KTVU Fox2: We Hate Older, Expensive Reporters; Sasaki Latest Victim; Vacar/Roth Looming; Donny and Marie on KGO Morning Creates Staff Division at 900 Front; Christin Ayers stays at PIX; Hottie LA NBC Anchor Gets 'Sexy' with Boss; Mark Thompson Still Itching To Come Back To Bay Area; Zika Virus Freaks out Aguirre; 415 Media Monday Open

The further dismantling of what was once a major asset to KTVU's vaunted news platforms continues with the ouster of senior reporter, John Sasaki, who was let go Friday and is now "pursuing other options."

Just comprehend those who have left the Channel 2 screen (some legitimately whether through retirement or buyout); what a list!

Rita Williams, Randy Shandobil, Lloyd LaCuesta, Roberta Handa (now at KNTV), Eric Rasmussen and Ken Pritchett were low-balled offers and split for other towns.

I'm leaving some out but you get the drift.

Bottom line: KTVU and Fox2 have no use for aging, expensive reporters. It's not in the handbook. Better to hire younger, CHEAPER, reporters who don't know the area and are more susceptible to making mistakes, THAT'S THE TICKET!

Tom Vacar, the Consumer Reporter, and GSA reporter, Rob Roth, are rumored to be on the current hit list because both are making too much money and both are middle-aged, a no-no for the Foxies.

We'll see. As I've said numerous times, Vacar happens to be a lawyer and even Fox is weary of a potential age-discrimination suit involving Tom, stay tuned.

*All the technical issues that have become regular irritations at KRON stem from a crappy Master Control set-up. Because it involves KRON, the daily irritants: shitty audio, regular off-the-air dead air periods, go unfixed and become a constant and nobody takes the bull by the horn and FIXES it! Wait a minute, did I say it's KRON! Boom goes the Dynamite!

Jessica Aguirre/NBC Bay Area
*Jessica Aguirre may say she's going to Rio (for the NBC Olympics), but she's clearly not thrilled about spending two weeks in mosquito-infested Brazil with a world-wide Zika virus that has sent fear and loathing all over South America

*Kenny Choi, the Hawaiian anchor who loves playing guitar, is set to begin anchoring KPIX's Morning Program, Tuesday. PIX suits hope his anchoring is better than his attempts to be Bruce Springsteen.

*The Donny and Marie Show at KGO-TV in the morning has begun to set forth a division between senior staff and the newbies.

Of course it would take a strong News Director or GM to rally the troops and ask for unity but neither of the characters at KGO have the ability nor the gumption to pull off such action; what a Mickey Mouse operation at Channel 7!

Christin Ayers staying at KPIX
*Christin Ayers appears to be staying at KPIX--CNN made no formal offer to her when it became apparent that Ayers had no interest in going to Atlanta.

CNN, which is enjoying record ratings (thanks Election '16) has been trying for years to snatch a few Bay Area TV reporter/hotties including Ayers and KRON's Justine Waldman.

*People in Los Angeles are talking about the hottie female anchor at the NBC 'O and O' who was seen ogling the fat GM at the Beverly Hills Hotel coffee shop. They were NOT talking about the quality of the raisin bread!

Oh, by the way, she's in a contract year and is negotiating for an extension. What a coincidence!

*Mark Thompson continues to pursue a Bay Area gig; the former KRON weather maven would love to spend his twilight years back in San Francisco but two thorny things exist: Thompson doesn't work cheap and no station is willing to dole out the big bucks.

Thompson too has the disadvantage of a Bay Area TV market suddenly run by a bunch of sycophantic idiots. That much is evident.

  1. Thompson is way too much of a social butterfly in LA to consider leaving. Plus he has way more radio listeners than he would have BA viewers.

    1. I was happy I didn't have to watch or listen to Thompson anymore when he went to L.A. And I'm reminded how annoying he sounds when I currently hear him on KFI.

He's a good friend of Ronn's, isn't he? Isn't his moving to L.A. what got Ronn to try to make it down south as well? Even so, please stay in L.A.!

