This much publicized incident was the final straw for KNTV, where Joe was last seen on Bay Area TV News. Officially, NBC wouldn't say the "egg-throwing" incident wasn't the reason but it sure didn't help.
I actually liked her work and thought she could hold her own but, according to a local media observer, "her ego and judgement" got in the way of her work and she paid the ultimate price."
*This is something that drives me absolutely crazy. Is there a law that EVERY TV Newscast has to have both a man and a woman? Would the world collapse if, say, you had a two guys anchoring or, god forbid, two women on the desk? It's so idiotic and out of date. As if by having both a man and a woman makes the newscast more gender friendly and PC. Yet most viewers are not that stupid and consider this illogical and patronizing act a pure farce. Hey, I'd love to see, just for example, Dan Ashley and Larry Beil do a newscast together. It would be a solid program and it would move along just nicely and I don't care that there's no woman on the set (other than, maybe, the weather) Conversely, I'd have no issues watching Pam Moore and Catherine Heenan; what a combo and much more compelling than the boring Steve Aveson who thinks he's Walter Cronkite.
*Uh, potentially, the beginning of a TV "Bridge over Troubled Waters": Gary Radnich and the management team (other than the ND) at KRON.
*Here's an opinion from someone who was not only in radio for over four decades but sold radio too: "Rothmann (John) is beloved by the 'Volvo crowd'". Yeah, and the last time I checked people still BUY Volvos --along with mattresses and clothes and vacations too. People who ostensibly would listen to Rothmann might be inclined to patronize those potential advertisers, a thought apparently LOST in SPACE by the dummies who run KGO/Cumulus here in the city. When the biggest suit hires morons like John Lund you understand why Rothmann is considered "too smart" for KGO's remaining ten listeners.
*"It's dreadful" --a KTVU longtimer who says going to work at the station is no fun and under conditions more apt for a university library. Staffer: "Nobody smiles anymore; everyone is freaked out about the cameras. This used to be a fun place to work; now, everyone's on edge."
The situation at Channel 2 (Fox2) would warrant, under normal circumstances, a meeting with EVERYONE who works inside the building but the current GM rarely spends time at the station preferring a toxic atmosphere and usually out of the office by 3 o'clock. Way to run a operation. No wonder Boston Fox was elated when Gregg Kelley was shipped out to the Bay Area.
*Correction: Kevin Frandsen will apparently still be on KNBR's airwaves as his new Philly gig is only selected games. So, unique, obnoxious, and uninteresting human waste, part of what Cosell referred to as the "Jockocracy" have a home at the Sports Bleeder. Frandsen makes Paulie Mac look like Dave Ross.
*Local TV has followed in abundance CNN's horrid and irresponsible "Breaking News" alert when there's really NO breaking news thereby delegitimizing legitimate "BREAKING NEWS" --again, what a disgrace to TV Journalism everywhere.

I watched KRON for the first time in a long time last night and what a fiasco. The number of technical mistakes...well, the old KRON (or any old station outside of a community college's closed circuit student broadcasts made for TV Production 101) didn't make that many goofs in a week. The scripts often rambled and were literally nonsensical. The reporter Ella Sogomonian seems more confused than Donald Trump trying to understand international trade. Sometimes it seemed like the anchors were just ad libbing, because what was on the prompter didn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteHow does Pero keep his job?!? Like I said, a community college practice newscast is executed better. And I know they have some talented people there too (along with lots of dead wood, of course), so it must be frustrating for them. What a joke of a station.
True that...I always thought anchors wrote their own teleprompter copy...that would explain why pretty much every KRON anchor (even Pam Moore, who should know better) trips up at least once on every story as if they need to finish an incomplete thought on the fly...maybe Pero stays because some people may think that all this flubbing is in itself entertainment...Idiocracy, indeed...
DeleteListening to Frandsen and Lund during Tolbert’s abscence was painful. Like two high school girls talking about makeup.
DeleteFrandson, though not a polished radio guy, isn't bad for an ex-player. Better than FP Santangelo,Vida,Jeremy Newberry and Romanowski to name a few.
ReplyDeleteThey must heard something good that lead to the Phillies gig.
Jeremy Newberry is honest, not a hometown rooter. I like him. Frandsen is unbearable and unpolished.
DeleteRaddy ran a KNBR tape on KRON Sports of a Warrior practice yesterday. You could see Pauly and Macky standing there watching the players while shooting the shit with unknowns on the sidelines. Radnich never mentioned them.
ReplyDeleteEh,just a tidbit to toss in.
He doesn't care about anyone else, this is not news nor is he.
ReplyDeletePerfectly stated re the inane idea that a guy like Rothmann should never be on air because he only appeals to a small segment of 'Volvo types'. What complete utter nonsence. When Gene, Bernie, Ray were ruling the waves Rothmann was a nice pinch hitter. The point is they were all intelligent, well spoken hosts. How it came to the current state where morons on air and off are the rule and a guy like Rothmann is the exception, well, this decade has been has seen the fulfillment of the 'decline of western civilization'!
ReplyDeleteTerilyn was worth keeping around just for the helmet hair and shoulder pads
ReplyDeleteNever liked her on the air; especially after 9/11 any reports of terrorist activity seemed to include the dramatic line "conspiring to kill AMERICANS!!"...always trying to add shock value to already pretty-shocking information. Not to mention that Vader helmet she called hair...
DeleteBut my biggest gripe: When she went to KNTV she bumped Susan Siravo completely off the air and I believe out of a job. I always thought Siravo was very competent, professional and engaging, and being insanely hot didn't hurt. IIRC, that was around the time KNTV became NBC11 and they brought TJ in because they thought she was big-time compared to Siravo...
The infamous Tarilyn Joe. Good looking woman with a good skill set. Her character traits? Not so good.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to read about her later on lawsuits and legal stuff excluding the egg throwing incident after she left the anchor desk. She was a great anchor except her career at KGO did not last forever where she later went to KNTV 11. I never knew about her new job on KNTV until I got Channel 3 (NBC 11) one day since KNTV took NBC away from KRON.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the one-man, one-woman "rule" would fall by the wayside, years ago, when ABC put Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts at the anchor desk on Good Morning, America." But, no.
ReplyDeleteNow that Matt Lauer has been "Me tooed," off of NBC's Today, they have to women anchors. Maybe this time.

Re "BREAKING NEWS!!!!": KGO, it shouldn't apply to an overnight house fire, which was successfully doused 4 hours before air time.
I could swear I've seen both an Ashley/Beil pairing and a Moore/Heenan pairing within the past year or so...but it was only once for each and it does rarely happen...
ReplyDeleteYeah, Ashley and Beil co-anchored a KOFY 9 o'clock newscast a few months back.
DeleteTotally agree re: the epidemic of BREAKING NEWS!" screeches appearing again.
ReplyDeleteYou seemed to put a stop to the practice several years ago. Might be time to take these news directors to task again? I mean, you can break news once: But when the same breaking news appears through the next 4 hours, that's abusing the usage. I can see them saying "developing news" but I suppose that doesn't grab eyes and ears.
Can you spank them again?
