Whenever Lydia Pantazes at KRON is done reporting she says everything in one way but when she gets to her last name she says it with a profound Spanish accent. Why do reporters do that? Do they think its cute? I have only ever seen latino/latina reporters doing this. For once I'd like to see someone with a "Caucasian" last name like say Johnson sign off and play the same game. "That's Dave JOHNSON!...back to you".
You mean, "Ri-CO CHACON!" Channel 7 News? I believe it's a way of lending respect to their native tongue. Or high-grade ego in act, one or the other, maybe both.
@11:03 Because that's the CORRECT way to pronounce her name. She doesn't have to enunciate it as you deem fit and if you're incapable of accepting that, watch another newscast.
11;03 AM. Just you wait until Lydia starts "rolling her 'r's". It's not as easy as it may sound. Then, once learned, it's almost impossible to stop rollin' for every 'r'.
Hi Rich: I haven't seen KGO TV's veteran distinguished reporter Carolyn Tyler on the air lately. Is she on semi-retired status like Cheryl Jennings or is she on leave. Keep up the great work Rich. Cary S.F.
Who is the blond reporter at KRON that says everything in a weird way at the end? It's like the last syllable of every word is drawn out almost in a valley girl way. Is that a speech impediment?
To be honest I can't watch KRON anymore it has become so lousy a product and its news a waste so I don't know your blond reporter q but I'm sure out there someone does.
It seems to me that KRON no longer even tries to do quality. When I saw Britney show up in a skirt and running shoes on successive evenings, it was over.
They are also lazy and/or uneducated when it comes to actually pronouncing a (foreign) name correctly. Case in point: on the most recent segment of Vicky Liviakis' "Dine & Dish" Catherine Heenan called the restaurant "Tele-FER-ic" instead of "Tele-fer-EEK," named after the sky train gondolas in Barcelona. Worse yet, Vicki said the exact same thing in her taped piece despite the Spanish owner saying it correctly multiple times.
I love Mel --always liked her as a reporter on KGO and as one of Lee Rodgers partners on KSFO when they had a legit morning show. Mel was working on KSRO in Santa Rosa and recently left. I hope we hear her again and soon.
Hi Rich, In one of your previous posts a commenter had written about "weather readers". That got me thinking..do bay area TV stations hire weather people without any previous weather experience? I know Steve Paulson is a qualified weather guy, a meteorologist, but are there weather hires these days that have little or no previous weather knowledge? What do station managers require when they hire weather people? Kathy SF
They don't require it, but in theory, Kathy, they'd much prefer and yearn for people that have meteorologist schooling ...which, by the way, doesn't necessarily make for a good "weather reader."
Lord knows I'm no Trump supporter but the media is exaggerating his demise. He'll not only finish his term but be reelected. Again, not my preference, but he has very strong, unwavering base support. And if Hillary dares to run again in 2020, he'll wipe the floor with her. If you could turn back the clock and there was no email investigation, he'd STILL win. He's hit the lowest common denominator instead of appealing to our better angels, and that's what wins today, no matter what the media tries to show.
My mother was raised a New Deal Democrat and is head over heels for this guy. A friend of mine in Cleveland who is a middle manager for an old economy metals company is a registered Independent and feels the same way.
Yes, he will extend his Senate margin. Yes, he will be reelected. Why? Because we aren't the United States of California. I know there are folks reading this who don't want to hear that but it's true. Money for these big races is raised at the extremes and that likely means what it takes to turn the crank and fill the coffers for 2018 and 2020 will also pull the party so far to the left that my parents and my friend and others like them wouldn't even consider voting for the libs.
Polls shows his popularity with his base has eroded. Ratings right now are in the low 30's. That means when Dems comeback in 2018,Trump will be impeached, and his plans with Russia ended. Unless Trump does a junta. Takes over this country. That's possible too.
Stan, is that what you want to hear or do you really believe it? We don't get census numbers until 2022. There is no reason to believe the House will move from where it is right now until at least then if not later. Even IF you were correct, the Senate is staying right where it is and there is no possible hope of Trump's conviction there. Do you know nothing about our system of government?
@4:01 There's no accounting for stupid. Besides, it's the same city that accepted LeBron back with open arms and this after residents made fools of themselves by burning his jersey like jilted lovers. So no need for the sanctimony.
Time and again, welfare-dependent Red States ignorantly vote against their self-interests and then when their reps fail to deliver, these same hicks expect Blue State handouts. Perhaps if you truly were the "United States of California," yay-hoos would be better off.
Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida have for many years determined who holds the White House and that isn't going to change. That's the way it is. I distinctly remember coming here up to a year before the race telling everyone two out of three among those states and guess what? Spot on...and there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it. He's gonna extend his party's lead in the Senate and win another term as well. You can't stop that, either.
@1:32 It's not rocket science and stating the obvious doesn't make you prescient. Hick ignorance aside, the Supreme Court decision (you likely have no clue which one) and GOP gerrymandering have guaranteed your Messiah's re-election as well as Senate gains. Though you fashion yourself as intelligent, the truth is that most readers here are miles ahead of you.
