If it hasn't already (and by all indications it has) KPIX should shuttle Allen Martin off the anchor desk -- and onto the Political Reporter beat (for the election) where he's much better for a variety of reasons. ONE is HUGE, but more on that later.
Its Sweeps Time.
We're too late in the ballgame but PIX needs to look at things. Its newscasts have become boring. Serious-ass boring. There's no spark; no lightning in a bottle. It can say all it wants about Emmys and this and that but there's no there there.
Part of that is on Martin who comes off as brash and arrogant on camera. I've said many times that Martin doesn't smile often; that's not so much a downer but when he reads the news you don't see much glimmer of hope. Moreover, he makes everyone else look and sound just as gloomy and morose as he is, what a bummer.
Don't get me wrong, Martin is a decent newsman but that doesn't translate well on screen. You know it, I know it, but CBS-SF doesn't.
I like Juliette Goodrich, a lot. Well, what's not to like? She's sharp as a whip and camera-savvy and she's very good in the field too. Any anchor (as she is on the weekend) worth their weight usually is a good reporter too, and Goodrich is both. Plus, she knows her game. Better yet, she's a veteran PIX talent.
I would pair Juliette Goodrich and Ken Bastida as my prime anchor duo --no knock on Elizabeth Cook who I think is getting much better as a news reader--just more an endorsement for Goodrich who brings much needed cachet to the CBS5 table.
And boy do they need it.
