I MENTIONED on Thursday on how bad Bay Area sports-talk radio is to the point I can't listen anymore; the same goes for KRON and its terrible newscasts and obnoxious Steve Aveson.
Avesom is not only uninteresting and boring, he's tedious too. And he seems to anchor in a monotone mode better suited for mutants. It's really simply unwatchable. More ominous for KRON, he's supposedly a pain to deal with off-camera there at the newsroom.
SPEAKING of ANCHORS that I simply find hard to watch anymore...
*Brian Hackney of KPIX --a Bay Area news veteran. I go hot and cold with Hackney --there's times he's fine and dandy and reads his copy --nothing too extra ordinary or special but then there's him coming off as smug and smarmy and giving the appearance that "I'm better than you." Look, Hackney should know better; if he really wanted to be a scientist he should have applied to teach at Berkeley. In the meantime, yo Brian, lighten up, this isn't Geneva. Order a double next time.
*Dion Lim of KGO-TV: Again, I keep trying and trying to see if she's improved and she's still got that annoying voice and horrid, artificial look. It's as if she's doesn't know the room. And she continues the fake, insincere laughs and guffaws during tosses between weather and sports. She ought to just smile and move forward and not try to pretend with the fake emotions. They come off as disingenuous and placid and viewers tend to see through it all. Lim needs a hitting coach badly. There's no doubt she's bright and attractive and reads the teleprompter well but her personal tendencies have to be tweaked and updated. It would not only benefit Lim but KGO too which is more important.
*Eric Thomas seems to have graduated out of the perpetual pissed-off look but his serious demeanor when he's reading the news continues to disturb me and wonder if Thomas realizes his personality (or lack of one) makes him hard to watch. Thomas has been at KGO for a very long tenure and had to deal with some bad people and incompetent managers --he's earned his stripes but he frequently looks like he's about to have a root canal procedure and the viewers are in the waiting room sitting next to him. Lighten up, Eric!
*Heather Holmes ...KTVU's party gal moonlighting as a news anchor. Holmes, I've frequently said here, I don't get. In fact, I have studied hard and tried to discover her appeal. She's competent, she's certainly capable but other than that, she's rather ordinary and benign. I mean, she looks and sounds like nothing special but I'll give her this; she does have a legion of fans that love her and think she's the second coming. First off, speaking of looks, she has to ditch the diva outfits and put a little more weight on; there's times when she looks like she just got out of a SF nightclub. Maybe she needs a little more buffet and less salad trays too.
*Michelle Griego of KPIX: Oh my god, between her and Mr. Choi it's like a deserted wasteland on morning TV. Griego has ZERO TV presence --there's absolutely no chemistry between her and her partner and she comes off as insincere and phony. She might as well be a wind-up doll and sputter out sweet nothings because there's really no there there, a distinct lack of realness perpetuated with eternal melba toast personality.
Couldn't agree more about D. Lim.....Can't stand her voice, mannerisms, fake emotions & inane comments following the sports segment which she knows nothing about.....I just have to switch to Channel 5 when she's on....What will transpire when Ama Daetz returns?
ReplyDeletewhen is Ama returning from mommy leave -- it seems like she's been gone forever or is that just because we've had to endure the insufferable Ms. Lim. I wish KGO could just get her to stop the fake laughing etc that others here have complained about. And while they are in the "fix it" mode --- PLEASE do something about the sound problems that come up on almost every sports cast.
DeleteKeep Hackney away from the booze. He's obnoxious enough when he's sober.
ReplyDeleteI just can't resist that flirty nerdy one after a few pops.
DeleteHackney has a very sophisticated sense of humor, understated and intellectual with a hint of sarcasm, which some people might mistake for arrogance. I enjoy his appearances to do the weather and occasional anchoring. He is more than qualified and accurate, but above all he is trustworthy in my opinion which gives him remarkable credibility in the industry.
DeleteThank you, 7:11. That ridiculous aggrandizement of Hackney's traits provided a really good laugh!
DeleteI cannot get past Hackney's hair. Just cannot.
DeleteDave Clark. Worst bay anchor. Dumber than dirt. Annoying as f. Pam Cook looks to have aged two decades since his arrival.
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching KTVU in the morning the first day Dave Clark was on the job. I thought he smacked of L.A. TV news and sure enough, I looked him up and he came from KCAL or one of those psuedo network affiliates down there.
DeleteHow long has it been? Ten years? I still can't watch KTVU in the morning because of him.
Now with Lim nearly unavoidable on KGO, KPIX is my only option for news. KNTV is a non-starter with their crew. Their "chief meteorologist" Jeff Ranieri is an annoying hyperbolic weasel, and an arrogant one at that. At least somebody there finally put the kibosh on his ridiculously confusing BINGO card forecast graphic and went back to providing a map.
Beyond me why KTVU management keeps Dave Clark. People there have been fired for less. He's gotta have relatives working at the station or have some very close personal friends in management.
