OK, My First Official Post Regarding SF Giants' Cable TV Field Reporter: Amy G Is Really Lousy

I'VE NEVER REALLY CARED FOR AMY G; Amy is the field reporter for cable broadcasts of the SF Giants. I didn't write about her except for some occasional Twitter posts lampooning her style of coverage and basically saying she was/is an embarrassment to the Giants' organization -- I could go farther and I will.

Amy Gutierrez is supposedly Larry Baer's (front man) "good luck charm"--this is in reference to the time from 2010 until 2014 when the Giants won 3 World Series titles and part of G's tenure with the team so Baer wanted her on the field as a reporter to essentially talk all things Giant and create a Giants' wonderland. Nothing wrong with that and Baer owns the team; hell he could put Gumby out there if he wants, only Gumby would be an upgrade to Amy G.

OK, let's make it official: Amy G is terrible. Awful, no. But terrible is good enough. More to the point, and this is huge, Amy G is more detested by women then men. How do I know? Trust me I do because I've heard through backroom chatter that she is loathed by women; I have my ideas why but I'll tell you a more bottom line why I cannot stand her.

She has zero reporting repertoire. She sounds like crap. She's more of a PR flack for the team's PTA contingent which would be fine only she's so pathetic on the air that I'm not sure, if I was a parent, I'd invite her to Parents night.

We're supposed to be in a big market. #4 for radio, #7 or 8 for TV. Amy G isn't a big market talent. She'd be more suitable for Akron but just barely. Giants' fans hold your nose and let me make an analogy: do the Dodgers have an Amy G? No, and if they did, an "Amy G-type" wouldn't be tolerated in a nanosecond --sure, you can scream "LA Sucks" but this is the home of Vin Scully and Chick Hearn, two pretty damn good broadcasters in their day (in Vinny's case, to the end) and so the idea of Amy G in Chavez Ravine would never happen to begin with; championship or not.

So the idea that muttering, annoying, pathetically irritating Amy G could have a presence on Giants' TV is mind-boggling, "good-luck-charm" or not. Larry Baer should be embarrassed but Larry's ego is as huge as Buster Posey's jersey sales so Larry really doesn't give a flying fuck. Larry is about image and money and somehow, Amy G fits into that business model so there!

And you wanna know something even more screwy? Hank Schulman, the Giants' beat reporter for the Chronicle doesn't write shit about Amy G. The Chronicle doesn't have a fulltime media reporter but still, Schulman, I know for a fact, detests Amy G but Hank doesn't want to screw with his green stamps at the Giants and thus, he's silent about Amy G. No surprise there.

Amy G might eventually fade away maybe in 2026 when the Giants become slightly lousy more regularly and Jon Miller and Mike Krukow make fun of her voice and call her a wimpity splitty, something like that, but until then enjoy your Amy G or hit your head on the wall.

  2. She stinks, but the bosses like her. See it all the time. Take care of the incompetent crony, and fuck the customer (or coworker, or taxpayer).

  3. She has to know someone to have gotten this job. Really annoying. And then there's Homer krukow, the only Giant announcer of all time I've disliked for solely his announcing.

  4. I think the problem is the job itself. These pretty sideline reporters never add anything to a broadcast that’s very useful, nothing the regular PBP guys couldn’t say themselves. It’s great when they’re really hot like the ones who do the NFL or NBA telecasts. But they don’t usually add any information that’s crucial. I think Amy’s job is to do promotional announcements for the Giants, sort of a live commercial. The real question is — is she hot enough?

She’s nice in a MILF way, but no Maria Medina.

As for hottest network sideline reporters, my menu includes

Erin Andrews —- great pictures of her online
    Tracy Wolfson
    Jamie Erdahl
    Niki Noro

    2. Tracy Wolfson???? What is hot about her??? She does her job well , but she's short, a brunette, and that witch mole near mourh needs to go.

  5. Rich, next time I see you at the ball park, I'm buying you a beer!!! You hit the nail on the head. She must have something on Larry Baer. Why else would he keep her? Mindy Bach would have been great doing the job. I guess the only thing we can hope for is she takes one in the head.

  6. There is a reason he is known as Lockstep Larry. Despite 3 straight seasons of falling short of a championship, Baer continues to be superstitious about keeping her, much to the chagrin of most Giants fan regardless of gender. How many of these fans at AT&T Park actually cringe when she shows up to talk to them? I'd like to know what veteran baseball voices like Bob Costas or prominent NBC reporting voices like Marin-born Lester Holt think of her reporting skills. Clearly she didn't learn from how Warrior sideline voice Kerith Burke efficiently interviews players and staff. I can't watch Kuip and Kruk during home games because she is that insufferable.

    2. To Larry Baer, sadly, that is the case. Image obsession gone amuck at the top.

  7. Her job isn't to report. It's to make the Giants organization look good.

  8. You can even do yourself one better: don't watch Giants baseball.

  9. "Amy G is terrible." - Rich, I agree 100%, I can't stand her...and btw, if her husband reads this post, I'd sure like to know what he was talking about when he wrote that new Raiders O-lineman Miller might need a “cultural adjustment period", simply because he's white and the other O-lineman are black.

Are you kidding me, this is the NFL, who cares if he's white and the other players are black?

  10. I'm a woman and I CANNOT stand Amy G. She talks like she's speaking to a room full of 2nd grade kids. She adds absolutely NOTHING to the Giants broadcasts and I really hope she goes away sooner rather than later. But she won't, they'll keep her around because they really believe that people like her when they are just being polite because everyone in this area is afraid to say what they really think for fear of being shamed or fired.

