  1. Is it my imagination that Copie continually gets picked for situations which won't last? I recall him getting that short lived KGO TV afternoon show which went nowhere and no one thought it would last. This looks like another case of the same.

  2. Ethan Bearman used to be on Santa Cruz's KSCO and he was interesting and enjoyable, but then I heard him on KGO and he was like some other person, obnoxious and irritating. He's been on KGO lately, Saturday a.m. I think, and I would say "meh". I think he is ambitious and wants a radio career and is mimicking some of the successful, obnoxious radio personalities. I guess it worked. He probably works cheap and it's a step up for him.

  3. What's the over-under on Cumulus either brokering out KGO 24/7 to a foreign language broadcaster, or just turning in the license to the FCC? What a joke.

  4. If KGO will continue the talk format, why then was Ronn Owens let go? This seems rather strange.

    1. I agree? It doesn't make sense. Changes are strange.

    2. So what's the deal with the mumbo jumbo on KGO regarding "the new generation" with younger voices saying this and that with very annoying music? It doesn't sound like the line up is a new generation just a variation of some of the same plus Armstrong and Getty in the a.m. No news! That's the worst. The last change KGO made was because the claimed, listeners wanted more local news, which they did not. I'm still wondering what on earth is going on. Darn I wish smart people owned that strong radio signal.

  5. Personally, I think KGO would thrive with an all Murph and Mac lineup.

    1. They would do better with all Mac and Mutley.

  6. > 1-4 PM: "Brian Copeland"

He can't carry it that long. Anything more than a half hour of Copeland is tedious, and some would argue *any* Copeland is tedious.

He must have come awfully cheap.

    1. Look for Copeland to turn every topic into a race issue and how his experience as a black man relates.
... Yeah that will really draw in the young listeners...
Interesting how bootlickers stick around after Cumulus cleans house.

  8. Ronn is going up against Chip Franklin head to head.

Battle for who is less terrible.

    1. Amen. At least Ronn is intelligent and speaks gramatically correct English.

    2. Ronn's lost it, very boring show, he's mailing it in the last few years. I prefer Chip over him and that's not saying much.

  9. Amazing that Cumulus Media has managed to screw up KGO 810 formerly 30 years at #1

  10. I have other comments to make on the changes and the new line up, right now let me just say this: First Cumulus got rid of all the really good and successful hosts, and went to all news, except for a few exceptions. Slowly they added more talk, but not with anyone really talented (Chip, Drex, anyone remember Montemayor, a total lightweight and idiot) now they are getting rid of all news and going to all talk, adding some talent, keeping some not so talented hosts, how about a nice mix, the old KGO which was soo successful for so long was a nice mix, although they too made mistakes, remember Dr. Laura? I have the feeling that these guys don't know what they are doing, but then we knew that,

  11. When are you going to do a Q&A with all the ex KGO Hosts?

  12. I've heard of Armstrong and Getty, but never heard them. We'll see.

I've heard Ethan Bearman, but not for a long time, so I hold judgement.

I'm delighted that Brian has a regular program ... but, I hope he keeps "Headliners on the Headlines," to a minimum.

I grew to like Chip Franklin, so I'm happy he's still with the station ... however (alas, for Chip and Ronn) late afternoon/early evening is not my optimum radio listening day-part.

Drex? "April Fools," right??? Please, right??? If true, he MUST have something damning on the Dickeys.

    1. You won't like Armstrong and Getty. They are conservatives who think everything they say is funny and so "above the norm". They don't know what they're talking about half of the time.

      Delete
    2. I don't know anyone who listens to A&G, and I know a lot of people. After a few minutes, I have to change the channel.

  13. This is an April Fools joke right?

  14. How did that crap in the evening survive?

  15. So basically the new KGO kept three of its radio hosts, moved Ronn (how obvious), and never mentioned Pat Thurston or Maureen Langan (who improved immensely since the early days of her show). John Rothmann also got hosed... maybe not, as he is too bright for KGO in the first place. Sounds like everyone still on the air took pay cuts to hang on. I can barely listen to Copie on Sunday's now he is on five days a week. Drex a train wreck.

