KRON and KGO Radio Score Points on 415 Media, Stop The Presses; Shandobil Expert Analysis on Trump Speech Cool on TV; Rothmann Delivers on KGO; Friday Opener

Randy Shandobil (far right) with Steve Aveson and Vicki Liviakis on KRON
Randy Shandobil has been appearing on KRON as a political analyst --he spent a good ten minutes or so dissecting Donald Trump's acceptance speech at the GOP Convention last (Thursday) night.

It was refreshing and insightful too; Shandobil called Trump's speech, "Nixonian"more than "Reaganesque." How intriguing, precisely the reason I'm assuming KRON went after Shandobil in this big election year.

The first thing that comes to mind watching Shandobil: why isn't he doing this on KTVU, where he spent most of his career? Remember, Shandobil left the old KTVU when it was fairly civil and when it wasn't screwing up graphics every night and when its anchors weren't embarrassing the station and themselves.

Shandobil appearing on KRON, even in a limited position, says a lot about KTVU in its present state.

Oh, credit due department: I've ripped KRON ND, Aaron Pero, countless times but I give him props here for getting Shandobil to vacate early retirement and offer his analysis, it's a good move.

*After the Trump speech, which went beyond prime time in the East, just for the heck of it, I turned on KGO Radio to hear what was on and lo and behold, John Rothmann was hosting --the astute political analyst and entertaining host was talking and holding court on an extraordinary evening.

It was vintage KGO, imagine that: intelligent, cogent, interesting callers and a guy clearly in his element talking and engaging with the audience. What a concept! Again, I'll give KGO credit for doing the right thing, for a change--putting Rothmann on was respect for the audience, however dwindling that is in KGO's case, but it's a good start, particularly during this Election.

If KGO really wanted to show some gumption, they'd put Rothmann on late at night, permanently --a time spot he likes anyway--and possibly restore some good will toward a Bay Area radio audience --yearning for political discussion on the radio.

John Rothmann returns to KGO Radio
It makes a lot of sense.

  1. John Rothman continues to be an informed and engaging radio host regardless of one's political leaning. I too believe he belongs back on the air at KGO. However He would be better suited to the time slot of the late great Gene Burns. Thanks for noting his appearance last night.

    1. 910 has succumbed to "sanctuary city radio". Too bad.

  4. Seems like Talk910 is dead. All their social media is deleted, and their website is redirected to KFBK in Sacramento.

  5. It was fine until 10...Gil did his lead in - Rhoda was there...then it went to Spanish...thought it was something they were doing as a joke on Trump... but over an hour a little long for a joke....maybe it really is Rhoda and Gil

  7. John keeps Pat's utopian socialism under wraps. Like him even better when he's solo. 910? stopped listening many, many months ago.

  9. It was a pleasure listening to John Rothmann last night. KGO management decided to extend his show one hour to 11pm from 8pm. Rothmann said he will be on next Thursday evening to analyze and take calls of the Democrat National Convention starting at 8pm. I miss the KGO crew of Gene Burns, Ray T. etc.

  10. KGO radio management doing something that makes sense? ... lol .. It seems like the official mandate there at KGO is to not allow any 99%'er advocates to call in & use their station to broadcast the 99%;er point of view, and if that means few to no listeners, so be it.

  11. Damn, I never listen to KGO anymore so I didn't know Rothmann was on. Do they have some kind of schedule for when someone decent will be on?

  12. I'd like it better if they paired Shandobil with a conservative so that you could hear both sides, like the "point-counterpoint" segments they used to have before the equal time rule was lifted. Hearing the same liberal take on every station gets boring. Mix it up a bit. It would be better television ... as long as you don't have one of the commentators saying things like "Shana, you ignorant slut ..."

  13. Perhaps KGO is starting to see the light, local hosts, intelligent hosts, talking about what really matters. The have made some decent moves lately, by breaking into paid infomericals to do live programming when something big is breaking. I would love to see John in his old spot 10 to 1. I often work late and have a long commute so for selfish reasons I would welcome that. Having said that I often find John Bachelor interesting, although I'm not a conservative, if Drex disappears I doubt few people would notice, that too would be a good spot for John. Is it possible that when they put on John and if has good ratings, management would see the light? One can only hope.

I find it interesting that Rich sings the praises (and I do believe he is sincere) of both Michael Savage and John Rothman, these two hosts are as different as day and night. I love John Rothman his knowledge of history and politics, his civility, his delight in being on the air, and his delight when he has callers. So opposite of Savage. To 5:11 and where do the hear the same liberal take on every station? Every station and host like now 860. KSFO, both Sacramento stations, 650 an 1530, which liberal stations are you referring too. KGO is for the most part liberal, although Ronn is conservative on some issues, but some of their liberal hosts are not very good, like Drex, Maureen Langdon and Chip. Ethan Bearman is conservative, so I don't get what you are complaining about.

    1. She's the best they got right now. You have to stop listening to the right-wing garbage and open your mind up some.

  15. KGO might suck, but what station does suck these days, I find I have to try different stations and hosts to get something I can listen to. I like Ronn, Brian and Pat, although at times Pat is too liberal for me, and she has a lot of guests I don't care for. I listen to A&G in the morning or Brian Sussman, although I'm not a huge fan of either, I need traffic. Midday it is usually Tom Sullivan on 1530 a.m. and since 860 appeared I also try Michael Medved on that station, usually Tom Sullivan wins out, I rarely listen to Savage and not for long, too negative. At night when I drive home from work (I work late and have a long communte) I usually listen to Glenn Beck (and no I'm not a fan, but he can e thought provoking, and at times is so far out there it is a joke) and also to John Batchelor, depends what he talks about. I use to listen to Alan Coombs until 10 p.m., but now that 910 is no more that is one less choice I have, too bad, he is the only host I will really miss from 910.
