The Nasty News That Involves The Owners of Tadich Grill --My Favorite SF Restaurant Takes a Massive Hit on Social Register

Some of you may have read this--others may have not. In the grand scheme of life, this is not the biggest story of the day but a story nonetheless --enough teeth in it at least two readers sent me the link and my reaction.

I love Tadich Grill  Have written as much and still do but I'm feeling a lot less love now that I've read about the family and abandonment involving a family member.

Seems I'm not alone.

The most PC-thing to do is to say hell with all this in-house business (and much of it, no matter how onerous it is and it really is, has nothing to do with going inside the house and eating the food) Lord knows we don't know how many individual or family-owned businesses possess lizards in the pool. It's sometimes best to intentionally stay away from the owners or to get too close, there's a price to pay sometimes.

By bringing all this up immediately elevates the story; then again the Washington Post thought it was big enough to devote a thousand or so words so maybe there's merit. I'm still weighing in on all of it.

  1. If it was up to me, I'd rename it the Tard Grill & put Tardnich as the line cook & Krueger as dishwasher. F You, whiners.

  2. I saw mention of this in today's Chron, but didn't have time to read the story. I don't know how a restaurant can survive that kinda bad PR unless their clientele doesn't ever hear of the story. I wonder if any of their workers are minorities?

    1. I have been going there for years (no longer, sad really. I'll miss the sand dabs, cioppino, chowder and bread, etc.) and now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing a person of color employed there.

  6. 4:38pm...they've been running a restaurant for decades in San Francisco and you ask if they've had minority workers?

Speaking of assumptions...Quite an assumption on the WaPo's to tie the enmity to racism. Maybe they didn't like a fornicator making the moves on their 23 year old daughter? That bit is just as true as the family being rather cold afterward.

The article seems bent on destroying their business. So they're potential racist who became cold-blooded with a daughter of theirs. Alrighty then...how good is that Lobster bisque? I'll show up and order if its THAT good and run the risk of guilt by association by the leap of judgement libprogtards that think they can run roughshod over anything that smells like the R word.

"Maybe they didn't like a fornicator making the moves on their 23 year old daughter?"

"Fornicator"? You're a few centuries behind and perhaps that might explain why you weren't able to comprehend the story which is that this woman's family continues to disown her--as well as her bi-racial offspring--because she married a Black guy. If you want to continue patronizing a place run by people whose values are tainted by racism and hate, that's certainly your right.

    3. That's they're prerogative and yours is to stop eating there if you ever have.

Beyond that, you'd be just as hateful as they.

and...lemme guess...you're just fine with the REI in Santa Rosa letting pervs walk into the women's bathroom's when a child is using it?

Where's the outrage for that from you pristine pretenders?

  7. "Family matters" are very difficult for outsiders to fairly evaluate because of all the dynamics that can be involved. That said it is a free country and the owners of Tadich Grill can think and believe whatever they wish as long as they don't discriminate in their business practices.

  8. Not a problem for me. I know that some black families have not taken it well when their children marry a white or latin person. Human nature.

I'll have a bloody mary, sourdough, and a filet mignon.

    1. Cool story, bro. You're an ignorant douche who lives in the past. You must love it when Rich posts those old videos of former Newscasters.

The owners of Tadich can think and do whatever they want to. But when that becomes public the consumers have a right to make up their minds. Surely, some backward ass racist/homophone/xenophone clown types will populate the restaurant in support of their beliefs. But eventually those people, more often than not lacking the purchasing power, will fade into the distance, back over to Chick-Fil-A. Meanwhile, the views of the owners will remain, and Bay Area folk will stop frequenting the place, forcing them to rely on tourists (which they do), and guys like Rich, who pine for yesteryear. Hey, Maybe the good Doc will even foot the bill.

All told, within 5 years these restaurants will be gone, and good riddance to them.

After all, if this country wants to base itself on the idea that unbridled Capitalism is the end all/be all governing principle of a society, then the people of the Bay should let it be known that through it they won't stand for these types of dated viewpoints, especially in a progressive part of the world like this one.

Tadich Grill, "leading from behind", as the Douche-class likes to say.

