Pat Thurston The Most Likely Candidate To Replace 'Drex' on KGO Radio

Pat Thurston is the most likely choice as the replacement for 7-10 PM on KGO Radio. Although Thurston, who would like a permanent, full-time slot, will still be classified as a fill-in because KGO-Cumulus isn't ready to commit to such a position, a source told me on Wednesday evening.

The source also said it was "highly unlikely" that political analyst, John Rothmann, who's been doing a lot of fill-in work lately, would be given the 7-10 timeslot.

The guy making the call is PD, Mike Anthony, who himself is rumored to be on the hot seat.

Thurston, according to the source, will most likely stay on until the end of the year, at which time she might be considered for a full-time gig if the ratings are good; if not, expect a syndicated show --that's a specialty at 810 AM.

    1. I'd pick them both. Give Pat 7p to 10p and John 10p to 1am.

    2. Anyone but the newly "mainstreamed" Ryan Scott. Someone at KGO thinks he can do general talk, but he's really a general bore outside of his "cooking for millenials" act.

    3. Is Scott still drinking margaritas during that so called show?

  2. John over Pat, anytime!

  3. Pat looks like a young Betty White. She must have a team of undocumented immigrants working as her babysitters. How does she manage being a radio talker and Mom of triplets?

    1. Would you ever wonder that about a male host? Gah, the sexism here is astounding.

    2. Because no woman with kids has ever had a job ever. And it's not even a full time job! How could you even ask this question with a straight face?

      Delete
    3. Really, what a question to ask, also Pat's triplets just turned 13 they hardly need babysitters.

  4. John Rothmann is a complete and utter bore who has never had a unique thought in his entire life. I think it's great that Pat takes chances, has opinions, and puts herself out there! When's the last time KGO or any local talker had a female talk show host M-F? I can't remember this ever happening. If Rothmann gets on it's because he will use his influence to do so. Lord knows he has the deep pockets. Or at least his family does. I'm sure that's impressive to the Cumulus suits.

    1. Pat is more diverse on her talk show subjects. John's good at politics, SF History and Superman talk, that's about it.

    2. The last time KGO had a woman full time M-F..was a decade ago. Her name was Shann Nix. When Bernie Ward left, very unceremoniously, KGO was still on the top of the ratings heap. There was a year long period where Rothman, Thurston, Craft, and Karel filled the 10-1 spot in rotation. Rothman was ultimately given the 10-1 spot, and Thurston the weekend spot. Ratings gradually decreased and then tumbled into oblivion with the firing of most of the regular hosts in 2011. KGO should learn that the past is prologue. By now, they should certainly know what individual hosts do for the ratings.

John should be hired fulltime for the 7-10 spot

  7. Pat is just waiting for the next shoe to drop...She is VERY average...Rothman is a nice guy, but DULL. You can't talk about politics and play OLD TV AUDIO and think it's interesting...Mike Anthony is a Small Market guy and what is on KGO is what he thinks is good...and what Cumulus wants, which is cheap. But it's SF Dumbass... Not Gilroy. This is not a very good station, hasn't been since 12/1/2011. I predict Anthony is gone by years end...Maybe KFAT will hire him back! Franklin is Low Rent, Drex Sucks, Ronn is looking for a place to hide so he can avoid being home with his family, Copeland THINKS he good, He's Not! The standards are so low at Cumulus and KGO an Ant would be the only thing that would trip on THAT BAR. Can't Wait for La Banda KGO!

  8. Pat tends to come off a tad too ignorant for me. I suppose it is more her producer's fault that her opinions seem to be based more on emotions rather than facts. And at times I cannot abide her leftist leanings. As a lifelong Democrat, I very much detest calling anybody a "commie sympathizer." But that is how she sounds to my ears. And yes, I prefer John over Pat anytime. Her regular need to have him on her show this political season proves his acumen over hers.

