5 Things You Didn't Know

Image result for 5 things you didn't know about 1. KPIX anchor Brian Hackney is paid on a freelance basis --meaning he's not even a part time-compensated talent. Even though Hackney, when he's not doing news, he does weather, and sometimes weather and news too. Plus, he's PIX's main fill-in so he's literally all over the place.

2. Speaking of weather --and there's been a Noah's Ark full of weather lately has paid handsomely for one Bay Area TV weatherman --a clause in his contract gives him extra money if he's on an extra number of times. Rain is good for the wallet. Oh, the name of the weather guy? Can't tell you because I was asked to be mum or else.

3. Ken Bastida's little so-called "joke", line, whatever, at the end of each 11 PM newscast on PIX is never funny nor cute. More annoying actually --and his sports enabler doesn't help. What you didn't know? The producers and director behind the camera don't think it's funny either but it's not their call. Management still doesn't have a clue on the pulse of PIX's few viewers.

4.The Bay Area's highest paid News Director: KPIX ND, Dan Rosenheim, makes roughly north of $300,000. Hey, Dan, now if only you could nail down a decent anchor combo at 5 PM.

5. Who is the Bay Area's highest paid reporter? KGO-TV's Wayne Freedman --the Circle7 reporter has about 27,000 Emmys and a high-six-figure salary. Tie with KGO's Consumer Reporter/Anchor Michael Finney who is close to around $375K a year and that's some good coin too.

  1. I heard a few years back that Wayne has so many of them that he keeps them in his garage.

  2. Hack did a piece several years ago on the Bay Area and earthquakes. If you haven't seen it yet. I strongly suggest seeing it. He did an outstanding job. He's a very talented individual.

  3. With Hackney, those news and weather duties include the longtime work he has done as regular weekend coanchor.

  4. Yeah, that close during the PIX weekday 11 PM news is looking more and more uncomfortable.

  5. Re: Hackney: So he has his own production company, contracting his services in this case to KPIX where he probably does better financially in this business model.

  6. Hackney is a talented guy but he is creepy in his ability or inability to relate to the women at the TV Station...He reminds me of the high school jock who can't get a date..Hackney thinks he's God's gift to women...embarrassing..hilarious..oh well bring on that weather forecast Brian! Juliette is not interested.

    1. Juliette should know she's on the wrong team.

  7. Agree...I believe Hackney is single and that's why he can work weekends...

  8. Two items - Wayne Freedman and Michael Finney are worth EVERY DIME!! And Brian Hackney was selected as Alumnus of the year at Cal Poly a couple of years ago.......just saying.

  9. @5:16 Hackney is actually pretty charming and has a great sense of humor. Nothing creepy about him. He doesn't take things too seriously in the newsroom. At the same time, he's talented at what he does.

  10. Amazing how bad KPIX is given that they're a CBS affiliate. They're embarrassing the network

    1. I've mentioned before that I travel for work and KPIX for quality doesn't begin to compare to the other CBS affiliates out there. I froze my ass off for a week in Minneapolis and what did I watch from the hotel room? WCCO. It was the best local news they had.

I still say the reason we see this sort of thing not just in media but seemingly in all segments of society here has to do with the ridiculous cost of living. The place has been warped by money. Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that happens here is a function of the price of real estate. I've got another trip scheduled soon and I know damn well that as soon as I land, I won't see this childish trashy bullshit anymore. It's like flipping a switch.

    2. You may be right Rootstick, but because of the ridiculous amounts of cash it takes to live in the Bay Area, it also means a lot of really smart educated people live here. Follow me now, that means the last thing they do is watch local news, and broadcast TV in general. That is why the local news is crapola on a shingle. They have to play to the people on the wrong side of the digital divide. You know, people who still had 8 tracks when most people had cd's.....way behind the curve....now that they have cd's....most everybody has been downloading for years, and as Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, "And so it goes".

    3. Other than being painfully over simplified, ill thought, and thoroughly specious, 5:11 and root are spot on.

  11. Reporters, weather forecasters and anchors inform viewers and listeners. All of the above (and others) do a good job ... to be working in this market, they should.

Michael Finney provides a SERVICE to the Bay Area, from his daily reports, sharing tips on radio and his personal involvement in solving consumer difficulties. Moreover, he has a staff of folks who work of problems that we don't hear about. They can't pay him TOO much for his service.

  12. Brian is such an underrated anchor who should be promoted to KPIX 5 morning news as a permanent anchor. Now you mentioned that he is a freelance reporter, the chances is NEVER unless Brian get more recognition by CBS and KPIX. Hard working reporter filling in and I even did the calculation he did evenings and mornings too within hours a few years ago. It just sometimes some reporter we dislike or do not want to see gets promoted, Brian is over qualified to serve as a main anchor, permanent main anchor. As for the weather, let someone else do it or he can also do the fill in for that just to show how hard he is doing both main and weather like on the weekends.
