KPIX is in hot water with the Vallejo Police Dept. over a video in which PIX reported that a racial slur was used in a vehicle stop. In fact, as the video shows, no racial slur was spoken and the cops have since asked 'PIX for both a retraction and apology

PIX hasn't responded yet but as a VPD press release notes:

"The driver of the vehicle denied that the officer used any racial slurs and specifically denied that the officer used the "N-word". The passenger of the vehicle, David Plancarte, was arrested in connection with an armed car-jacking and refused to give a statement."

 Also from the  police:

"The Vallejo Police Department has contacted KPIX CBS 5 and they have since stopped airing the story and removed all references from their website."

It has.

We've contacted KPIX for a comment.

  2. If true, totally irresponsible reporting. Looking forward to the apology.

  3. Think PIX and its devout viewers will want to pursue the selfie dude that thought there was a slur?

  4. The term "caught on camera" makes the newsroom turn to jelly. All precautuions and practices go out the door because producers go Ga-Ga over "Caught on Camera"...

    "Tonight...Exclusive Caught on Camera..!!!"

They usually end up peeing themselves like they did this time...predictably.

  5. CBS just got handed the VLDC "out" on a silver platter.

    You want a scapegoat?
    You just got one.

  6. This is the era that a 2 acre grass fire in Sacto becomes the lead on a 6pm Bay Area news broadcast because THERE ARE VISUALS. (Yes, that happened over the weekend. I was impressed because, like, I've never seen a grass fire on TV before this) No proportion, no context, get it out there and get it out there first-we'll always have time to correct it. That and 3 weather reports in the first 25 minutes. Must See TV!

    1. 90% of all live shots are just stupid and useless.
Years ago I worked at a station which had recently acquired new vans...new mircrowave gear...new wireless mics...and a new lease w/a chopper company.

Our News Director called a staff meeting...to excitedly announce these new acquisitions. He then proclaimed that we were going to exponentially increase our live presence..."because now that we have these toys, we need to use them! They're not doing any good just sitting in the parking lot. Producers...start using live shots !"

Great. The REAL reason why we started doing more live shots--and I suspect, the continued reason why we still see them today.

  7. It's Tuesday, July 11th, and my program Armstrong & Getty is being hosted by others. Has it finally happened, Rich?
Is A&G gone for good? I'll have no place to go in the morning, other than more Elevator Music on FM. (sigh!)

  9. I hear the cop telling the occupants of the vehicle that he will "fucking blow you away" and then some stuff before that that COULD be the word "nigger". I'm sure that situations like this are high-pressure and words fly in the heat of the moment. Nobody got shot; nobody is dead. Why is this an issue on EITHER side?

  10. Rich: At 5:18 pm tonight on KPIX Channel 5 o'clock news anchor Ken Bastida said the alleged racial slur supposedly uttered by the Vallejo Police officer to the man arrested for carjacking was NOT in fact a racial slur yet KPIX did not offer any on-air apology for their initial misreporting of the story on their past weekend Saturday night 5 & 6 pm newscasts. I remember watching the story but don't exactly remember who the GA reporter was--KPIX easily the WORST run local news station in the Bay Area-even more disgraceful than KRON.

  11. Oh, who cares? This is so stupid to fret over. More important things in the world to worry about. Big fucking deal.