  9. Both Pat and John are liberal, as for John not being an original thinker, that is your opinion. I find John very interesting, he does not always come out right away and give his opinion, he likes to leave it hanging, and then draw his callers out, and have them give their opinion, then later he gives his opinion. In my humble opinion that is good radio. I like Pat as well, having a female host would be good. Often Pat has hosts on I don't care about, but I would have no problem with her getting a permanent slot. However, I hope John also gets a permanent slot, I wouldn't miss Chip Franklin, John Batchelor is on from 10 p.m. to 3 p.m. I think, and then they do reruns of Chip, Ronn, or A&G not sure who they are repeating these days. However, John could be on from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and then Batchelor could do 3 or whatever hours. Just find a regular spot for John. 7:43 what kind of influence are you talking about? He got fired in 2011, and was off the air for years. John loves to be on the air, (which is part of his charm) if he had any influence at all, he would have used it before now. If John gets back on the air it is because he has a large and loyal following.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If John had a "large and loyal following" he would be on the radio right? He would had had "large" ratings previously right? Did he? Don't think he did! Cumulus isn't going to start paying more local hosts to be on at night which is why Batchelor and Owens are on at those hours. There's a better chance the station finds some syndicated brokered nonsense than putting Thurston on the air. Why are they going to spend the money for a live host after drive time? This is a company trying to CUT COSTS! Maybe Rothman can pay the station with his Levis checks?

      Delete
    2. @839am..Dr. Bill and Ray T. had huge ratings and they're not on anymore. So did Ronnn too I guess. Talk radio is pretty much dead. So sad.

      Delete
    3. Really true. Had Cumulus played their cards right, they could have kept the old staff like Dr. Bill and Ray that you mention, doing this by scaling back the contracts upon renewal. If they maintain a level of compensation commensurate with other groups at renewal time, they would have been reasonable options. Instead, they just axe the entire winning team, thinking that years of loyal followings don't matter. For some reason, they did exactly what I mentioned above with Ronn. I just can't understand why they didn't do it with the rest of the staff. Ronn must have been the token "kept guy". CBS has done a good job with this. They have lost a few good people along the way when they lowballed just a little too much.

  10. Pat Thurston makes me want to drive an icepick into my ear. I can only imagine her fans also enjoy nails on chalkboards and muzak.

Rothmann filling in is the only reason I've listened to KGO for more than 5 minutes in the last ~4+ years.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 8:39 you statement that if John Rothmann had a large and loyal following he would have a full time job as a host, makes no sense what so ever. The idiots that are running KGO and other stations as well, most noted the now defunct 910, have not made very many intelligent decisions as far as hiring hosts. The made some good choices, but mostly bad ones. Quite awhile ago the hired Angie Curio, I liked her, she was such an improvement over Drex, Ethan and Chip, and after the few months the fired her. So talent as a radio host and getting a full time gig, seem to have no corelations. I get you don't like John, but I still content many of us do. I love history and politics so for me it is heaven when John is on.

If you are lucky enough one day you will be a boring elder, and what I get from your blog is you are boring and close minded so most likely you will not improve with age. I might be older, but I'm not boring can keep up a conversation about politics, history, jazz, rock and roll, literature, travel and art, plus a few others. Can you??

    2. " if you like history and politics John is it, if you don't in my mind you are shallow."

It's a "shallow-minded" world then. The only people discussing history, jazz, classic rock and roll, literature, travel and art, are elders that advertisers don't covet.

  14. at the time we are having the craziest election in our history Rothmann is the choice hands down. yes, he is liberal BUT he is cogent, reasoned and never lock step in his opinions. in some ways he reminds me of Lee Rodgers in that his personal likeability trumps (opps) let's say 'overshadows' the left right paradigm.

    1. I couldn't agree more, I like Pat, it would be great if perhaps she got Chip's hours, I never warmed to him, in the beginning I though he was funny and somewhat interesting, but now I rarely listen. Or give Pat Ethan's show, don't care for him either, too many subject, too many guests and food talk. Those hours would be good for Pat, her triplets are 13, and in school at that time, or able to spend time alone. However, definitely give John 3 hours, any 3 hours, please. (in guess Cumulus exetutives reads this)

    3. That would be fine, but please find a spot for John Rothmann as well. I won't miss Ethan or Chip at all, I like John Batchelor at times, he is on a lot of hours, so even if John gets 10 to 1 late night as he use to, they could put John on 1 to 4 a.m. his show isn't live anyway. For selfish reasons I would like John on from 10 p.m. to 1 p.m. I work retail and often don't get off until after 9 p.m. and I have more than an hour commute, so that would be perfect. Since Alan Colmes departed the Bay Area I'm stuck with John Batheclor and Glenn Beck and George Nouri (whom I don't listen to) after 10 p.m.

