Gary Radnich Has Total Control Over KRON ND, Aaron Pero, Even At The Expense of Staff Morale; Current Video Meltdown Won't Change The Picture Unless Media General Acts; 415 Media Analysis

Aaron Pero
IN ALL the hullabaloo going on at KRON the past few days over the Radnich/ Heenan video meltdown -- ONE THING is still a constant: the absolute lack of power from News Director, Aaron Pero.

More to the point, Pero is intimidated by Radnich. Radnich can get away with almost anything because Pero doesn't have the power nor the backing of KRON's weak upper management.

For starters, Pero's girlfriend is morning news anchor, KRON's self-anointed diva, Darya Folsom, who does a daily segment with Radnich. Folsom too has a wide swath of power at the station and often utilizes it at the expense of worker morale.

Gees, I wonder how she's able to get away with it? Nobody dare cross her line or else...

Pero gets his marching orders from Media General, the corporate owner of KRON (and its biggest station); it was MG that suggest Radnich apologize to Heenan over the air to get the matter dissolved and for its Bay Area TV albatross to move ahead.

Where was Pero? Better yet, where is Pero? Nowhere to be found. But that's not anything new around 900 Front. Pero runs KRON mostly through fear and intimidation and picks his favorites --Radnich is one of those favorites and anything even remotely controversial that could cause negative worker moral gets a pass. Why? Because in essence, Pero will NEVER act against Radnich even if Radnich has caused mass angst and embarrassment for KRON and its staff.

The video with Heenan clearly crossed the bounds of decency and was well over the top. I actually defended Radnich but was overwhelmed with negative e-mail from both KRON staffers and viewers who were disgusted with it and wanted Radnich to get the business from management --apparently Pero didn't get the memo.

Corporate is taking a long hard look at all of this; there is every indication that they are not pleased with its results --even MG (KRON) has standards --or at least they surely want to make it look as if they do.

The final chapter of this little affair hasn't been written yet; can't wait for the conclusion.

  1. Sounds like the tail wags the dog there. Is Folsom worth all that? She's the worst thing about the morning broadcast - like that matters, I guess, if hers and the ND's relationship is as described. He'd probably get some respect if he canned Radnich and stood up to Darya.

  3. Now I understand!! Radnich is the "real" Commanding Officer at KRON...he is the one in charge and calls all the shots. Now if you have managers without a backbone, who allow him to take charge...more power to the guy, good job Radnich.

It's called taking advantage of the people who spend their entire lives stuck on stupid and have zero management skills. The "Peter Principle."

  4. ALL this for a lousy news station. I for one stopped watching KRON when they got rid of George Rask. To hell with KRON. Its a joke of a news station. Its too bad that Stanley Roberts still works for these shitheads. I wish he would jump ship like so many others have already done. He's the only reason to watch KRON.

    1. SR, wish he would jump off a pier. What a D-Bag, folded arms, scowl. What a gimmick, oh and I'm "scared"...

  5. I think the final chapter on this is being written as we speak. Media General is a big, big TV company. This national embarrassment involving arguably their largest station won't stand. Breaking news coming...

  6. Methinks the shelf life of this "story" has expired. And I'm no fan of Radnich or KRON.

    1. I am with you....don't watch any KRON....why??? In the AM, I watch Norah O'Donnell, the gorgeous 42 YO CBS Anchor.

  7. If management there won't do their jobs, Media General is probably looking right now for people who will.

  8. It's very sad that one, no-talent, has-been announcer has that much weight. His train left the depot long ago. I know he reads these comments. Wake up you egotistical blow hard. Your sun has already set. Do the Bay Area a favor by jumping in your Bentley and going far, far away. Go to a place like Bozeman, Montana or Twin Falls, Idaho.

  10. Radnich is a classic example of a person with lots of power and no responsibility. A toxic mix.

  11. Radnich is a polarizing figure, no doubt. I grew up watching him and like many others, loved Sports Final. It was before you could get everything via SportsCenter or the Internet. It was solid.

But what used to be kind of "cool and casual, off the cuff" about Gary went away years ago. His stupid segments with Tony Bruno where they'd talk about Big Bands of years ago, his always taking digs at Kron, constantly turning towards anchors and others who are just doing what news people do, their jobs and making them uncomfortable got old a long time ago.

Obviously, he has some power over management at KRON because he's a complete jackass to people and also makes himself look like an ass. I don't watch much, but I turned it on the morning segment once and I think it's Gary on the phone in bed talking sports? WTF? Just stupid.

He also talks down to his callers. He's hosting a sports talk show, so he takes a call about sports, and then tells the person they need to worry about bigger things in life than sports, that family is what matters, etc. No kidding Gary, we get that dumbass. You host a sports talk show man, people listen to talk sports.

The whole video (wasn't hard to find if you search for it) is borderline creepy. I think Gary has just lost it. He kind of flew under the radar I imagine of this big corporate entity who owns KRON with management signing his praises and talking about him still being the king of the bay area. These guys must have watched the clip and thought, WTF?

I think Gary will be gone from KRON. And really who cares? Does anyone watch? Local news is dead and needs to be reinvented somehow.

  13. Gary Radnich does call the shots at KRON. We all knew that.
Media General has a weak management.
Radnich also controls the Chronicle. He has those writers wrapped around his little fingers.