2:51... You want to talk about gerrymandering? We can spend all day long talking about how California is the way it is currently. The Dem's let everyone and everything in (be damned current citizens we need votes!), want to give them every right in the world including voting rights (to keep them in power), cry if you try to deport them, then they have a child and 18 years later you have a fresh new Democrat voter. Rinse, repeat.
HI Doreen: They won't literally disappear but their product has been largely been marginalized at worst and destroyed at best. Your prediction is not so out of the ordinary.
No, not at all Kev because they still have too many holes in their overall content and massive signal problems preventing many people in the Bay Area from hearing them.
Hey Rich, good to hear that you're feeling better. Has anyone heard anything abput Bernie Ward lately ?? Does he still even live in the bay area anymore ?? He's so far under the radar Iccan't find anything on him...hey I haven't checked the RSO page yet perhaps an update can be found there.
Why does Ann Rubin at KTVU say everything in a weird way at the end? It's like the last syllable of every word is drawn out almost in a valley girl way. Is that a speech impediment?
Those songs the Jersey fella puts together are so ridiculously lame. And to think he's what? Mid 40's? 50? And he seems to still get his self worth from knowing bands and idolizing musical acts. It's beyond ridiculous.
I love Tommy's Joynt in the city and order the beef burgundy ...a LOT of food and dirt cheap.
My fav local news team is KGO's Dan Ashley and Ama Daetz --consistent quality delivery --the BEST in my book. Their 9 o'clock newscast on KOFY is one of the best.
Hi Rich, any news on Rothman? He needs tonsil time, he had a podcast for a while and a personal website but no recent activity. Be nice if he had social media presence too.
Rich what would you consider to be the best decade in Bay Area News & Talk? When I got to the BA in 1987 my school bus driver had KGO in the afternoon and Magic 61 in the morning on the radio. I Do not recall the host buy it was engaging for us 5th graders!
I would think the '60's was the best decade for radio with musical variety, the advent of FM, and some great local stations like KSFO with popular radio personalities like Don Sherwood.
The '70's were good at KGO with iconic hosts/talk.
Just curious. I'm wondering what anyone finds to listen to on local radio at night. I have found absolutely nothing I can stand. I'm a morning guy and enjoy going to bed early and listening to the airwaves rather than watching the TV but of late I can't find a single thing that is not repugnant to me. It's the moron Hannity or that idiot on KGO or the gang at the end of the dial trying to get me to sign up for Bible classes. Am I (hopefully) missing out on some obscure station where I can find some semblance of might find something not intelligent broadcasting and not this polarizing crap?
Glenn Beck is on 650 am Sacramento, his show is hit and miss. Sometimes he goes off the rails with doom and gloom. He is easier for me to listen to, now that Obama is not his punching bag. He is critical of Trump, and at times he does some pretty in depth analysis of different subjects. He is easier for me to listen to than Hannity, who is so predictable in his opinions of Democrats. John Bachelor comes on KGO at 10 p.m. Too bad KGO didn't have the good sense to keep Pat Thurston on 7 to 10 p.m. or put John Rothmann on in that time slot.
I don't get FM too well in my studio so usually my fallback is Giants games on KNBR, beyond that maybe a little KCBS...I'll take Family Radio on 610 before I'd ever go to KSFO, KGO (excepting Rothmann/Thurston, or 910, 860, or anything up the dial.
My recommendation would be to purchase a WiFi radio. There's so much out there available through your router. You have no idea and I had no idea until very recently.
I've noticed that KGO 7, KTVU 2 and others during the news that the wrong clips, sound or anchor misspoken story is happening more often. Who is responsible for these errors?
Tv control rooms & studios are highly automated. There's a show producer running the show & fact checking scripts, the technical director programs the video switcher which handles picture transitions, graphics & video clips. Sound follows video so the TD is running that, as well as driving the robotic cameras. There's a lot the TD can get wrong from coding the switcher to timing. As far as pronunciations the producer of the package, show producer, and even the anchor can have a hand in editing scripts, so any one of them can catch a mistake.
I was going to make a comment on Ama Daetz putting on a few pounds. Well she did, for a good reason. She's four months pregnant now. Best of luck to you Ama.
didn't have to read the blog to know that - she was off a week last month, doesn't really look like she is feeling well on set, lots of black clothes, hands in front of belly, doesn't leave the desk --- what's the big secret ???
Rich, do you think that UFO/Big Foot radio would be better on KSFO overnight as a lead in to the morning show. I think Coast to Coast would be better on KSFO as opposed to being on the albatross, If I was programming I'd dump Glen Beck and program to KSFO, it would be a great lead in, much like KFI does with their programming, America's morning news is lame.
Thanks for the tip on the WiFi radio. I've heard about them but haven't done any research on them. Any models you might recommend?
Lately I've just put on the BBC. The downward spiral of local radio has really depressed me. As a kid I started with Les Crane, Jim Moore and Ira Blue. Now look what I have at KGO.
