Monday Mayhem; News, Notes and Comments

*Maria Medina looks a little more top-heavy --maybe there's a new directive at KPIX. I haven't seen her but my eyes in the orchestra insist there's been some noticeable change.

*John Rothmann was discussing in detail the latest shenanigans involving our crazy president--great radio, great callers, all over the weekend on KGO when he had to change topics, most notably Sunday night. If only the bozos at KGO knew that you don't screw up a nice, cohesive conversation involving the POTUS and wire taps (alleged) to break in a new topic. Dumb asses.

*KTVU: 4 weather forecasters; 4 sports anchors. Excess? It's not my money.

*A certain KTVU female reporter was complaining about being the recipient of unwanted harassment (sexual and otherwise) on social media. Uh, dear, with all due respect, it's all part of the landscape now. Nobody is saying deal with it but in today's environment what the hell did you expect? The eagle has landed.

*It hailed around the Bay Area on Sunday; an event that got lead coverage on TV News; you'd have thunk there was some natural disaster that hit the area, GROW UP, people. It's called winter. Geez, what a bunch of patsies, some of you are, most of all, assignment editors.

*Another union issue at KQED which is not surprising anymore --the only thing is if the morale there wasn't more onerous there would be a pledge break for therapists.

*The producer of the Ronn Owens KGO talk show had to pimp the other various shows for the upcoming "R and B Joke Hour" --a show so bad it makes Chef Ryan Scott's program palpable.

  1. It will only take ONE female reporter suing a station for unwanted social media sexual harassment...and stations will be forced to NOT require participation on social media.

    It's completely out of control.

Why didn't you name the reporter? Her name was posted on other TV news blogs today.

    1. I remember a "female apprentice" suing Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Her suit after a couple months of working on the "boats" was people cussed too much on the jobsite!

She shot herself in foot. Kap shot himself in the foot also.

And to that ONE female reporter who decides to sue, I offer the following...There is a very fine line between supporting your personal/political agenda and shooting yourself in the foot!

    2. You can't fight every battle in life. However, sometimes there are ones you must fight. I'm guessing that 1:03 here has never made history. No guts mean no glory. Civil rights laws are not about your "personal /political agenda". They are about fundamental rights under the Constitution for all. I'd bet my left you know what that donald trump has never read the Constitution. either.

    3. Social media is a joke anyways. Do you ever wonder how someone like the observer would get along in life without being able to put their nonsense out for the world to see?

    4. 3:46...Filing a law suit for sexual harassment in the year 2017 isn't what I would call "historical."

What's more important, exercising your Constitutional rights, or saving your career which you spent a lifetime trying to create, not to mention the time and money you spent doing it. Remember Sally Yates, she threw a 27 year Federal career out the window, great way to make history!

The worst thing you can do in this life is to make "life altering" decisions when you are upset, mad, pissed or have just had it! Calm down, chill out, wait a day or two, then decide!

The Constitution is on a piece of paper, you are life and blood.

    6. 7:32 Sally Yates is a patriot who made history and who will continue to make history. You allege that female reporters"spend(t) a lifetime trying to create"...that's hogwash. Most of them are way too young to have even had a "lifetime". There are many other occupations which require hard work to achieve. Reading off of a teleprompter is not one of them. There is no license, or academic requirement for anyone to be hired as a "reporter". Television news and being part of it is not the most unique or important accomplishment. As for the ease of filing a sex discrimination lawsuit, it is not simple and impulsive(wait a day or two, surely you jest). It's complex, guided by counsel, and fueled by documentation, not to mention attenuated by the requisite procedure of first filing with the EEOC to get a "right to sue" letter(takes six months) Did you think there were lots of sex discrimination lawsuits filed in the broadcasting world? Are you afraid some uppity woman might sue you?

If ignorance is bliss, the Bay Area is Eden. I mean, look at who they elect to lead them. Hell, look at the entire state. Ignorance (most) everywhere.

    1. You must be new to Northern California and its weather patterns. This was an extraordinary year with hundreds of thousands of lives threatened because of those rains you think are no big whup.

    2. I'm sure I've been in the South Bay longer than you have. In fact, my family goes back well over 100 years here. On to your point, ANYONE who has lived here has seen years like this in the past. Regularly even. And well see years like this in the future.

    What an ass.

If someone called, say, your gal Carolyn Tyler the n-word, do you say "It's part of the landscape now"?

Too snowflakey to deal with it, I guess. I sure won't say anything about it, speaking as one.

  4. Regarding that KTVU reporter's sexual harassment complaints, it DOES sound like you're saying "deal with it." "Part of the landscape? What did you expect?" You seem to imply she should shrug it off. Sexual harassment is wrong and against the law. You seemingly are condoning the practice, Rich - whether intentionally or not.

  5. I'm watching FOX national news on Cable early yesterday. A young attractive female redhead is telling a story of Trump's accusations of Wiretaps..and she tells it from the Trump angle,"Its possible, etc". Fine.
THEN,Later on KTVU2,I see the VERY SAME reporter standing in the very same spot telling the same story, only this time near the end she ADDS "He offered no proof to his critics"
Oh I get it, FOX CAN tell the truth in liberal parts of the country..while the rest get the slanted conservative view!
So Fox isn't so blind after all....

btw- Hughes deleted his Tweet account. Gone are years of Tweets of happy times...

