THE OTHER MORNING on KRON was a very awkward, bizarre, unintentionally funny and frankly disturbing encounter during the horrific "World According to Gary" segment between Countess Darya Folsom, who manages to embarrass herself daily and ancient has-been, Gary Radnich, hanging on so he can pay for his massive overhead.
Folsom introduced the subject of Serena Williams having a baby and she choked up. She explained to Gary that her daughter was headed off to college, teared up and pulled out a tissue box.
Radnich sounded perplexed and you could tell he thought Darya was doing schtick. Which even if she wasn't, has set herself up for not being trusted...even by Radnich who thinks so highly of the bit he does it in his bed.
I'm told Radnich had a hissy fit later with KRON execs (notably, ND, Aaron Pero) and wasn't amused by Darya's histrionics --(it helps Folsom that she lives with Pero).
This would be a really bigger deal but two things stand out: One, Darya's act is getting real old and 2., Radnich's influence at KRON has diminished greatly.
*Dan Rosenheim, the News Director at KPIX, has been rumored for months to be a NY (CBS) target for being let go. PIX's ratings have been in freefall; a rapid turnover in reporters has hit the newsroom; KPIX anchors have been all over the time slots to no avail; relative unease continues to permeate inside the station.
CBS brought in respected exec, Bruno Cohn (who had an earlier stint years ago at PIX); Cohn was brought in to shake things up at 855 Battery only, mysteriously, Cohn didn't shake anything up and decided to get out and retire.
PIX has problems all over its platforms but the morning show is thought to be in extreme dire straits with bottom-barrel ratings, low staff morale, and an apparent disconnect with a producer who has no idea of what she's doing. Making matters worse, the on-air folks have NO TRUST for one another and seem to be settling their own agenda. Other than that, everything is just peachy.
*Brittany Shipp, KRON's sultry weather forecaster is indeed actively seeking a gig in LA ...where, I don't know but KTLA or the Fox O and O are likely outposts ...it's not that she hates KRON but she wants more money and she could probably make close to double what she's getting at 4; Shipp has a shapely figure and magical camera presence and is well-regarded by a number of LA media agents; her father, a retired LA cop and brother are residents of Southern California too.
*Peggy Bunker had an apparently higher opinion of herself than did her KNTV (NBC Bay Area) bosses; Bunker and station had a mutual parting of ways (so goes the story but I'm also told she was shown the door) It's all a matter of semantics.
Bunker never moved the needle enough to get to a fulltime weekday gig and she began to languish on the weekend. Her style was rather tepid and almost boring to a point --frankly I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did. Officially, the station sent out word she "was exploring other interests" --in reality, Bunker saw the handwriting on the wall and split --KNTV isn't sweating.
*Word at KGO-TV is that almost everyone is fixated and in "Heather (Ishimaru) mode." Several staffers have no use for ND, Tracey Watkowski and her involvement in recovering KGO reporter and her scheduled lawsuit that is to begin next week. Unless Disney (KGO parent) settles which it is rumored to be.
I cannot believe KRON4....they have this guy there, Gabe Slate that used to do the Tech Report....now he's just a plain regular anchor doing the news. If you look carefully, he ALWAYS wears a light blue checkered short sleeve shirt.....must not get paid much at KRON.

I understand the Maury Povich show will be coming to KRON soon....this is an AWFUL show....

And last. Can he go 5 minutes on Radio anymore without telling us what his son did today? Who cares? His obsession to sound like a new father is weird. He's more like the embalmed old guy kept in the attic by the young wife to collect the SS checks.
He like a mini Trump of the same age,that has to overcompensate on all parts of his life.

DeleteIt's obvious Peggy Bunker is telegenic, and she seems to be smart, but she completely lacked the wow factor in her weekend anchoring on 11. The difference between her star wattage and, say, Ama Daetz's when she started on weekends at 7 was night and day.
ReplyDeleteMaybe NBC Bay Area should hire Brittany Shipp to co-anchor weekends with Terry McSweeney. That might make for a dynamic newscast, get Brittany out of the KRON zoo and keep her up here away from the corrupting influences of LaLa Land.
It would be hard to keep Brittany once she feels the pull of LaLa Land. LaLa Land is where you get the best exposure for all kinds of media opportunities. There are a number of TV reporters/anchors who have been active in LaLa Land for 30+ years. For many they don't need (or want) a bigger stage.

ReplyDeleteThe way Darya acts LIVE on television is such a shame for the station when news and its anchors suppose to deliver a serious natural performance to the audiences. But, instead, she acts like a goofy nut on LIVE television eating a banana within 2 minutes that teaches kids a way to choke themselves. Today, she try to act funny during the donation segment when Hurricane Henry is a serious manner, what is so funny!!! I know why KRON 4 news get the lowest lowest ratings, news is not too bad, the reporters......OMG
ReplyDeleteTrue about Los Angeles being the biggest stage. While NY anchors will most likely gravitate to network spots, it's because they are handy, usually down the hall. What LA personalities can do, especially women, is make an easy jump to "Entertainment Tonight" and "Extra" and other nationally syndicated gigs. Anything new KPIX does should start with Juliette Goodrich and Paul Deanno.
ReplyDeleteDarya and the fundraiser was just terrible. Her over the top mugging for attention is unwatchable. In calling for donations she urged people to donate by saying she would record a message for them...really? That's what people really want, a record message from you. There were no takers.
ReplyDeleteGabe Slate seems to be a good guy but his tech reports were either old news or just plain lame. Being in the tech mecca I would expect a better product.
All told, KRON is simply low-budget, basic local TV. The stories are simple with no depth. They are often one sided since the reporters don't have time to wait or cannot get more than one interview.
And what's this Rich, Pero and Folsom live together? Wow!
