'Talk 910' Radio has Apparently Gone Kaput; KKSF-AM now ESPN Deportes

Looks like an IHeart casualty in SF which when you look at their financials --this isn't terribly surprising that "Talk 910" (the website takes you to Sacto) is gone; a Spanish station has emerged. (ESPN Deportes)

Anyway, I'm not losing any sleep over this.

  2. I occasionaly listened to the Gil Gross program because he was a good interviewer and had interesting guests. Just one less choice in the vast wasteland of AM radio.

    2. I will definitely miss Gil. Say what you will, he had relevant topics, good guests and interesting insights. I learned something new every day. Unfortunately, besides him and Alan, they were the only thoughtful blocks of time on 910. I wish Gil all the best.

    3. I kind of agree with you, in terms of subjects, guests and insights, however since he didn't take calls, there was too much time filled with mindless chatter and his god awful stories from years ago, who cares? Nothing against Gil, he seem like a very nice man, and when he was on KGO and took calls he was a lot better.

    4. It's because of a new nearby very powerful spanish lang. station. Someone has to call FCC.

Anyone know an alternative? Or just internet streaming?

    3. also, it's worth a try to see if it bounces straight over to 860. i remember them going from KSFO to 910 without missing a beat on their last move.

    4. I believe you can get coast to coast on 650 am Sacramento and perhaps another Sacramento station 1530 am, if you live in the East Bay you can easily get both stations, I live in the East Bay and work on the Peninsula and I get both stations on my car radio on the Peninsula.

    5. yes, if you can't get 1350 (they have full replay)then try 1530

    1. It's a vast right-wing conspiracy, didn't you know? Aliens on Coast-to-Coast whispered it to me under that callers. Just a second....OK, I just asked one of those voices in my head, and he verified it.

      Delete
    2. Actually, the "Vast right wing conspiracy" did kill radio.

Hosts like Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, Levin, etc all have AWFUL ratings. The owners put these guys on because it was easier than programming stations. Eventually, advertisers wanted no part of these shows, and neither did the audience, as it dried up. At this point the networks paid too much for these shows and it destroyed radio.

So yeah, putting that crap on the air for all those years was actually the thing that destroyed talk radio.

There was no money to support young talent and producers who knew what they were doing, so now they're stuck with these fossils that can't bring in a dime.

      Thanks for playing.

  15. I am going to miss 910. I gave up on 810 after round one of the firings a couple of years ago. Now I am left with nothing when it comes to local talk with call-ins. I listen to NPR most of the time, but I did appreciate what 910 offered.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I really wanted 910 to make it after we lost KGO, but out of all the talkers they could've had, they chose Gil Gross!!! Are they freaking kidding me? The guy should be doing news updates and not host a daily talk show. Rothman, Taliafero, Thurston, and they chose Gross!! WTH, Karel wasn't available?

I do understand the slot was supposed to be for Gene Burns and I suspect the station's arc might have been completely different had Gene not passed.

  18. I will miss it. Gil Gross was really good. Although sometimes over the top, it was nice to hear Stephanie in the mornings.

  19. It's sort of hard to figure why the owners of 910 couldn't figure out a way to make a go of it with left-center talk. In the SFO area anyway, there's definitely an unclaimed market for a live and local product. For some reason Gil Gross -- who would be a good talk host for that market segment -- wouldn't take callers. And the two-some after Gil didn't take callers either. Alan Combs and Stefanie Miller took callers, but they were neither live nor local. And Coast to Coast, when I told my nephew I listened to 910 AM sometimes he laughed and said "Uncle! I don't believe it! You listen to the Bigfoot station?" Go figure.

    1. I don't agree that 910 was better than KGO, Gil was listenable in small doses. Corey and Joel not, totally mindless chatter, the show in afternoon the doghouse whatever, I have never listened to them more and a total of probably 45 minutes, if that, in the month they have been on. Pat Thurston, Ronn, Brian Copeland and Christine when she is on, is all better than anyway ever was on 910. Chip Franklin can be funny and entertaining, but he usually do not hold my attention for long. Drex he less so, kind of like Corey and Joel, just mindless emptyheaded chatter. Ethan Bearman okay, but not great, jumps from subject to subject, whenever he has a decent subject he stays on for a short time, take one or two calls and them moves on. As for the new kid in town 860 a.m. I kind of like Michael Medved, although conservative, he seem quite reasonable and levelheaded, does not repeat too many right wing talking point, sounds at least like he is thinking for himself. Listened a little to Dennis Prager this a.m. find him boring and spends too much time bashing liberal, too predictable.

Manager: "Gil, I've got some bad news for you, we're flipping the station after this break."

Gil: "What? Oh no! Hey I can do conservative. Trump can make America great again. Language, culture and borders. See I know all the lingo. I used to be Paul Harvey's substitute."

Manager: "No, we're flipping to Spanish sports."

Gil: "Hey, I know Spanish. Amo a los Gigantes. I could be the Spanish version of Jon Miller. Un grand slam de tipo Buster Posey's amigo Hunter Pence."

