Why I Flip-Flopped on Roberta Gonzales

I HAVE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF RESPECT FOR ROBERTA GONZALES...which makes it only further frustrating that I now have to call her out.

It hasn't always worked that way; time passes.

Gonzales has had some personal problems involving family; me too; this has nothing to do with family; everyone sooner or later has personal issues, welcome to the world of life.

I've flip-flopped on Roberta because I've become disgusted with her giddy, golly-gee-wiz persona --both on KPIX and most notably on her KCBS broadcasts.

They {the broadcasts}are obnoxious, self-absorbed and frankly, disgusting; they are not befitting of someone like Gonzales who should really know better. Her constant pandering and suck-ups smell of disingenuous central. The phony voice, the self-congratulatory gore--really Roberta? It's not something that sounds genuine --more like someone yelling out, "look at me, listen to me, me, me!"

There's no denying Roberta has a soft heart and big and heavy one too. Ripping her because of her grating style on the air does not take away how much time she spends on charity work; how many hours she gives to attend PTA meetings; her work with people with special needs is quite admirable; she doesn't make a big deal about it which only makes it that more impressive.

That all said, her daily radio bits with Stan Bunger stink to high heaven --they are highly irritating and cause quite a bit of angst to people that are listening. Bunger seems in on the ride which makes it all doubly irritating.

Roberta, do us all a favor: STOP the BS. It is beneath you. You're a gorgeous, stunning, smart woman who knows her weather. It's one thing to be enthusiastic it's another to sound quite annoying and you've climbed the mountain. You don't have to sound like a grating, irritating woman. Maybe that's your personality --maybe that's just what it is but I don't think so. I think you're trying too hard. I think you're pulling the Sally Field card, "YOU LIKE ME, YOU REALLY, REALLY LIKE ME." Well, not so much anymore.

Roberta, you still have a huge fan club and I've spoken to many people {mostly older men} who would give a week's paycheck to have lunch with you; that's probably not going to change over this current state, but there are those that are loyal to you that are beginning to lose patience. Enough of the fake voice. Quit the gory audio crap with Bunger. It doesn't sound good.

Trust me.

  1. You're such a Anderson Varejao, Rich.

  2. This is not new with Roberta. Her fake delivery has been annoying for many, many years. Her staccato delivery, her lilting voice, random "s" sounds that slide into "z" sounds, her whisper to strong, all of it is fake, fake fake.

I'm one of these older men you speak of, and there isn't a chance I'd even buy her lunch, let alone give up a paycheck. Spanx used to work OK on her, but she's clearly gotten off her bike. Her phony laugh, head tilt and hair flip would put me off my Chalupa for sure.

    1. Maybe some older, older men would want to have lunch with her. Not sure why. Someone should tell Roberta to do her job and stop the self promotion. If you're that good, other people will talk about you. You don't have to blow your own horn.

  3. She says, "OK, Thanks for the insights!"

  4. I like Roberta. As soon as I started thinking of her as a performance artist instead of a weather caster she made all the sense in the world. With Roberta just put on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.

  5. Amen. I hope RoGo gets it together and comes back to planet earth. Great read Rich!!

  6. Hate to sound racist but did you ever think maybe it's a Latina thing. Sofia Vergara is the same way, and it's one reason I can't stand the otherwise-fine Modern Family. Roberta acts like an actress in one of those cheesy telenovelas, overdone and coarse. As with those actresses, I'm sure she doesn't even realize it.

    1. Wow. ...You hit the nail on the head! Not racist, just an ethnic thing. Have you checked out the Mexican women in San Francisco?

    2. When somebody starts their sentence with "Hate to sound [blank]..." 100% of the time, the very thing that comes next is [blank].

    3. @ 2:25: As a Mexican man myself, you don't sound racist at all. It is a reasonable explanation. It is entertainment after all. Now, 5:16 sounds like a prick!

  7. Not a bad looking woman for her age. Not as if any of you slouches have a chance.

Nothing is worse than watching Julie Watts( I was really hot once) fumble her way through the weather.

  8. TV journalism is a weird thing - it's a mix of information and entertainment, to a degree. You especially see how this is perfected on network and cable news - think William Hurt in
Broadcast News. The problem with Roberta, and I used to like her to, is she's gone from delivering information to performing.

    1. But I understand she knows the difference between "to", "too" and "two", a good thing.

  9. She doesn't bother me,but I know what you are saying. I just cant angry at somebody who doesn't put down anybody as she puts wild and wacky humor to work. Plus- What has she got to work with at noon? Like when she was at ch11..she would get silence, crickets.
Unlike that sports director who puts mean off the wall humor meant to spear people,Roberta has never had a laugh buddy..aka Pam Moore.
Weatherwoman pushing 60 cant just pull the "worship me"..she's got to use personality too.

    2. Laugh buddy- geddit? Moore is so trained, she starts to laugh before Radnich gets too the punchline.
Its why he doesn't even have to be funny on KRON to get buddy laughs..Or date her let alone marry her.

  10. I think there's a strong tendency for weather reporters to eventually fall into some kind of personal schtick because it's the only way to get through the very similar 2 minute forecast every day. It lets them zone out while they do basically the same thing over and over, day after day. Lisa Argen seems to have be able to avoid that trap these days though for awhile she was in her leather apparel phase a few years back.

  11. I personally like Roberta's Moxie, and Effervescent ways. I do know that she is going through issues with an Elderly Father, and if anyone has done that, you know how taxing that is. I think sometimes people go overboard in showing happiness, because in reality they are hurting, Imvho.

  12. But her annual drunken ramblings at the Emmys are quite the spectacle and VERY entertaining. And I like Roberta, a lot.

  13. Roberta for me was like nails on a chalkboard but not anymore. Now that Gasia Mikannoying and her over the top delivery is on MO2, I actually can tolerate RG.

  14. There are some real idiots behind the scenes at KPIX production you don't see Rich. Roberta is trying to give off positive energy. Sure it sounds phony but she's genuinely a nice person working for a company that is almost as clueless as KRON which is hard to do but it's true.

  15. I'm watching RoGo this morning and I believe the message has been heard. She's much more grounded, decaf?

  16. I can't stand this woman. The breathy voice, the silly shrill. Yes, as you say, rhe look at me! Is she trying to market herself a a sex object? I like the new guy, Kenny Choi a lot, totally professional, but am turning away to the NBC when Gonzales comes on. I don't want to be teased or made love to by this floozie. Weather people, my favorite for sure are on KTVU, all of them.

  17. I once worked w/Roberta (I'm out of the biz now).
She is a genuinely nice, nice human being. She is also a "Daddy's Girl"; VERY close to her dad--in fact, she flies out (SoCal) on many weekends to hang out w/him. Her two sons are also gone off to college (she's also VERY close to them, too)...so, yes...there is some upheaval in her life.

    But she is good people.

  18. Rich has finally come around on this one.

  19. I personally can't stand to listen to Roberta. It got to the point where I had to stop watching my fav morning show, CBS This Morning, because of the unending "local weather updates".

I'm certain that Roberta is a very good/nice person but until she decides to stop speaking as though she was reading to a bunch of toddlers, I will continue to tune out KCBS whenever she is on.

  20. Oh no! She makes time for her family rather than workout non-stop to fit some narrowly perceived ideal of what a woman should look like. What a bunch of mysoginist jerks you people are. Get over yourselves.

  21. Roberta is doing a solid job today hosting Bay Sunday!! Kudos RoGo!!