DeleteThey must like the way it appears that he's reading the news to a blank wall. No contact with the viewer whatsoever, and definitely no interaction with his co-anchor, other than an occasional "Yeah" or "Uh-huh!"
DeleteFrank Mallicoat was a definite improvement.
Speaking for audio experience, reduce the compression ratio on Dion's mic. She comes off as loud with no vocal dynamics and bassy (adjust eq so she sounds more feminine). Just some sound thought.
ReplyDeleteAgree on Kim. Annoying. But Eric Thomas is a hoot. He did not need a partner and he seems Like someone fun to hang out with. As for HH...yeah, she needs a sandwich, or two, but she's definitely easy to watch
ReplyDeleteNew weather gal at KPIX- Neda Iranpour, reminds me of Roberta Gonzales with her perky personality. Mix in late actress Brittany Murphy ( Sin City) voice and looks. She's relief to KPIX's moribund newscasts.
ReplyDeleteWe will see how it goes....
Neda is the sexiest meteorologist since Sandhya Patel.
DeleteAnd that's saying something!
Too bad she is inaccurate as hell. Has no clue about weather in the south bay. Last 2 storms she predicted light rain. Wrong! Many more times than that.
DeleteI just keep waiting for Michelle to plunge the knife in old Kenny's back
ReplyDeleteMichelle is an idiot. She and Ann Makovec totally screwed up the killings at UPS last year. Makovec actually said, "CNN is now reporting......" Really??
DeleteThis did happen in SF, right? You can drive from KPIX
to UPS via freeway (at midday) in 15 minutes, right?
Why do we need CNN? Michelle further bungled the broadcast by not knowing that the black man leading the
press conference was the SF Chief of Police. Morons.
It was nice to see some energy on KTVU early am this week. Frank Mallicoat did a nice job and brought some life to the show.
ReplyDeleteDave puts me to sleep.
Heather is hot. Rich, you have cataracts bro!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, she uses her sexuality to manipulate the male viewers, but men are really dumb that way. As Rich says, sometimes she looks like she just arrived from cocktails at the club. Dresses way to provocatively to be taken seriously professionally, and has, in fact, reported false information to viewers for who knows what reason. Makes you wonder why she's there, to snag a guy, or anchor the news.
DeleteGood for Darya to get the sports gorilla off her back in the morning. But my advice for her right now? Just say no to the Bo.
ReplyDeleteI say no more.
Heather needs credit. She's lasted years in the bay area where woman who ooze Mother Earth usually thrive. Heather oozes Luis Vitton. Right? Name another like her!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing Heather is oozing with her cocktail outfits is Texas trash
DeleteHeather got that oozing thing under control at the Free Clinic.
DeleteAveson, his eyes look like two piss holes in the snow. How 'bout some shoulder pads there?
ReplyDeleteBrian Hackman reminds me of the MASH character Major Charles Emerson Winchester. A bit of a snoot.
ReplyDeletePlain and simple: sports talk radio is wasted electricity, energy and time. They say nothing. If it's bad here, how is it across the country? You want good sports talk, listen to the stations on Sirius XM. There's good talk on the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA networks. It doesn't sound stupid like Rudy Rudy Poohay and Jimmie JJ Walker on KNBR. DY-NO-MITE!
Eric Thomas is the perpetual "Angry Black Man" I think you were trying to say but you want to be PC.
ReplyDeleteAdd Reggie Aqui and Exaggerating Zouves to the list, don't tknow how can a station sign these two folks.
ReplyDeleteI watched Dion tonight and she did a fantastic job. I certainly don't agree with all the criticism. She's a keeper
ReplyDeleteI saw Dion Lim a few days ago with Dan Ashley, and she seems to have toned it down quite a bit. I maintain my "Terilyn Joe 2.0" opinion, but it seems she's at least trying to crawl out of the egg mess...
ReplyDeleteAlso, Heather Holmes seems to have dumped the perpetual "see my legs?!?" persona and she's coming off somewhat professional now...probably took one look at the morning show and decided to turn the volume down a bit...
Dion Lim singlehandedly turned us off KGO news. At the beginning, during the fires we thought through her smiling and giggling while delivering devastating news that she was displaying some kind of sick glee at others misfortune. We were probably giving her too much credit. It appears she reads all the news in her girly singsong voice utterly oblivious to the content. Is her contract up yet?
ReplyDeleteDion Lim has singlehandedly turned us off KGO news. At first during the fires we thought she was displaying some form of sick glee at others misfortune as she smiled and giggled her way through devastating news stories. I think we were giving her too much credit. She reads all her news stories in the same silly sing-song news voice with absolutely no thought or connection to the content. I understand TV news is an outdated form of journalism and is very likely short-lived in our new world of media and journalism, but I have to think there is a frustrated actor out there somewhere that could at least pretend to be slightly bright, educated and interested.
