevance to his Stop Mass Hysteria book into gushing self-praise. HE is the hysterical one, and I'm driven away. Again, at his brilliant best, he is compelling.