  14. Boy. Easy target huh? I think Amy G is quite likeable. Would you prefer a cold polished type like poor Erin Andrews (hurl). Sorry, I disagree. Baer may like her girl next door style. I have bigger issues with the Giants management.

  16. At the time of her hiring, a decade or so ago, Amy G was considered an upgrade over the previous 'Giants PR flack lady'...the legendary*coughterriblecough*...Cammy Blackstone. Unlike Cammy, Amy G actually interviews players and uses baseball terminology. Cammy was literally there to tell us what ice cream flavor or hot dog condiment was new this homstand, or what the delightful Lou Seal was up to.

    1. During an interview, Cammy got wantonly rude with a fan. I don't know if that incident was cause for dismissal, but she was gone soon after. Like Amy, Cammy is from Sonoma County.

    2. I guess I missed that interview, but I thought I remebered that she just disappeared during the season, and that was that.

  17. Dallas Braden is the A's field reporter and he's fantastic. Hey Rich you should check out Dave Kaval's twitter feed. He asked A's fans for their opinions on the A's "flagship station" and got a huge amount of negative feedback. Now Entercom is pushing the A's off on another crap signal, 1550AM.

    1. Braden is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, articulate, and unique. The man loves his job, his home, the game, people, and life! Great addition to the A's telecasts!

    2. I think it's good that 95.7 finally got an AM dial. Not sure how far it reaches, but at the very least, 1550 will be 95.7's version of KNBR 1050.... It will be interesting to see if they would be willing to move Raider games to 1550 when they conflict with A's games in August and September.

Regarding 95.7 as the A's flagship station, not to sound like a pompous Giants fan but, what do A's fans expect? The A's aren't going to get Warriors type coverage, or even Raiders type coverage. The A's just don't move the needle, and any extensive talk on the A's will kill their ratings.

Outside of A's pre-and post, and outside of Townsend and Rick Tittle, the A's are rarely talked about on 95.7 during regular show hours during the week. They talk more Giants than they do the A's on 95.7, which isn't a bad thing for us Giants fans. Yes, us Giants fans have KNBR to go to, but the Giants conversation on 95.7 doesn't get boring, and they bring in other topics into the conversation.

  18. It's sad that men hire these women thinking that eye candy without skills sells. Short term maybe. Long term. Never. Hate to talk bad about anyone but she is atrocious. She brings nothing of value to the broadcast. Larry is as much to blame on this one, believing in his sexist view that baseball fans value boobs over the ballgame.

  21. I don't know what you can really expect out of a field reporter for a regional baseball network. She doesn't have game access to the manager, coaches, or medical staff. She can't give updates or breaking news.

Her job is to hype the Giants, talk about upcoming promotion, and talk to fans. At that, she is fine. Not great, not funny, not cutting edge. She says everyone is having a good time or are excited about a promo and then throws it back to the booth.

The A's are doing something interesting where they have Dallas Braden as the 3rd announcer for home games, but he just isn't in the booth. He is usually behind home plate, but he also moves about the stadium. But, I just don't see the Giants doing anything like that.

And the A's still also have a hype woman interviewing fans and pumping up give-aways, like Amy G.

    1. You described it perfectly. That is pretty much what Amy G does. Nothing more, nothing less. Like I said in my post, she fits the Giants home TV broadcasts.

I agree with you on the Giants not doing what the A's are doing with Dallas Braden. The Giants TV broadcasts kind of doesn't lend commentary for a 3rd announcer. I don't know if I can picture Estes, Javier Lopez, Affeldt, Aurilia, Randy Winn, or even Tim Flannery doing that. They are all better as studio guys, even though yes, Affeldt and Lopez fill in for Krukow on road trips, and they're still coming into their own as announcers.

Plus, Kruk and Kuip are the stars of the Giants TV broadcast. Having a 3rd announcer would make things somewhat awkward, and it would almost be like having too many cooks in the kitchen, even though I think Kruk and Kuip would be willing to work with a 3rd announcer that they would be comfortable with.

The A's it's kind of a different deal because their TV ratings aren't as high locally as the Giants TV ratings, and Dallas Braden was a fan favorite. It could be kind of marketing ploy for the A's as well. Add someone to the TV broadcast who A's fans loved and can identity with, he's from Northern California, and he was on the team somewhat recently.... I'll admit he's an upgrade for them over Eric Chavez and Mark Mulder who were kind of boring and didn't add much to the A's TV broadcasts, even though they weren't in a 3rd announcer role. They were filling in for Fosse, even though I think he still called games on the radio when they filled in for him on TV.

      Delete
  22. So what? If ratings were poor or no one went to the games like over in Oakland it might become a marketing decision to can her. But her role is 'fan in the stands'. Nothing more except for a 30 second "How did it feel to get that hit?" interview following the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe there are new guys in the "truck" but when Amy is on we miss the action of the game. I don't think the truck understands the concept of split-screening. NEVER miss game action.

While I’m at it, who the hell hired Therese Vinal for that obnoxious GIANTS Insiders program.

  26. Amy is a 8/10 in San Fran.

  27. Like others have said on here, Amy G is what she is. She doesn't say anything overly critical of the Giants, and she focuses in on the crowd and how they are enjoying the game.

Yeah, she can get annoying, mainly because like has been mentioned, she talks to the audience like we're elementary schoolers, but if you really think about it, she fits the Giants broadcasts. She doesn't rock the boat, and she doesn't step on Kruk and Kuips toes.

I'll give her credit on one thing. She can golf. LOL. I don't know if some of you remember, but on one of the G-Mag episodes last year, she golfed with George Kontos when he was with the Giants. She held her own it looked like.