Why not just keep Joe Hughes. He was fine and adequate.

Talk about a skit that has run it's course.
This birdbrain idea is not funny anymore.
Give it up Mr Cool Guy Owens.

    1. Totally agree. What also hurts is Ronn's delivery of these lame jokes. He's not as smooth as he use to be and hard to follow at times.

  9. Hi Richard, you are right on about the weather comments, its the same thing in the summer when the temperature reaches 100 throughout the North and East bay Valleys, showing folks running for the pools to stay cool. Hail, snow on peaks, heavy rain, strong winds happen every winter, but when it does make news, thats where it belongs. When i as on KCBS and did the forecast in 35 seconds and got off the air.

  10. John R was a good host until the KGO Massacre of December 2011 when Cumulus changed KGO format and fired almost all the hosts including John R. They were dropped like dirty toilet tissues. John R is a paid democratic operative who shamelessly came back to the same place that treated him like shit while other hosts with high integrity stayed away. Instead of focusing on the shit in his own backyard, CA and shenanigans at Sacramento, he is paid to divert the stupid Californian attentions to Washington. The funny part is he and likes are under the illusion that CA is relevant when it comes to Presidential election and other matters. They are not and John's job is trying to convince everyone that he is " If I was the president....."! Wake up crazy man, you are not and never going to be so shut the fuck up and go home... LMAO

    1. John Rothmann, who worked for Richard NIxon as a young political aide(Nixon was a Republican) is a presidential scholar, par excellence. Now, more than ever we need expertise on the boundaries of presidential power. You've probably not noticed, but this story reaches a new and incredulous crescendo virtually every day. I suggest you'd be much happier listening to the delusions of grandeur exhaled by Mark Levin. You wouldn't be required to actually know anything. John is also the scion of a very powerful and wealthy family . He's a man who understands personally how great wealth can corrupt and has corrupted a certain short-term politician. Should donald trump be executed for treason? NO..it would be much better to put him and his son-on-law in Supermax wearing Ivanka-designed jumpsuits. No spray tans, hair dye, or hair spray will be allowed.Imagine.

    3. John Rothmann came back to KGO radio, because he loves being on the air, and he knows he has a large and loyal following. As one of his most ardent fans I'm glad he is on the air. What other hosts stayed away, I don't think any of them was asked to come back, Gil got a job at 910 am, until is went Spanish, Gene Burns died, Bernie was already gone, he was in jail. Melanie Morgan came back to KSFO after she was fired, although not for long, she couldn't stand the amateurs Sussman and Katie Green. As 12:40 points out John does not need the money, so why shouldn't want to be on the air. I use to listen to him a lot and still do, I don't find he has changed that much, he talks about what he cares about, politics, Israel and local issues (city and state) which is what he always talked about. These days he does a little more entertainment talk, such as movies with Tim Sika, but not too much. Besides when John is on it is usually in Pat's time slot, and she often had Tim Sika on, so that makes sense.

    4. 8:05 is just another mindless liberal. They can't think for themselves. So many of them, most with "issues". So sad!

    5. What's funny here is 8:05 knocking 3:55 (who was knocking conservatives and Trump) by telling him to go back to his conservative websites! LOL. Thank you for the laugh fellas. Liberals...smh.

  12. About these Facebook accounts by reporters and anchors: Does management dictate what you should or shouldn't put on in? I'm guessing they don't want you to get religious or political.

But do they only want you to post work-related stuff? Can a reporter or anchor post family shots/what they're having for breakfast/lunch/dinner...crack jokes?

I'm a former TV reporter (got out of the biz 13-year ago...but still love Rich's blog; it keeps me "up" on what's happening at my two former TV stations/my former co-workers)...and have always wondered about this. On my FB page, I only post pics of me playing golf/what I'm having for dinner/what I'm cooking....my kids basketball games/track meets, etc.

    1. That's the main problem. The is NO guide for reporters to follow. Stations want you to post often and about everything under the sun. All while you "develop your personal brand." You fuck up one little posting...pisss off the wrong sub-group of idiots...you are fired. It's a mine field in favor of the employer.

Can't wait for the first lawsuit. Hope that happens before some stalker kills someone.

    2. 12:56 I've often wondered about this, too.
I mean, what if a reporter only post family/puppy pics...and NOTHING about what he or she is covering for the day? Do the suits only want you to "tease" what you're working on? "Hey, everyone...make sure you watch tonight's 6pm show for my story on city hall fraud!"

  13. Oh great, another r&b joke hour where the hosts interrupt each other so much you lose the joke or they giggle so much you don't get the punch line. Joy. Piss Poor Radio.

  14. Another note I would add, assuming this site does some Sacramento market media along with San Francisco market media. Looks like CBS O&O station KOVR is on a temporary set till their new set is ready to be unveiled by late April/early May.
