What has Audrey Cooper, EIC at the Chronicle Accomplished?; Bay Area Radio Suits Don't Respect You; KNBR Off Air Hours Monday Morn; Warming to Azenith Smith of KTVU; Not so Much, Heather Holmes and Jana Katsuyama; Monday Opener

SOMEONE, quick, tell me what Chronicle EIC, Audrey Cooper has accomplished at the paper? Cooper was appointed, with great fanfare, as the first woman Editor-in-Chief for the Chron --terrific, but after that, again, what has she done?

The Chronicle is laboring along --with its print edition, like most other major newspapers, bleeding red ink. Moreover, under Cooper's stewardship, there appears to be a huge wall of supporters and non-supporters alike; she picks her favorites and apparently likes to dump on those people she regards as "underlings."

Several star writers have left the building under mysterious circumstances; Jon Carroll retired last year but several industry sources say he was forced out. City columnist, Chuck Nevius is leaving in December after thirty-plus years but several sources say he too was forced out.

Cooper has been mum on the matter but for a woman journalist who supposedly has a lot to say, has said virtually nothing since assuming her post. Most EIC occasionally write Sunday columns or state of the paper pieces, Cooper has done neither. She is, according to staffers, a big Giants fan.

And she detests bloggers. "You're not real journalists," she said. Yeah, every time I see Cooper I think of the next coming of Maureen Dowd.

Hallelujah.

Image result for Respect*I've been writing a lot more about TV News, less about Bay Area radio. Most of my lack of radio columns have to do with the further degradation of station, both AM and FM. The people in Bay Area radio, the people who run the business, don't respect you folks. They think of you as dummies and regard you as nincompoops --they are vile people and I don't care for vile people. Vile people annoy the hell out of me.

*The all-sports AM bleeder was off the air a good many hours early Monday Morning. Maybe the commercials went on strike.

Azenith Smith
*I'm beginning to warm to Azenith Smith, the street reporter at KTVU. She appeared to be a softie early on but has revved up the engine.

*Heather Holmes, KTVU's shoe correspondent, has told friends she wants to be considered a "serious journalist."

Then quit dressing like you're about to hit the nightclubs, Countess Heather.

And another thing: for god's sake, stop flubbing your lines and read the damn teleprompter --want to be a diva? Then continue to do what you do.

Jana Katsuyama
*What KTVU sees in Jana Katsuyama I have no idea other than PC quotas. The woman is a nightly embarrassment.

  1. Tell Heather she is really only a promoter of content...NOT a real reporter.
Shut-Up and tweet...like a good lil shoe model.

  2. I like the nightclub look- fits the long cool woman in a nightclub,etc... What I wish she would burn are the rugby/prisoner/horizontal striped top(s) she wears way too often.
Jana? Somebody investigate how a Japanese American woman has a Jewish first name...

    1. @ Stan.

Because it's not just a Jewish first name? It's a common first name in central and western Europe.

  3. Azenith Smith. Ok I'll grant you that she seems to be a reasonably competent reporter, but her enunciation is at times, awful. This has nothing to do with her ethnicity either. It seems like a lot of these youngsters truly don't now how to pronounce words. One of her reports a few nights ago featured her saying, "threadened" instead of "threatened" - several times. She seems to have a bit of a lisp as well. Learning to enunciate and formulate words properly should be the first thing these people are taught to do.

    1. Amy Hollyfield of KGO is the best street reporter in the Bay Area by far.

    2. Totally agree on Amy.

Isn't that how the Democratic party thinks of the voters in the Bay Area? They know they're going to have your blind support no matter how much they fuck shit up.

  5. I subscribe to a really great paper, The East Bay Times. I saved the Sports section, October 18 to prove my point. There are 18 pictures on 8 pages of this section, everyone of the 18 pictures are double imposed and out of focus!

I saved the Sports section and was going to cut every picture out and send them to the Editor but I changed my mind because I'm sure no one at that paper gives a shit anymore! Pride in workmanship, not at the East Bay Times. Proud about what you produce, not at the East Bay Times!

  6. I guess you cannot resist trashing an Asian every chance you get. Really not a good look.

  7. In the Bay Area, where there are some really boring and dull anchors like Kenny Choi, and bad ones like Keba Arnold, I would rather see the sexy Heather Holmes or the semi-sexy Peggy Bunker read the prompter. Maria Medina looks pretty, but needs more practice reading. She is Ok reporting though.