So this is what Cumulus calls the new and improved KGO? It's April 1st -- maybe Rich is fooling us?? Nah, only Cumulus could come up with this dreck.

  16. Laughter? No - makes me sick. I heard Owens. All about himself. Not one word about those good people that tried to make the news work. The people in the background, Wolcoff, Bristol, the reporters and I'm a fan of Jennifer Jones. Sometimes it was nice to hear her cheerful voice in the morning. She started out with some of the best in the business and she held her own. My best wishes to all of these people.

    BTW, See Len Tillem's youtube:
"If you get Fired, Take the Money and Run!"
    Yup, F@#$ KGO!

  17. Is this list for real? Is there a way I can REMOVE THE kgo option from my radio, as in removing garbage from my life???

Hacks, all of them. Or maybe I'm the problem. Alan Combs up the dial can be an irritating bore. Maybe I will try, good grief, Glen Beck or NPR.
Oh wait, I could try listening to baseball or roller derby.

    YUCK!!!!

  18. Would really have liked to see John Rothmann in the 7-10 slot.

    1. Pat or John would of been great in the 7 to 10 slot. Drex is horrible. Playing clips from TV shows all night is not good radio.

  19. The thing that Cumulus never understood is that KGO Radio was "social media" before there was such a thing as "social media." And terrestrial radio, despite what some say, is not dead. A radio still comes in every car, sometimes with satellite RADIO.

I don't work in the radio biz, so I don't know all of the ins and outs, but it is obvious that Cumulus completely screwed the pooch from beginning to end. It's like they wanted to KILL KGO, which was something like #1 in the country for decades. Who or why would anyone do that? I completely do not get it.

    1. They were #1 for 30 years then slipped to like #4 cuz of an aging demo. Just some tweaking here and there, they may of been okay. But NO, they had to go to mostly all news like KCBS and it blew up on them. Tried to bring talk back but their audience left in droves never to return, and they won't this time around either, not with this so-so lineup.

  20. Glad Copeland is on daily but would prefer him in the morning. There are plenty of white talking heads. If you can't stand him then imagine how it is to be black and read how Michael Savage is good radio despite his hateful rhetoric about nonwhites. It's refreshing to have a different perspective that reflects a difference experience. If one black man in a sea of white talk show hosts bothers you that much maybe the problem isn't Copeland.

    1. Copie's alright. The best in that dreadful lineup. I can just tolerate Chip

  21. Rich, you're right, this is a joke. Copie is a one-trick pony, he only wants to talk about race. That's going to wear thin 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Bearman was so bad they didn't want him on weekends on KSFO, so how did he land a weekday slot on KGO? Chip has been lackluster and boring from the beginning. Do they think that will change in the afternoon drive slot? This schedule looks a lot like Talk 910 does -- C and D level hosts in a cut-rate operation. No ratings.

  22. It could have been worse, and 8:05 I totally agree with you about Brian Copeland, besides despite what some bloggers here think, Brian does talk about other subjects, not just race, I don't see the problem, John Rothmann often approached subjects from the fact that he was Jewish, we cannot divorce ourselves from what we are. I was born and raised in Scandinavia and although I have lived in the US for many years, I often see things differently than my friends that was born and raised in the US. I too would have preferred Brian in the morning I often work late and have a long commute so often I get to hear the 9 to noon guy. I don't know if I'm going to like Ethan Bearman, when he first started on KSFO he was annoying as hell, elongating his words, always sounded like he talked down to his audience (i.e. you don't really understand so let intelligent me educate you) he seem to have gotten better, and seem to have toned down his right wing views since he moved from KSFO to KGO, but I haven't listened much, so maybe not.
Chip I can take or leave, don't dislike him, but rarely listen, usually I turn to Tom Sullivan on 1530 am, although he is conservative and I'm not. Use to listen to Armstrong and Getty, they can be very funny, sometime their stick wears a little thin, they can do some good interviews, but if I wanted to hear them I can get them on 650 am Sacramento, perhaps I will give Stephanie Miller a chance. Cannot believe they kept Drex, I too would have loved John Rothman in that spot. Mark Levin will still be on KSFO just from 6 to 0 p.m. they are dumping Glenn Beck, which might be a good thing, although I like how he picks Trump apart. As for other stations not much to choose from, say what you will about Ronn, but I could listen to him and even be entertained, today since it was either Rush or Gil and wife I chose Gil and Rhoda, but what an utter useless boring show, Gil interviews someone from Politico for about 15 minutes or so, and then it is Gil and wife, talking about nonsense, drawing out the subject to fill the time and yawn, yawn, what is sad that both Gil and Rhoda are well educated intelligent people, I remember when Gil was on KGO, he had a decent show most of the time, with callers and good subjects most of the time, not anymore, I can't listen for long.