    2. The closest Chik Fil A is located in Walnut Creek - I don't think that your Tadich regular is going to go there.

Sorry to burst your bubble david w but this isn't going to impact Tadich in the long run. Sure there might be a liberal knee-jerk reaction in the first few weeks and some folks who probably never even enjoyed a meal at Tadich might show up with some signs and protest but like most things in SF it will die off. This will happen for several reasons. First off the techies don't really care - sure they might be "outraged" but over time they will find something else to occupy their attention - isn't there a new Star Wars movie coming out soon? B. - this place has been around for over a 100 years. It's part of SF, like it or not. Generations have been eating there and they know the staff and have their favorite items. They might have some negative comments and it will actually work in the staffs favor as tips might get bigger to offset their "liberal guilt" but the Olympic Club crowd isn't going anywhere. Finally there's what I call the "BART effect". While the Bay Area may seem "progressive", open minded and super lefty - and some folks are - it only goes so far. Many are happy to help people of color and the oppressed but they sure don't want them moving in next door. Most of you probably won't remember but when BART was being voted on the residents of Marin County opposed having a low cost train that would provide a direct route from Oakland to San Rafael - wonder why? Look at the latest development in George Lucas' ongoing battle with the Marin Planning Commission. He was refused permission to expand his production company so what does he do? He decided to get back at the wealthy Marinites by turning that land into "affordable housing". Revenge of the Jedi! If the Marin community was truly a welcoming group of pot smoking hot tubbing liberals they'd welcome this but it is not so. It's the NIMBY factor.

As for me I like Tadich - not as much as I like Johns Grill - so I will continue to eat there. It's not like they have separate lunch counters for people of color and as far as I'm concerned family matters are exactly that. I don't care if they spank little Johnny - I'm not giving up the clam Chowder and Sand Dabs!

      Call be a d-bag, backwards...whatever. At least I'm not a sheep.

    3. i'm with David in that I would never go there again. So many restaurants in the Bay Area as soon as Bauer and others start to discuss it I think the restaurant will lose customers. Maybe the tourists keep it going but I'm guessing a lot of locals will dine elsewhere. The bigger question is whether the DC one succeeds in light of the political culture because it's it's not supported by the local politicians and lobbyists then it probably won't thrive.

    4. "It's not like they have separate lunch counters for people of color..."

Based on their racist views, they probably would were it not for that pesky little piece of legislation known as the Civil Rights Act of '64.
Don't act as though the separate counters aren't there by choice.

    5. 10:00, well said.

It's amazing how David W gets straight to the personal insults just based on a two-three sentence post where I didn't deride any races. Apparently one can have freedom of thought in David's world only if one agrees with him...

    6. David W, are you going to stop doing business with people who own rap "music" labels, in which the "n" word is constantly used? Because that's racist.

Nah...the vast majority of African Americans openly welcome other races into their families, with open arms...

    I know... I have a White/Black Niece, a Black/Mexican Nephew, former Mexican, & White Sister-In-Laws, and I also have a White Auntie...

    3. The vast majority doesn't include each and every African American, does it? Just like the vast majority of European-descended Americans are not any more racist than Africans. Just because one family is in the news because of this, doesn't mean all white folks think like the folks in the story here, nor does the fact that a fair amount of African American males shoot each other mean that all Afrcian Americans (or even the majority of them) shoot each other...

  10. 6:13, completely agree, family stuff is so hard when you're not part of it. We're just hearing one side and who knows where the truth sits. If it's true, and the family is comprised of a bunch of terrible racists, then of course it deserves this kind of bad press. But I imagine there's another side to the story that we will hear soon.

Also, things are different in 2015 than they were years ago, even if there is a part of this that is true, not everyone was enlightened back then.

Her side just sounds way too absurd to be completely true. How can you have a thriving family business without some kind of soul and kindness? Especially a business like that.

I've never been there and have no connection to anyone in this, but it just seems to be only part of the story.

  11. This is an outrage, I won't eat there.

If it had been a latino husband tho I'd be there Saturday for lunch.

  12. This is more common than you would think: Seen where Croatians don't like non-Croations, certainly religions don't want people outside of their religion marrying outside of their religion.

Tom Cruise for example, certainly wouldn't marry someone outside of Scientology. People still go see his movies.

You just have to ask yourself "is this enough for me to stop giving them my business".

To me, it's a family and not a professional bias so I'd still eat there.
