415 Media Source: 'Live 105' Days Numbered as CBS Begins Transformation; Format Change Likely

"We're all gonna get fired," laments a staffer at SF CBS FM Alt "Live 105" (KITS) Indeed, the rumor mill has begun that CBS (which is on the "For Sale" block) is trimming personnel at its various stations, including KITS, and eventually, KCBS.

What becomes of KITS future format, nobody knows now, but I've heard everything, including sports.

Live 105 is somewhat of a legacy station in the city's rich tradition of FM Alternative outlets but even those are losing listeners in this increasingly digital/satellite era.

    1. As long as KGO bursts into flames, I'm ok with it.

  2. I for one feel that the bloated FM dial could be used for live ESL classes to educate our growing Hispanic and immigrant population.
Too many times I have seen children struggle with Spanish when we could just devote a few under performing stations to a very good cause...our children.

  3. I gave up listening to local music radio about five years ago. My problem with the stations is repetitive play of a very small play list when there was so much good music out there... Not saying Sirius/XM is any better they repeat a small play list over and over too. At least in the car there are more channels to choose from and at home I have a 16,000 channel internet radio (not iheart or Pandora which are only subsets of it). So I don't need local music radio any longer sorry to say. I started getting bored with local radio back when KFRC played the Bee gees over and over to the point they were driving people crazy (I still can't stand them all of these years later).

  4. Worst than bad programing is way too many commercials. That's the main reason I don't listen to radio.

  5. Wont be sports although cbs wants a sports station in the Bay. Can't get one though. Two other stations already. They could syndicate the entire CBS Sports programming for nothing which would mean Cumulus would have to partner with ESPN radio on 1050. All told this won't happen. Whatever it is there will be automation and syndication of course

    1. Actually technically there are three sports stations in SF. KNBR 680 with its separate programming, KNBR 1050 with its separate programming and KGMZ 95.7 with its programming. And you are correct it. Cumulus will not give up the CBS sports programming under what I think is a national agreement, unless the agreement is terminated by CBS. Again, unlikely unless the revenue is upside down for CBS based on Cumulus sales performance. Maybe there is room for a news (and maybe talk format) station or if Bloomberg moves to the frequency from iheart. All speculation on my part but carefully considered. KCBS is doing well in revenue/ratings and must grow its revenue. KGO seems to be on a feeding tube so there is an opportunity and advantage.

  7. It would not be the "great loss" it would have been 20 years ago. Aside from late night sonisphere and some weekend programming, Live 105 ain't the station it was in its heyday of the late 80s/early 90s.

  8. Take The Bone with you while you are at it. Radio, like others here have said is just boring. The same 100 songs over and over and over again. I too stopped listening to alot of radio. So adios live 105, see ya.

  9. Bummer. The alternative rock they play is not heard on any other station in the area. They serve a niche, albeit a dwindling one (changing Bay Area demographics is partly driving the decline). Agree, the repetitive playlist makes listening tough these days. Back in the day with Alex Bennett in the mornings, it was the cool station to hang with.

  10. Yep they both stink. How many fucking times do we have to hear Allie on Live 105 say she is a lesbian. She is Kate Scott 2.0. Who gives a fuck you like to lick girls. I have seen girls lick girls, Hell I even got in on it a few times.

Chasta on 107.7 is our home girl. Way to represent the 94044!

  13. seems to me, radio 'post internet' serves almost no purpose. Everyone's fondest memories of LIVE 105 are pre world wide web

  14. Maybe Live 105 will flip to MOR and adopt the KLOK call letters!

  15. Being a fan of earlier "Rock of the 80s" stations (including The Quake) that quickly failed, I was a HUGE fan of Live 105 which managed to get the format right and succeed. They had an AWFUL signal though and I bought a lot of equipment just to be able to pick them up. They haven't been what they used to be in a LONG time however, grunge pretty much ruined the format as the same thing happened to KROQ in Los Angeles. Last time I tuned in Live 105 I immediately tuned out as they were playing a 90s grunge song I'd already heard a billion times. I couldn't believe it when I heard they were airing football games too- that has NO place on ANY music station! I've been expecting Live 105 to fold for a while now, just hope they can try something new and different with whatever replaces it.
