Kate Scott wasn't that Horrible, Just Less Than Mediocre; Vanilla Wafers on 49ers Practice Opener

Kate Scott wasn't entirely horrible broadcasting the 49ers-Houston practice game on KNBR, just bad enough to warrant an excuse to turn off an exhibition game that is boring enough without sideshows.

I said I would know in five minutes how I felt Scott performed; I don't care for the voice. Neither does KNBR which stuck two other analysts in the booth (Keena Turner and Dennis Brown) ostensibly to aid Scott if she became officially horrid.

It's a stylistic thing with me. Forget for the moment how I feel about Scott's overall work, I'm not a fan. She's all vanilla wafer with wonder bread on the side. That said, she didn't embarrass herself and was just OK at best. How freakin' awesome.

You'll get quite a different view on Monday with a market so in bed with their PC bullshit that they'll find a reason to say Scott performed just so great and was so easy to listen to and blah, blah, blah, it's the nature of the Bay Area sports scribblers --thank God Ann Killion is in Rio. She'd be describing Kate Scott as the female Bill King. It's all part of the playbook--political correctness in the most PC-laden city in America. (The morning frat boys on KNBR will kiss her ass and Powlie will bow before her, mark my words)

Don't annoy me with platitudes about Scott. She's the most ungifted, overblown nonentity in the history of Bay Area sports media people. She didn't bomb on Sunday, God Bless her soul, she was merely mediocre --what a bonanza.

  1. I listened to her call the first quarter. She did fine.

    1. If Kate Scott were blind, I wouldn't let her use Braille to read the Big Mac seeds stuck to my ass. She is simply terrible.

  2. Kate wasn't terrible, but her voice is annoying and she seemed very nervous. I found it irritating for her to announce what college every player had been at. I realize the pro NFL announcers will say that once in a while, but she did it over and over again, particularly for players whose college days were decades ago. Like what's the point of telling us that Phil Dawson is out of the University of Texas? He's been in the NFL for nearly 20 years. It's not like he was drafted this spring. I'm imagining that she has a little script for every player ready to go so that she isn't stuck with dead air. She really needs some more PBP experience before doing NFL games.

  3. I listened to her for about 10 minutes in the car, and it was difficult. I'm not a Kate Scott hater, but I've never liked women calling football or men's basketball games. Women calling women's basketball or women's soccer or something like that is OK.

    1. Funny, Kate is now an East Bay JAP...though doubtful for Trump!

  5. I listened a little, she went 4 straight plays without mentioning what yard line they were at. A little too eager to drop factoids when a strict description of what was happening on the field was in order.

Not hating at all, thought her work w/Quakes was fine. But needs polish and practice before this assignment.

  6. Great rant, Rich. When I USED to listen to the KNBR morning show, I think she replaced Dan Dibley as the sports update person. DD was super annoying, but at least he had a personality and an opinion. Scott is pure vanilla wafer.

  7. Could be worse, like Santiago Casilla giving up that ninth inning homer.

  8. Ann Killion is busy writing platitudes about the USA Women's Soccer team and how Hope Solo was essentially to correct to malign the Swedish Soccer team who beat them. Ooops---Killion coauthored a book with Hope Solo--"fair & balanced"

    1. Good point 10:06pm.
When you need a good pitchman, call on none other, than Ann (let's be homers) Killion.

  9. Listened a little bit this afternoon. Didn't know it was her but didn't like the woman calling PBP so switched off. Now I know.

No attitude toward Kate Scott, just she didn't do well.

I won't listen to this woman's PBP again. It was painful.

    1. What particular "pain" did she cause you? Was it a pain in your oedipus complex?

  10. Who follows preseason football so closely!? Who does that, who has time!?
I'm more interested in that gory picture of Miguel Zwerlingo. How long will you subject us to such a freakish image? Very disturbing in so many levels. Could you at least photoshop the booger out of his nose!? Damn

  11. I listened to the radio call for a quarter plus about three minutes. Kate is no big deal, she wasn't horrid either. Just no big deal. "White bread"? "Vanilla wafer"? Oh, how very chicken soup of you ....

  12. Someone should take one for the team and try to make her switch teams.

  13. White bread slathered in mayonnaise with a marshmallow on top capped with
whip cream...and the "practice" game of which you speak was just a microcosm of what the 9ers season will be like. Now...its off to my favorite waffle house is Stockton!!

  14. We women want to know what bra she wore.
    Black Lacy
    White cotton
    Sport bra / yoga top.
    Training bra (Sears catalog pg.126)

  15. I missed her performance. But Paulie and Mutley praise? That's PURE KNBR. They would say it true or not true or partly true. I never go by any KNBR praise. You have to develop certain powers of tuning them out-wink-wink. They you might have noticed all put "genius" on to Fitz's homerism.
If a KNBR host even THINKS he has the smallest edge? He will run with that and beat it to death.
What we all want to do to KNBR.

  16. Kate Scott did well. No complaints.
It was here sidekicks who kept talking over her.
There were times when I could not hear Kate call the action on the field. Too much jabbering by those analysts.

    1. Definition of Sidekick: Slang expression for a close companion or colleague who is actually, or generally regarded as, subordinate to the one he/she accompanies.

Mustn't deviate from proper sidekick protocol, and interrupt The Kate. Ms. Scott is a football sage, and an exemplar of broadcast excellence. Those other two schmucks have only played on five Super Bowl Championship teams.

    2. If that was and example of someone who "did well", then the water in my toilet bowl swirls counterclockwise down the drain.

  17. Scott has the same problem Dave Fleming has....They are good at pbp but they have no personality(ties) to bring to the table..Without their opinions or at least their personalities they sound like any other mediocre broadcaster(s).

  18. I don't disagree.Ultimately, you have to have some edge, some "personality" to be stellar. Kate Scott may not end up being stellar, but she was very capable doing pbp on this first preseason NFL game. You all know it. Whether she'll be able to continue sharpening that basic skill set and add the edge, that certain "je ne sais quois" will only be known with time and continuing opportunity.

  19. Kate Scott is a female version of Dave Flemming. Both are white and boring
