Cumulus Gets Closer to BK; Expect the Purge at KNBR, KFOG; New Philly PD at 95.7 FM; Radio Daze Thursday

Image result for morning in san francisco THOSE CHANGES YOU HEAR on the various Cumulus radio stations here --some quite noticeable--are the beginning of a serious purge. Cumulus has been on a financial tight rope; now the grim reaper has arrived.

Of course there's going to be massive cuts and belt-tightening --all in the name of "being lean." Of course the guys in management will still get their hefty checks and bonuses. Only the little people pay for the gross mismanagement of others.

The interns and Uber drivers will get more airtime because cheap versus expensive is the operative thinking at the Cloud company.

Damon Bruce has a new PD at The Game
*MORE RADIO: It looks like 95.7 The Game has a new Program Director named Matt Nahigian, who had spent a large part of his career in Philadelphia.  I hope he's prepared for some Bay Area "sticker shock" because I'm guessing the honchos at Entercom are paying him as little as possible considering the debt load they all have.

I'm told by a close friend in Philadelphia that Nahigian actually has a clue what he's doing, and that his station sounded a lot better than the competition, which coincidentally was a CBS flagship.  Except he couldn't overcome this guy Angelo Cataldi in the mornings who has been there since God and is the legacy of WIP.  He may have the same problems in the Bay Area but luckily KNBR gets worse every day.

Hopefully he can offer the Bay Area something different than BOTH stations are giving us because they're BOTH average on a good day. Lee Hammer doesn't know what he's doing now that the Giants and Niners are terrible.  Not that he ever did.

My guess is this guy can't be worse than the guy Damon Bruce called "The Canadian" and definitely can't be worse than Jason Barrett.

  1. Brian Copeland...the KGO version of Tyrese Gibson. “I need money”, “Hire my children”, “Employ me forever”...blah blah blah...

If you reduce the power to the transmitters you can save X dollars...

Are they at the single ply toilet paper phase yet?

  3. KNBR will always have higher numbers simply based on signal strength and legacy. Both stations are really only listenable between 3pm-7pm, although John Lund is doing all he can to fix that. The only numbers that really matter are morning/afternoon drive. If KNBR wanted to really fire a fatal blow to 95.7, they'd hire Damon for mornings. Either way, news isn't great for either station with sports podcasts exploding over the last year.

    1. That would be cool if KNBR could bring Damon back. They never should've let him leave in the first place. The only thing is, would he want to do mornings? He's not much of a morning person as he's mentioned and alluted to before on air, even though I'm sure for the right price, he would be. LOL.... He seems pretty happy, at least at the moment, doing afternoon drive on 95.7. He has a great rapport with Gianna, the lady who does the sports updates for his show.

Also, even though they can get annoying, Murph and Mac have a huge following, and if KNBR let them go, it would be major news here locally. I wouldn't mind it, but you know a lot of people would trip off of replacing Murph and Mac with Damon Bruce.

But yes, even though Damon is great on 95.7, it would be nice if KNBR brought him back. In my opinion, KNBR wasn't the same after Damon left. That kind of started the deterioration of that station.

    2. Does not help when Damon had his rant on his low opinion of women in sports, plus he has became redundant and whinny. I just like morning show on the Game, afternoon drive is pretty bad on both sides of the stations.

  4. I can't believe Lee Hammer still has a job. Not only are the shows bad but they don't even have any new voices who are good. The Drew and Kevin show is bad and the Ryan guy who comes after them is worse.

    1. Have you noticed that Kevin is NEVER wrong?

    2. I listened a few times. Couldn't tolerate it. I don't even listen to sports radio anymore except by accident. Mostly Joe Rogan's podcast but that's getting boring too. Don't pay for Howard anymore. Bay Area radio is so crappy and predictable and vanilla. It used to be unbelievable. Shame.

    3. I agree. I tried to give them a shot and at first it was ok, but both shows aren't all that good now; the Hoffar and Frandsen show and KNBR Tonight with Ryan Covay. They do too many inside late night radio jokes, and it kind of becomes amateur hour radio.

KNBR ran out of ideas for what to do at night as far as local programming goes. CBS Sports Radio sucks, so I guess I can see why they are trying to extend local programming on weeknights.

It's really too bad they didn't give a late night show on weeknights/Giants postgame during baseball season, to a guy like Bonta Hill back when he was on KNBR. He has a good thing right now co-hosting with Greg Papa on 95.7, but Bonta Hill is better than Drew Hoffar, Ryan Covay, and Kevin Frandsen, and he has a real radio voice, even though at times he can sound congested.

  5. I like the morning show of the Game, afternoon drive not so much with either Tolbert and Lund are childish and Bruce is redundant.

  6. On Jason Barretts internet stop,he said Lee Hammer had been demoted as PD..and given some made up job. Cronyism has been Hammers qualification year after year.

  7. its matt steinmentz and michael urban who are both on every day now that really make everything terrible.. a couple of boring, tired pompus middle aged white guys who are in love with the sound of their own voice

    1. haha. You do have a point there. Plus, Matt Steinmetz almost always has to nit pick as he says it, about the Warriors. Yeah, they had their problems the first week or two of this season, but they look like they could be back on track now. In a way though, I wonder if part of Steinmetz almost always trying to point out something negative regarding the Warriors has to do with when he covered the Warriors on a daily basis back when they were bad. Yeah, that was a different time and different ownership group, but maybe that has kept Steinmetz somewhat jaded towards the Warriors in a way, even though the Warriors are a championship contender now and not in the doldrums of the NBA anymore.

Regarding Mychael Urban, sometimes when you hear him talk, you almost want to clear your throat. LOL. Sometimes his voice gets raspy and it goes out easily. Also, he always points out how he had a drinking problem. Yes, you feel sympathy for him in that, but at the same time, is it really necessary for him to always point that out? Yes, it's good that he got the help he needed to get through it, but still, TMI.

With that being said, I think Mychael Urban was better back in his KNBR days when he just did baseball and did the Giants weekend pre and postgame shows (around 2007-2009) before Marty Lurie arrived at KNBR. When Marty Lurie basically did the same thing when he came to KNBR in 2010, it kind of made Mychael Urban expendable on KNBR. Then Urban went to CSN Bay Area after that. But yes, Mychael Urban was better back then.

  8. Knbr has a know nothing fool named Jerry Crowe as "PD" now.
All his moves have been laughably horrid- Frandsen, Hoffar, Covay, Lund. This group is as amateur, dimwitted, and grating as some hapless junior college station out of Chico.

  9. NO DEPTH RADIO! THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE NOW!!! NO DEPTH RADIO!!!
INCH DEEP RADIO! SPORTS, TALK, EVERYTHING. IT IS ALL SHIT.

  10. Chris Townshend (aka "Townie") is over-exposed on 95.7. He handles post game for baseball, basketball, and football, and his schtick is tired. I'd rather hear Steinmetz solo after Dubs games and Rick Tittle after Raider games. And, 95.7 can never be taken seriously as a sports station if they continue to program those gawdawful gambling shows on Saturday mornings. Two bozos who sound like Vinnie Boombots touting their betting acumen? It's the lowest form of radio. Just awful.

    1. Townsend is good at what he does, but at the same time, you're right. He might be overexposed. I think I would just have him do A's postgame since he has a stronger connection to the A's than he does the Warriors or the Raiders, and he's more of a baseball guy.

    2. At least it's sports. Knbr does the same stuff and the PD has no say.

  11. What's left to "purge" at KFOG? they fired all the expensive veterans last year, replaced them with people clearly working for peanuts, plus a lot of voice-tracking and jockless hours. And Pinfield is now gone too.
