At its
Market Cluster building on
Battery this (Tuesday) morning,
Cumulus chief,
Mary Berner held a major meeting for all its SF employees --it wasn't that significant because nobody was shown the door nor were their any major announcements...
except one.

Mary Berner |
According to my cloud source inside the
Levi auditorium, Berner said, "
It is obvious that KGO isn't working." Those weren't the exact quotes but you get the gist.
We've heard this line before but it's real:
Changes (again) are coming to
KGO (and other Cumulus stations in the Bay Area but I'll deal with KGO for now)

Doug Harvill |
One reason why Berner hired
Doug Harvill as the latest market manager is that Harvill ran
KCBS and knows the
Bay Area and has an idea to make it right. One only hopes he will
DUMP the ludicrous current lifestyle format and get back to heavy-duty news talk and real information and opinion.
It sure beats tofu recipes.
Talk more on Wednesday as to what I believe Harvill has to do and do so soon.
Let me guess what your prescription will be — hire Rothmann and Thurmon for weekday shifts, fire Berman and Chip. Dump A&G. That’s it, right?
ReplyDeleteA few more ideas. Dr Drew is pretty good but his co-host interrupts him too much and tries to dominate the show. Fix that.
A little thing, but bring back ABC top of the hour news. They’re more comprehensive and have a better presentation than the CNN crap.
Start developing talk talent by giving promising prospects weekend gigs and moving them to weekdays when they’re ready.
Don’t revive bad hosts from the past like Christine Craft, Bernie Ward or Karel.
If you want great hosts from KGO’s glory days, how about Rosie or Dr Bill?
Have hosts talk more about local topics in the news. Everybody talks about Trump and I’ve got Trump fatigue. The old KGO would have been all over the SF mayors race, immigration raids, crazy tech guys like Musk and Dorsey. We have interesting topics right here in our back yard.
Bring the 49ers back to KGO.
Hire a live overnight host. When something happens at night like an earthquake or a devastating wildfire, listeners want to hear callers talking about it.
If they have to do infomercials, make them interesting. Do it live. Hire professional hosts with good voices. Use humor. Use music.
Once you’ve got things on track, add an FM frequency to draw in better ratings.
I would be happy with ANY talk format over the rambling nonsense going on now.
ReplyDelete7:04 P.M. I agree get rid of Bearman, Chip and A&G. I also agree don't bring back some of the other former hosts. Although of Christine Kraft would be okay, maybe for 2 hours. She is intelligent and well informed, and not totally left or right, mostly left, but somewhat unpredictable. Definitely Rothman and Thurston, separate shows. Instead of a talk format early morning, perhaps bring back morning news from 6 to 9 a.m. John Rothman from 9 to noon. Perhaps noon news, or Pat from noon to 3 p.m. Brian Copeland would be a big improvement over Chip Franklin. John Bachtelor (spelled wrong) is fine from 10 pm. on. If they want a syndicated host I would suggest Bill Press, he has ties to the Bay Area, knows politics and knows what is going on. He use to fill in for Ronn Owens, and I always like when he did and also like when Ronn interviewed him.
ReplyDeletei just want these people to listen ryan scott's pathetic suckup interview with some english lady about cookies..
ReplyDeleteWhen are all of you going to understand that there is NO money left to do any of this stuff.
ReplyDeleteNone...nada....zippo...
The stations have been gutted.
So how about coming up with great, quick and free money making ideas not involving the spending of any money.
Simple eh?
Tradio...24/7, major market tradio...it's coming!
DeleteThere is the old adage..If you want to make money you have to spend money. I am just afraid it is too late since they don't have any assets to borrow on in order to hire anyone worthwhile.....but we can dream.