I grew up hearing how great things were going to be once women got into top leadership roles. Then all the pettiness and awfulness of men (read: white men) would vanish and be replaced by kind, nurturing, sensitive and far-seeing women. So tell me what Marissa Meyer, Elizabeth Holmes, Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, Sheryl Sandberg, et many a cetra has accomplished.

No worse than Amber Lee. Despite decades in the trenches, she still can't do a live standup without at least one flub. And she always looks nervous, as if it were her first time on air.

    1. Amber Lee is a fine reporter, who knows her craft, and brings weight and substance to every story she covers. Please look beyond an occasional 'live' flub or glitch. There is much more there. (I am not Amber, or a relative, co-worker, etc.)

    2. Tonight on the Ten she suddenly realized she was live in Berkeley and said, "HI!" Then she flubbed her live shot lead-in. She always looks like an amateur who just came up from Bakersfield last week.

  10. I can't watch Heather Holmes. She comes across as vacuous and not very bright.

    1. Sorry, but I don't think Dr. Tara Narula (CBS) is going to anchor the KTVU news. She is much hotter than HH though. Have you checked out Trish Regan doing Fox Business (11am in the Bay Area)...I think she is very hot and bright too.

  11. Today, on the channel 7 morning news, they did some incongruous human interest stories that weren't even tied to the Bay Area. My first thought was that their subscription to the Mercury and Chronicle must have run out starting on Sunday.

  12. Audrey Cooper...let's get to who hired her...she's a puppet for management..no one cares any more about the Chron...Kinda like Foxification at KTVU..No more journalism in newscasts and newspapers anymore...

  13. You leave Heather Holmes alone dammit!

  14. For a couple of weeks the Chronicle has had problems delivering its electronic edition. In order to read the current edition you must click on an old copy if it hasn't been deleted. When calling the Chronicle there is a recording acknowledging the problem but you can not speak to anyone.
I grew up with newspapers and I was a paperboy. I really hate to see the end of daily newsprint but it is only a matter of time before most papers go under.

  15. After reading this, two things come immediately to mind: thank goodness for satellite radio and nytimes.com.

  16. If Heather Holmes wants to be taken seriously as a journalist then she should start by losing the animal print tops. A few days ago she once again wore the tiger stripes. As Obama would say: "COME ON MAN!!".

This is the reason I seldom check in here any longer. I live in Elk Grove and couldn't care less about Bay Area TV.

Why don't you just kiss ass instead? I like listening to talk on the radio. I can't stand the crap that is on our local radio over here. Sacramento is the home of those goons Armstrong & Getty. I have always listened to Bay Area radio. Sadly it has been going down hill for a few years.

  18. Amber Jana Azenith are all good reporters do fine when anchoring. They don't stumble or bumble any more than Dan Ashley who does a lot and he's very good also.

I hate to criticize a woman but Heather Holmes dresses in weird costumes with plunging necklines like she's going to hit International Blvd after the broadcast. She looks unprofessional.

On back to weekends last October she came dressed as the Hamburgler and Morticia. I figured it was her salute to Halloween.

    1. On "back to back" weekends.

And that center part is just bloody awful. Looks like one of Charlie Manson's disciples. You want to be taken seriously dress like a professional. Normally have nothing to say about how anyone dresses on air male or female but Holmes' whole "thing" is not good.

    2. I don't know if you watch LA or national news feeds, (or Telemundo) but but plunging necklines and mini-skirts are very common. Try watching Fox11 when you are on LA, with Maria Sansone, Araksya Karapetyan, Lauen Sivan, Lisa Breckinridge, and Marla Tellez (from Bay Area BTW) ...all in low cuts and mini-skirts and stlletto heels.

  19. The SF Chronicle has gone from "Bad to Worst" since their newest Format!!! I Subscribe to the Chronicle's E-edition, $99.00 dollars a year mind you. And since the new Format, I have not received my E-edition of the Chronicle since the Change, and I also can not make any comments on the Chronicle website page!

I have asked the Chronicle repeatedly, "to please change to the Disqus Format of making comments," but NO dice! Even the SJ Mercury uses Disqus for their comment section, via the SJ Mercury website page!!!
