Could You Imagine a Sports-Less Bay Area TV News Station? Thursday Tease

Image result for anti sports  Could you fathom a Bay Area TV News station that doesn't have a sports report? Of course you can because it's nothing so shocking anymore; in fact many stations are axing sports segments only to broadcast a sports report if there were something big, like a Super Bowl win or World Series victory --you get the gist.

Sports reports have become wasted time in these parts and around the country --there's simply too many alternatives and outlets. You can thank ESPN and others for that.

Mr. Radnich has said for years that local sports news often need spicing up (one thing I do agree with him on) and that's for stations that continue to offer sports during the various newscasts at night.

Remember the time when KTVU cut its sports news for a mere one minute not so long ago? That might be a highlight soon. KTVU is now owned by Fox so their emphasis on sports will remain the same being that they have NFL rights, including the 49ers NFL placement.

Other stations? Think again.

We'll get into this in more detail at a later time.

I agree with Raddy. The way to get eyeballs is with a little entertainment. I'm in the semi-minority in that I enjoy Gare's segments. On a related topic, I don't know how many times I've had a family member comment that Ibanez needs to retire when they see him on air.

  2. Did you know Henry Wofford left CSN?

btw-I'm ticked off the media today asked nothing about Russia or Trumps taxes..but asked over and over about who can use the bathroom.
Priority's are skewed. Like a big Trump win today..

  3. Perhaps some of the local sports reports could be a little more concise. Oftentimes, the Chris Bermanesque verbosity and rapid-fire humor makes for longer than necessary segments.

  4. Rich, it cannot happen too soon. When watching the news, if a sport segment begins, I walk away and do something worthwhile.

  5. PIX barely has any sports now during their late show; poor Dennis O comes on (whole segment is sponsored by a Japanese car co, by the way), reads for 1.5 minutes, followed by 6 more car company ads; lead in to Colbert show. That's not good tv.

  6. Remember Drew Soicher (I think that was his name) who did sports reports on KPIX without giving the scores of any games?

  7. The sports reporters here aren't worth a tinker's damn. Aside from maybe the guys at Fox2. They only go to the big pressers. They rarely go to games because they can purloin highlights from the networks. They rarely do feature stories and go to practices. In other words, who cares?

  8. Honestly, we got CSN Bay Area and CA as well as the other stations like ESPN, NBCSN and those major sports stations to get all the sports news. If sports news are gone during the local evening news, all the reporters will be jobless or seek other jobs.

  9. It seems many Sports Anchors have moved over ( Or told to ) to become a NEWS anchor.

  10. We don't need local TV sports--we can get all we need from ESPN...or ESPN/NFL/NBA/NFL/NHL.com.

All local sports does is get meaningless sound/talking heads from athletes--sound which is then re-packaged for the entire week, to be B-rolled with video from the previous game...or file vid. Seriously--they get post-game or pre-game soundbites from "media day" or on the field...and then the VOSOT's or PKG's are B-rolled with vid from previous games or practice. ANd if it's practice, it's usually someone stretching/playing soft-toss/taking BP.

I should know--I shot sports for 20+years at a couple of Bay Area TV stations. I left the biz over a decade ago--but I'm still seeing the same tired formula on every sports segment.

  12. In today's TV and web climate, I think the local network and independent stations don't do what they could do, but then I'm a diehard sports fan. They could build some viewers by including local college scores along with in-season and offseason news. You've got St. Mary's (top 25 men's hoops program), Stanford, Cal, the WCC schools, along with St. Mary's, like USF, Santa Clara and San Jose State. All have sizable alumni in the area. High school sports are virtually ignored, and now is CCS playoff time.

I think local college and high school sports could be covered a lot better by CSNBA. I'm not talking a show dedicated to it, like they're used to be, but at least show brackets of NorCal playoffs and maybe some notable stories of non-major sports. California is one of the most highly recruited states for all college athletes.

I get most of my national pro sports news from ESPN and local from CSNBA and websites like Bleacher Report where I can follow my favorite teams. I can find out a lot more from sports websites than TV and KNBR will reports on stories from Bleacher Report, Deadspin, and other sources, which are old hat to me, but not to a majority of listeners, I'm supposing.

  13. And...to the guy who posted that Radnich and Murph are on the outs? He's right. Today Radnich took it higher by calling Murph "A rooter"..while Radnich says "I'm a sports host". He went right for the Murph jugular.

  14. i'm not a cable subscriber and i wish that broadcast TV would have at least one decent 30 minute sports recap following the regular news. back in the day we used to get a full recap of all the scores along with more and original thought out coverage. now they all share the same highlight reel and "insights". also, the sports teases are almost as long as the coverage itself. there are lots of us broadcast only people out here, you would think that someone would cater to us.

  15. KTVU can eliminate the entire sports segment.
After all, no one will miss Mark Ibanez.
    He looks too old.

  16. Why, oh why, does KCBS have sports at :15 and :45? Enough of the repeatedly taped segments by Dave lewis. Over and over again. Do news junkies really care if Gonzaga beat the hell out of San Diego State in Women's basketball? You want sports, go to KNBR. Jesus, Jack, get a clue.

  17. Ah, Mark Ibanez....off camera he struts around like a celebrity peacock in heat. KTVU should consider dropping Mr. Pink.

  18. Do we even need "local" news? Most of the shows are rip and read from newspaper stories and attending press conferences. No journalism at all. Plus, 50% of folks are getting their news online now. TV news is a dinosaur.

  19. GET RID OF SPORTS?!?!?!

Get rid of the friggin' "and now back to the weather" for the same friggin' segment, green clouds moving in...blah blah blah blabbity blah. Weather seems to take 25 mins of a 30 min program.

The weather seg can only appeal to the "60-80" demo so they can see how their rheumatizz will be acting.
