Steve Aveson OUT at KRON
Steve Aveson is OUT at KRON, a source tells 415 Media.

Aveson, the weeknight co-anchor who came to KRON in April, 2016, contract is up at the end of the month and won't be renewed.

Why?

Station brass did research and Aveson never warmed to the Bay Area audience and they never warmed to him. In fact, said the source, he wasn't even known. Ouch.

How shocking.

I'm being flip. Frankly, I'm surprised Aveson made it this long because his personality was not exactly peachy; furthermore, not helping matters, he was not especially liked by a majority of his co-workers. Especially one bigwig.

There's this thing called chemistry and Aveson never developed any; not only to the people who still watch KRON but many inside the newsroom. Shockingly, but not surprising, KRON tried to build its news brand around Aveson and it turned out to be a disaster.

There's no word on a replacement but anyone other than Aveson will be an improvement. Harsh? Yes, but true too.

It's a tough business.

  1. Caught a 8PM newscast a couple months ago with Aveson and Pam Moore. Aveson was so bad that Moore was following HIS prompter so she could start as soon as he stopped talking, in a couple of cases talking over his last word or two. It was almost like Aveson was reading English for the first time it was so bad. Amazing for someone with his resume to be sooo bad. Having said that, that newsroom environment must be hugely toxic for newcomers...

    1. I don't think it's like he' reading English for the first time; more like every story to him is the death of a president: all the pregnant pauses and dramatic slowing down at the end of a line, prompting Pam to cut in to get things moving. (I can imagine the producer screaming in her ear "We're heavy, speed it up.") And all this drama to introduce something as ordinary as a People Behaving Badly segment!

  2. Yeah but we're still stuck with Wonder Bra in the AM and Fatnich in the PM.

    1. Fatnich, how clever. Did you make that up all on your own? Surely he could learn a thing or two by looking at your svelte cisgender figure.

    2. Yeah, but you gotta give him points for Wonder Bra. Or maybe Pero Pounder? ;-)

    3. Hey 1003, how’s that Big Mac and super size fries diet working out for you? It’s affected your brain for sure.

    5. You mean like you 950? Thought we should follow a numbskull like you.

  3. To "be known" your station needs to "be watched". KRON is the new Musak...always on in the background, never actually watched.

    1. That is TRUE! Ha! Nobody watches KRON, let alone local TV news...well, except Rich and those over 65. I would be curious to know how many people tune in to its 8pm newscast or how many people watch from say, 6-7am. What are the hard numbers? What is the reason to watch? Most of what they do is already known, unless it is a live breaking news event. I watch People Behaving Badly on YouTube, which is crazy because it is not the station's website and they don't get any money off it...it's Stanley's personal YouTube page. What a joke.

  4. Can't say I'll miss him. He had the personality of wallpaper paste, and he delivered every story as though he were Cronkite announcing the death of President Kennedy. And it was clear Pam didn't like him. She'd sometimes cut him off in the two-anchors leads, fed up with his ponderous pauses. Even KRON can do better than this guy, who's suitable for Fresno, maybe. Yo, Steve, lighten up!

    2. He and Ashley must have gone to the same school. Same sort of dull delivery.

  5. I found him completely plastic in his delivery. Even shifting over to the weather person de jour was hard for him.

  6. he seemed like a total douche!

  7. He never learned rule #1 at KRON: if you sleep with the boss, you can do whatever you want INCLUDING be disliked by audience and coworkers

  8. Just speculating, but what if they let him walk to save money? Let Pam do the news solo and save $150,000 or whatever he cost?

As for hard audience numbers, I looked about a year ago and they had about 5,000 total HH in any 15-minute period of their prime time news. About a third of that was in the demo. So if KRON disappeared tomorrow, nobody would care.

  9. There's no telling what could be next for Aveson. I know he used to work in Providence for CBS affiliate WPRI, also owned and operated by Nexstar, same owner as KRON. Not sure whether WPRI would want him back, or whether Sinclair's WJAR or Citadel's WLNE could be sniffing around him. I also remember him being a correspondent for ABC News in the late 90s, and co-host of short-lived incarnation of GMA Sunday, though not related to current GMA Weekend. Before ABC, I remember he worked in Atlanta (my home market) at TEGNA's WXIA as co-host of Noonday. Not sure whether he'd want to come back to Atlanta either, although I could see Meredith's WGCL showing interest in him for evening anchor position to be paired with Sharon Reed, unless WGCL has another name or 2 in mind to replace Ben Swann. Not sure about Fox's WAGA and WXIA. Cox's WSB would be unlikely.

  10. He's just a regular white guy doing his thing. Maybe he doesn't have the cachet of being a politically correct and trendy female, minority, LGBT, etc. Sometimes white bread is delicious.

    1. So true. I turn on some channels and the pandering is so in your face that its comical. And then they wonder why their ratings are in the toilet.

    2. He is a "minority." Hispanic is now the majority in CA. They are also the majority in the CA public school system and they are doing great. One in four are proficient in math and one in three are proficient in English.

The CA public school system is now rated nation wide at #40. Years ago the system was #1, best public school system in the country...wonder what happened?

I'm surprised Governor Brown didn't mention that fact when Trump was here, he could have used that information to further explain what a "prosperous" state CA is has become!

The "Golden State" is long gone, we are now an outpost for the Third World and with Governor Brown, the Mayor of Oakland and soon to be elected Newsom, it will continue!!

  11. Upper management realized that he just didn't have it. Next up is Big D in the am. Her dog and pony show is old. I don't care who she is sleeping with, enough is enough. She just plain sucks.

  13. I miss Steve very much, and will stop to watch Kron 4 soon.

  14. I was okay Steve but my wife didn't care for him. Ken Wayne is good so I will continue watching kron 4.

  15. My wife and I watch religiously simply because of how bad it is, and considering the turnover they've had over the 4 years I've lived here, it would appear actually working for KRON4 is as bad as their product.

The one thing Aveson did that drove me nuts was when he dramatically swung his head to the left to look at Pam at the end of his paragraph.

  16. Kron 4 hasn't been the seem since it lost its NBC affiliation several years ago. I watch Kron 4 News in the morning for 5 minutes and turnout. They will repeat the same ole story every 5 minutes. Never updating news or additional new. It is like watching a News info commercial. How does Kron 4 survive financially I did not know.
