Is Cumulus Screwing With Michael Savage? Savage Hints Indicate Something's Up; Contract Up Soon; 415 Media Monday Open

TWICE LAST WEEK Syndicated Radio Talker, the bombastic, popular, and controversial Michael Savage, stated on the air, "...in case I'm not here, you can always get me on my website, Facebook and Twitter."

Savage (heard locally on KSFO from Noon-3 PM) didn't go into detail as to why he was saying "in case I'm not here."

Could Cumulus be screwing with him? More to the point, could Savage be their latest cost-cutting victim?

It happened to Don Imus in NY; it also effectively ended Ronn Owens run in the Bay Area after 42 years; there's more cost-cutting on the way.

Why?

Cumulus is in the midst of a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceeding and is letting go of high-priced air talent; those who make over six-figures are supposedly high on the hit list.

It would be a drastic move by Cumulus to let go of Savage; his ratings are fairly strong here in the Bay Area and most dominant in the New York market on WABC where he's consistently #1 in the Afternoon drive sport (3-6 PM)

Savage offered a terse "no comment" when I asked him, via phone, about his comments. He did indicate that his numbers are consistently high, especially his streaming numbers.

Nothing is official and Savage might have thrown out a message to Cumulus execs as to clarify his future reading the tea leaves. I don't think there's imminent change ahead but with Cumulus and its financial situation up in the air and having to shed salaries, who knows.

Oh, Savage's contract is up before the end of the year. Might this be the opening round of negotiations; after all, Cumulus will have a sufficient amount of operating cash after its BK is settle; although that's still being litigated by a judge who might not care about broadcast ratings.

Time will tell.

  1. Still not a Savage fan, especially when he supports the Hairpiece-in-Chief, but if he can expose all of Cumulus' warts and namedrop the Tricky Dickeys, then that might help the radio landscape some.

    1. Look, a broken record! Seeing a broken record is rare these days what with digital recordings and Stan being off the air here.

  3. Savage is simply horrible, his act got old 10 years ago, always the same right-wing BS, and kissing Trump's ass won't help his ratings around here.

    2. Savage if hes interested can take a stiff paycut as most of his renue comes from selling his books... Oh and his son is a billionaire.

  5. I'm not a Savage fan by any stretch. However, I want to be fair, although Savage is a strong supporter of Trump, he has also been very critical of Trump on several issues. He was not crazy about the tax cut, mostly because it adds to the National debt, he was very upset about Trump lifting the ban on importing ivory, Savage is a huge animal lover (on this issue I agree with him, and enjoy his shows), he spend 3 hours railing against Trump's decision. Most recently Savage has been upset about the appointment of John Bolton as security advisor, thinks he is a war monger, and many, including me, agree with Savage on that. To 8:09 4:18, it sounds like you are think Savage is the same as Hannity and Limbaugh, not so, Savage is very independent, and will speak his mind, even if it means not being supportive of Trump. Having said this, Savage still supports Trump, and is glad Hillary is not President. Also having defended Savage I have to disclose, I don't listen that much to Savage, and when he starts his anti immigrant rants, and blaming the liberal for everything (liberalism is a mental disorder) I cannot stand Savage and turn the dial.

  6. the creature on top of Mr. Trump's head is not a hairpiece.watch when the wind hits it and you'll will observe the world's wackiest comb over, dyed comb over flapping up and revealing the bald central pate.

  7. They won’t renew his contract. They have had a hard time selling spots on his show. Ratings skew too old. Advertisers don’t like being targeted for boycotts. Savage will do well online or via satellite, but his terrestrial radio days are numbered.

    1. I wrote the blog at 12:24 am. It might sound like I'm a Savage fan, which I'm not and I do state that in my blog. More often than not, I turn to get his take on issues of the day, but often turn the dial. I'm not a conservative, kind of middle of the road liberal, with some liberation leanings. Although not a Savage fan, no one can deny that the man is very intelligent, and he is independent, he does not follow republican talking point, unlike Hannity and Rush. There are not many liberal talk show hosts anymore, I commute in the middle of the day, my choices are Michael Medved and Tom Sullivan, both whom I like although I often do not agree with them. However, I think Savage's take on the Syria situation and John Bolton is spot on, thus I like to listen. Tom Sullivan was leaning a little the same way, Michael Medved not at all. I just happen to agree with Savage on this point, does not mean I'm a fan, and that he does not infuriate me when he talks about other issues.

  9. He will always have the last laugh, why? His enshrinement into the Radio Hall of Fame! Trump didn't beat Hillary, Savage did! Trump travelled the road Savage designed and paved, all the way to the White House.

  10. If Savage is "No. 1" on WABC I don't know what demo that is. The station itself is 23rd in 2+ and was recently beaten by a talk station in Trenton, NJ....As for Savage's contract being "up before the end of the year," since Cumulus is in bankruptcy court it's all over now if they want it to be, a la Imus....Savage hasn't been on WABC from "3-6 PM" for several years. Because, IMO, he has "phoned in" the third hour since he started in that time slot, many stations, including WABC, carry only the first two hours.