  32. Rothmann is a one-trick pony. If he talks about anything else than presidential politics, he's lost. Just like Copie is a one-trick pony whose favorite subject is race. KGO needs more hosts who can do a show that's appealing to a wide audience, talking about a wide variety of topics, people like Gene Burns and Pete Wilson.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You are not really listening, your bias is showing, I loved the Gene Burns program, and like Pete as well, although John Rothman was a close second to Gene. The times I have listened to Brian the past few weeks, he has talked politics, which does not always mean race, he has talked education and similar issues, he has had motivational speakers on, he has interviewed the Mayor of Oakland, and today he had Eric Swalwell on (not sure of the spelling, but he is a local congress man) plus other issues escapes me now, how is that a one trick pony??? Same with John he has tackled PG&E issue, he had a fun our about "what do you miss from San Francisco from long time ago, fifties, sixties etc) he talked about the Zitka virus, and other subject, either you are not listening at the right time, or you are so bias you only hear what you want to hear. Besides that, like someone pointed out on this blog, most people who listens to talk radio are kind of political fanatics. What does Hannity, Levin and Rush talk about? Politics pretty much all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. KGO should step outside the market and at least take a look around, see who's out there. Doesn't mean they bring in an outsider to the Bay Area but the proverbial 'thinking outside the box' often nets positive results. This isn't a knock on either Pat or John. Simply, SF is market #4 and that alone commands attention. Put the evening up for grabs and see who bites. Do some on-air testing. It won't be the first time a heritage station in a major market did that. Allow listeners to weigh in. No, a decision won't be left to them but wouldn't it be an amazing thing for a station to serve the listeners they're allegedly serving. Admittedly, radio is looking for sure things and that often constricts creativity in hiring. But for a station that has initiated a good deal of change, stepping in line and going safe doesn't seem prudent.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm usually in favor of thinking outside the box, not sure about in this case. Although considering what the powers to be has done in terms of programming, I suppose finding a permanent spot for John Rothmann might actually be "outside" the box. Please no more syndicated show, some of them are okay, others are really good, but we really need a local host that has his/her finger on the pulse. As far as I'm concerned that is John Rothmann.

  36. I have been listening to Pat Thurston since she was on KPIX back in 1995. I was very happy when she began broadcasting on KGO several years ago. She is the only talk show host I listen to.

I like what KGO has been doing: Pat fills in for any host between 10 AM and 4 PM and John is on between 7 PM and 10 PM. If Pat doesn't substitute, she takes the 7 PM to 10 PM hours.

KGO should give John Pat's weekend hours.

    ReplyDelete
  37. That might just happen. John is in tonight for Pat, who had to take over for Ronn in the middle of his show, since he was not feeling well. John was in for Pat this past Sunday, and just announced he will be sitting in for Pat both Saturday and Sunday this week end. Pat also had him on as a guest last night for 2 hours I think. It seems clear that John will have a strong presence on KGO for at least the next several month. I would prefer he got the evening hours and Pat kept her week end hours, but anyway they find a permanent spot for John is fine with me. I'm not part of the "I hate Ronn" crowd, nor am I part of the "I love Ronn" I like him sometimes he has a really good show, most of his shows are fine, having said that, it is obvious that Ronn is having serious health problems, even though since his procedure last summer he got better, it seems lately there is just one thing after another, or his voice and concentration is off. I think his contract is up within the next 3 to 6 months, so perhaps John would be a good fit for that slot. His politics are a little more to the left than Ronn, but not as far left as Pat's. I just hope to hear him on a regular basis.
