Carla Marinucci, the star political reporter, is leaving the Chronicle and is headed to Politico.
Marinucci will write the "California Playbook" --essentially what she's been writing for the Chron, but now, the political media Internet heavyweight, Politico.
Marinucci leaves a void at the SF daily. Her state political reporting has been a mainstay in the Bay Area for over two decades.
This is the second big byline departure for the Chron--crime reporter, Henry Lee, recently left to become same for KTVU.
A "Star Political Reporter" ?
ReplyDeleteExcept for the fact that she is based in San Francisco what stories that she has covered made her a star???
She sure as hell has not broken anything major or controversial. She tows the liberal line...
No big whoop.
Dear 8:31...Carla Marinucci is brilliant, well-connected, a terrific writer and political reporter. Politico has made a great hire. Your knowledge of her reporting and insight over many years is just puny. I'm delighted that an even broader audience will enjoy her work, and just in time for the most interesting political season ever!
DeleteMarinucci is a great reporter.
DeleteThe implied criticism based on whether she's " broken anything major or controversial," indicates total ignorance about reporting and journalism.
Most interesting? How many have you actually paid attention to?
DeleteThank You, Christine, O Wise & Knowledgeable Media Muckraker, for your worshipful statement on someone most people don't give a damn about...like you, for instance.
DeleteDear John...I've known Carla for many years. I often had her as a guest when I anchored KQED's "This Week in Northern California". Why would I have been delighted to do that? Well, if you want to know what's happening behind the scenes in California politics(right , left, and undetermined), you go to someone who knows the subject in detail. Carla has frequently been a guest on Ronn's shows as well as others of us at KGO. Not only is she knowledgeable, but she has an engaging style both on television and radio. I think you just despise excellence.
Deletedear anon at 1:43....hmmmm, you ask how many I have "actually paid attention to(sic)". Let's see, how many would that be? Taking just the highlights, I anchored CTV(Convention Television) for the Democratic party in 1984 (Moscone Center), traveled the nation as a surrogate for the Gary Hart campaign, did debates and dialogues with Senator Hart at Drake U in Iowa( an important primary state, you know, testified in front of a congressional subcomittee at the invitation of congresswoman Pat Schroeder, on the issues of pat inequity for American women, was courted to run for Congress by the DCC( you know what that is, right?)in my home district of Santa Barbara. Did you want more?
DeleteChristine, I agree with you you that Carla is an excellent reporter BUT for chrissakes can you please learn to keep your mouth shut for once and not make the conversation about YOU.
DeleteYou do more harm then good to whatever argument you are trying to make by inserting yourself in a disagreeable way that offends everyone.
You are not the "determiner" of what I think or of what I say. You also, despite your illusions of grandeur, do not speak for everyone. I was directly challenged by one poster who said I didn't care about Carla. Another questioned if I had any experience in the political world. I merely answered both queries. I think your anonymous and cowardly attacks on me for correcting the record are curious, at best. If you are so delicate that you can't bear to read what I write, then note the name and curb your desire to get all flummoxed. Just move on and don't let your wittle self get "offended", or your feelers hurt.
DeleteChristine, you like to correct people for the most minor spelling error or mistake, here is one for you.
DeleteIt is "delusions of grandeur" not
"illusions of grandeur". Was this a Freudian slip?
5:16...."delusions of grandeur" and "illusions of grandeur" are not the same thing. Both are neither "errors", "mistakes", nor have "spelling" problems.
DeleteI won't be shocked if the highly esteemed wine critic Jon Bonne also leaves the Chronicle soon. As a wine aficionado it has been tough to see the wine section deteriorate over the last few years. On a separate note: Dick, what is your take on Boehner's resignation? We need your voice on KSCO man. Your invaluable analysis and insights on politics is needed on air. We are tired of hacks like Charles Freedman and Georgia. Save us baby!
ReplyDeleteWill Henry have to wear an eye patch and start each report with, "Arrgh"?
ReplyDeleteSo will Marinucci still be doing her stuff on KQED or does her Politico deal prevent/preclude that? Or her maybe her Politico presence will open the door to further TV/media opportunities and she'll be living large beyond being on the "farm" team in SF.
ReplyDeleteHUGE loss for the Chron. Didn't hear about Henry K. Lee, that's a big loss too. The ship be sinking over there on 5th Street.
ReplyDeleteFrom one liberal rag to another. Next.
ReplyDelete@1:43
DeletePolitico's been described as many things but a "liberal rag" isn't one of them. Try to keep up.
A simple google search will give you multiple instances where they were referred to as a "liberal rag". I think you meant to type "trying to keep up" as in you were trying to keep up...but typo'd.
DeleteAnon@1:43 believes that both Politico and the Chronicle are "liberal rags." He/she is right to the extent that both require the ability to read, not necessarily something all his right-wing pals have mastered.
DeleteBoth require the ability to read which eliminate many of the right-wing's most fervent
For 'liberal rags' they sure do get a lot lunatic frothing at the mouth illiterate wingnut trolls in the comment sections...no matter what the topic happens to be.
DeleteWay to censor the comments on this one, Rich. Let the libdiots have their say. Here's hoping you give the other side a chance in the near future (let more comments through).
DeleteJust another example of how the web is over taking the traditional print media.
ReplyDeleteThe only people who do not understand this wave are the Chronicle and the editors at the San Jose Monkey News.
They do indeed understand it. What do you want them to do?
DeleteThey also understand that "overtaking" is one word.
Also an example of how the web is replacing local radio and television news which is why local tv and radio has diminished in importance.
ReplyDeleteTime to accept these changes and stop complaining about them,
The #1 local radio talk show in the country regularly rips her stories apart...so congrats to her.
ReplyDeleteThe Chronicle. Didn't that used to be a newspaper?
ReplyDeleteYup. Still great for mopping up spills, however.
DeleteGood riddance. She is a political hack and most of her writing is propaganda for whichever politicians happen to be in power at the moment Check this for yourself - for example when Gavin Newsom originally looked to be the favorite for CA governor, she called Jerry Brown too old but when Brown looked to be the front runner she switched her tune to calling him experienced. Might as well just print the press releases anyway.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this just another 415 Media story intended to lament the deterioration of local media institutions?
ReplyDeleteHow about mentioning that the Chronicles loss is KTVU's gain in the case of Henry Lee. And fans of Marinucci can follow her on Politico.
The internet is replacing local news outlets in distributing news. Some oldsters are a little slow in figuring that out.
Rich just gave her a free ad. What more can ya ask for.
ReplyDeleteWOOP-DEE effiing dooo! Who cares about some used up hack-jounalist whom no one reads anymore? This column is a waste of your time Rich. Let's have more dish from you about local radio and TV! I especially enjoy your columns about the hot chicks on local TV. At least there's some interest there!