Manager: "No, you've got to pick up your things. Pedro will be taking over after the break."

Rhoda: Screams. "First you lose the real estate show, and now this!"

  24. Didn't they have a Hummer as their station vehicle? Wait, that was KNEW; it had Savage's mug on it.

Gil Gross wrote on Facebook that ESPN "came by with a big check:" iHard grabbed the $$. Gil's contract keeps him paid; no word on anyone else.

  25. When 910 first came on after KGO's format change in 2011, they were pulling in like a 1.2 rating. Now it's around a .3. Yikes!! Stephanie Miller (6am to 10am) and Alan Colmes (7p to 10p) are good All the stuff in the middle, not so good. I can see that 860 snorefest getting low ratings too. I'd say bring back Green 960. It was getting around a .8. That will be KGO's numbers pretty soon.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is just a continuation, and awful, to a point, as it 960 was, it's just as awful to lose another station here. At least Gross is a seasoned veteran radio guy, compared to the neophytes on other shows/stations. Corey and Joel were totally hapless, and the later people were beyond horrible though I actually never decided to try them out for more than 19 seconds, their promos were the worst. I actually had to have my late night fix, once occupied by the great Raphael T, so C to C sorta filled the bill, but now....And it does stink that it goes to another Mexican centric station, how pathetic. How our airwaves have been blown to hell, under our watch no less!

  27. I don't know anything about ratings. But KKSF became my favorite station once KGO went all news. (They're back to newstalk, but it's not the same.) No more Gil Gross, Corey and Joel, Dining Around, Alan Colmes, Stephanie Miller - gone, all gone. :(

  28. Well... I tuned in to hear Gil review The Fonald's speech from last night and suddenly hear Spanish??? Really station managers? No warning for anyone?? Obviously, we, as consumers of whatever garbage they decide to play, have zero choice in the matter. The owners couldn't care less about us, just their bottom line. Good programming has been on crutches with back up wheelchairs for quite a while. I tuned into 910 after the mess at KGO. Plus, Ronn Owens just wasn't good anymore. Then what did KGO have. Now, what do listeners have? Jack.

    1. Gil is smart enough has a great radio voice, did good interviews, but 4 hours of one person talking without taking calls is a tough thing to pull off, probably elongated his words to fill the time. Callers would have made the difference, but 910 was going to be different and instead opted for the hosts to be the focus of attention, that worked out real well.

      Delete
    2. I know. No clue why they decided to go non caller.

  35. Gil Gross had perhaps the most interesting show on the radio. He had great interviews and seem to have more in depth information than anyone. I'm so disappointed. He always said that he had his social media connected to 910 so there is probably no way to hear from him. Darn.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hopefully cory and joel will end up somewhere in guam. This is a loss, but not devastating like the 810 purge. I did however use 910 when nothing else was working......peehaps that was the problem.

  37. will miss Gill Gross for sure. Coast to Coast will show up somewhere else soon, I hope. The insanely stupid and not sexy Stephanie Miller will hopefully, not reappear anywhere else. Linking the 2nd adm. to Orlando and any shooting is the bottom of the no-brainer barrel.

  38. I understand Ronn Owens will soon go a Spanish language format.
After all, he is just another condescending liberal.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Was that also ERWIN HIGUEROS and Tito Fuentes SF Giant station?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I stopped listening to 910 after Gil moved to a morning slot and Corey and Joel took over. Frankly, that radio station had the sloppiest line-up on radio. Corey and Joel were basically unintelligible as was that Dog House mess. The fact that management chose to pit Gil Gross and Ron Owens against each other in the same time-slot is a real shame. But the icing on the cake is really that the Bay Area has had no real talk radio since 2011 when 810 first changed its format and 910 picked up its talent. We, the public, have been "talked to," not "spoken with." This is a major issue. The radio brass did not care to allow its audience to speak, and does not really care what we think. This is why the Spanish language sports station takes over without a word to those who were regular listeners. I hate to say this, but this is just one more example of corporate greed. I am tuning in to NPR going forward. At least they have interesting stories and intelligent talent.

    2. Why do you hate to say that about corporate greed, it's always been about that. I don't know a whole lot about iHeart media, but they repeat, as do the few other absurd media companies, the same thing over and over: tried to run a station on the cheap with lousy, mostly, hosts, no give and take "talk", then are saddled with horrendous ratings and blame that for having to sell on the cheap. Insanity. Maybe they made a pittance of profit with the sale, but probably not.

    1. That's a nice sentiment, but talk radio fans (myself included) are shall we say, a more "experienced" group on the whole. The fact of the matter, whether we like or understand it or not, is that younger listeners couldn't care less about talk as a format. You could put all those folks on, and sure, ratings might be higher than 910, but don't fool yourself into thinking it would be anywhere near #1. I love good talk radio and wish it was more popular, but this is the reality of today's world.

I am sorry to lose the station, which did employ some very good people both on and off the air. It's just math: ESPN is paying very good dough to be able to clear their product in this market, and iHeart is 20-something billion dollars of debt.