  2. Add Kenny Choi to the list of younger and not from the area. Let's see how many mistakes he makes...

    1. He did the Noon news today - and could smile a bit more but otherwise was very smooth and professional.

    2. Hawaii Five O is nothing special. I don't think he make KPIX morning rating move at all. ABC7 at least the Romper Room in the morning is an attempt to be different.

    3. Kenny's OK but Frank Mallicoat got screwed. Change just for the sake of change won't improve ratings

  3. Who is the blonde cutie near the end? Don't recognize her, but if she's KNTV I rarely watch that station.

    1. I think she is Courtney Friel from KTLA in Los Angeles. KTLA is currently owned by Tribune Media is is one of the oldest television stations in the country.

    2. Yeah, definitely Courtney Friel.

    3. I was smitten, and yes, it is she:
The Hottest Women News Anchor is Courtney Friel an American reporter for KTTV. She started her career as a sports anchor for Mobile Television hosted the show for the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel then she joined Fox News Channel in 2007. Her way of talking and expressions gave her great popularity. She now works for KTLA.

    4. Why can't we have somebody like Courtney here in the Bay Area?

    5. There is only one guy on the this board who has a chance with all these hottties on TV. ME. But I am happy married with a couple kids.

The wife is going to be 42 in October looks 32 and just got carded the other night. The waitress said omg your 42 I have to buy you your drink!!

      Life is good!!

    7. That's Courtney Friel, the little girl from Philadelphia. She is an absolute knockout who just got divorced. I wonder what happened.

  4. I watched KTVU at 7AM, 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 10 PM every day for 14 years. I stopped watching when Tori Campbell left. I still think she wasn't offered a new contract and left when her current contract expired.

  5. Rita Williams, Randy Shandobil, Lloyd LaCuesta, Roberta Handa, Eric Rasmussen and Ken Pritchett were low-balled offers...

So KTVU should pay them more than they're worth. They are supposed to be guaranteed employment for life.

  6. There may be even more trouble ahead for field reporters at KTVU. In Philadelphia at the Fox O&O there, they've been trying a concept of viewer/reporters instead of paid people to send to the field. I understand that these viewers send to the station phone pix or videos of events, and some even describe a situation to some extent. An event is covered at almost no cost to the station. I also understand that brass in Philly seem to feel the idea is working, and Fox is going to extend this idea to other markets. I would think that would mean even more reporter layoffs ahead, if they extend the idea to KTVU.

    1. They are already starting to push their "report and get paid" app on KTVU.

  7. We wouldn't be seeing these cost-cutting layoffs is the economy was all as fantastic as Obama supporters would have us believe. Hopefully, everyone can make it to January 20 without any further blood letting. Have never seen anything like it in my lifetime and the Jimmy Carter years really sucked.

    1. That's right, blame Obama. Media cost-cutting is the result of corporate ownership overextending themselves financially through acquisitions, and trying to find relief from the debt load by cutting personnel and costs. It has nothing at all to do with whomever is in the White House. Whatta jackass.

    2. My wife left me for another woman! Damn that Obama had something to do with it...I just know it!

      Delete
    3. Not necessarily. The corporate model is to cut costs wherever they can. Read Wall Fly's post above. If they could save money by having nonprofessionals cover stories with their grainy phone images, they'll do it.

  15. With reference to KTVU I have to wonder how Pam Cook will come out of all of this. I like Pam a lot but can't but help notice she is gone a lot. I had not heard Tory was not offered a new contract. Considering Pam I believe quit at one time to be with her family and was apparently coaxed back by Cox back then I merely thought it was something they had worked out for as a busy mom. With the new Fox management I wonder how they will deal with this situation.

For me Pam Cook, Diane Dwyer, and Jess at KNTV are amongst the best. Diane retired a year ago, Pam and Jess are still going. There are few who are their equals with the influx of unqualified kids filling in the ranks but in Pam's case I wonder how long it will last with her frequent absences?

KNTV seems to value their talent more than the others and is as close as we come to doing investigative journalism on TV these days. I believe Pam does exceptionally well in the AM ratings so if Fox was stupid and she was let go she could land at another venue easily if she did not want to retire after all of these years.

  18. You first have to attract P/F 25-54 rating points in order to sell P/F 25-54 rating points. Unless you've got a line out the door of advertisers wanting to reach the F55+ demo, then radical change is needed.