  24. Drex?? Just give a microphone to any random 4 year old. It would be as poignant. --- Chip is like a slathering teenage boy with his over-animated, slurred speech. Chip can't finish 3 out of 4 sentences. Pontificates with NO IDEA what he's talking about. Useless.

  25. Will any women be allowed in the building? Secret male society masquerading as San Francisco radio stations? Whole thing a cover for no female employees?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why doesn't Ronn just quit? He's pushing 71. He's never working. After reading his fan base, they all think he's God. I was hoping he'd go to KSFO because I can't it here. With all his $$$ he could live a nice life. Sad.

  27. This boils down to lack respect and money. Reminds me of when US Business tried to sell product to Europe when there are 20+/- individual countries...and bombed. Same thing. Some non-Bay Area executive figures the station needed a shake up (again) and thinks they are mirroring the new high tech audience that has entered SF city limits. Also doesn't value wisdom...age...and local talent. Then needed to get the budget bottomline reduced...reformats, realigns and removes anything that makes more than minimum wage. In the end, a really good thing has been killed. I am over mad and the can't believe it stage to being really sad and depressed. It also brought back all my memories of the first slash...with Gene Burns (so delightful), Wattenberg, Greggins, etc. They all were my radio friends and helped me become a well rounded person. I hope everyone is will be okay...and off to bigger and better things.

  28. I'm always stunned that people get all stressed out when changes come to there favorite radio stations. The San Francisco talk radio market is one of the worst in the country, to manage. The majority of listeners lean center left. There's a whole bunch of left leaning radio personalities, with their obnoxious naive idealism, to choose from. Guess what? They can't make money for most radio stations. So it's no surprise that KGO keeps trying to re-invent the wheel. Armstrong and Getty are pretty popular in the Sacramento market, for obvious reasons. Doubtful it will work here. It's sad that Cumulus has to buy iheart talent for their stations. They can't find any national talent under there own umbrella, for KGO mornings? KSFO has it's own problems. The over rated KSFO Morning Zoo program should be put out to pasture. Dump re-runs of Beck and Hannity, and slide live programming such as John Batchelor in those slots. The golden days of local radio are gone. It's just a mess. There is just too many other important things to worry about. Everyday, I'm grateful for internet streaming. Regards.

  29. After the first bloodbath in 2011 I stopped listening to KGO for a couple of years but gradually I started to listen again and although I still missed the old format and Ray, Gene, John, Gil, and the others I came to enjoy Jennifer and Jon reporting in the mornings and to enjoying their banter with Rich Walcott and all of the other news and weather staffers. It was obvious that everyone worked well as a team and I liked all of them. I also listened to Ronn in the mornings and I relished his comedy hour with Brian and his 'up to 30' with the listeners. He had great guests on over years and I appreciated his politics and his take on things especially this year with the political circus going on. Whenever Ronn was gone or Chip was gone I liked hearing Pat, Maureen, and Christine when they came in to cover. All three are funny, smart and well informed.

That being said, there is NO WAY I will be listening to KGO again in the future since I refuse to listen to a station controlled by a company like Cumulus that has absolutely no regard for its talented staffers or its loyal listeners. I hope that Cumulus will be very, very, successful this time in completely ruining KGO and that they will finally get what they deserve. Hopefully listeners will tune out by the thousands and they will be left with nothing.

This morning was sad and strange for me because the first thing I always do in the morning is to turn on my radio and listen to Jon and Jennifer let me know whats gone on overnight as I enjoy my first cup of coffee. I really missed them today!
