The Best Overnight Radio Anchors; KCBS' Evans And Chiaroni; Smart And Final Art Finley; Marcia Brandwynne Made Terilyn Joe Seem Like Mary Poppins; Saturday Heat Wavers

 SATURDAY HEAT WAVERS

There's something serene about overnight radio news anchors--we've had, and currently have some of the best here--including, KCBS stalwarts, John Evans and Larry Chiaroni. I also was a big fan of Dean Danos before he was given the axe last year.

The overnight anchor is supposed to exude a calm presence and be ready when a big news event exists; I recall just that very precise situation when the Napa earthquake struck almost a year ago. Danos' steady demeanor that early morning was first rate. -- Evans is superb and knows how to command a microphone; reminds me a lot of the late Bob Donnely, who manned many overnights in the 70's for KCBS. And Chiaroni keeps it moving all the time; one of the best.

--I said Larry Olson was occasionally funny --OK, so he isn't Wynne Elliot --but when he did the sports on the weekend KGO news, it worked sometimes--and didn't other times. Relax people. By the way, Olson co-hosts with Melanie Morgan on the M-F Morning Show on the Northbay's  KSRO 1350 AM and FM 103.5

--Mayor Art Finley had that unique radio element: funny, stubborn, smart as a whip and sarcastic with just enough edge to keep you glued to the radio. Oh, and he didn't need any stupid sound effects which currently pollute the airwaves. My first exposure to Art was when he was the 7-10 PM talk-show host on KGO in the 70's and mid 80's. Boy could that guy do a first-rate interview! Do rest in peace, Art.

--Old KGO great names: Larry Doyle, Bob Trebor, Monte Stickles, Gregg Jordan, Al Jazzbeaux Collins.

--Hey, Mike Pechner, how hot is it gonna be this weekend?

--The UC Berkeley radio station, KALX-FM (90.7): weirdly unique and interesting--especially if you want to hear Emerson, Lake and Palmer in the middle of an otherwise bland Friday.

--Dan Rosenheim KRON sports-anchor symmetry into PIX: Dennis O'Donnell and Vern Glenn. Mediocrity at its finest.

--Hey, given the current crop of female anchors here, Terilyn Joe wouldn't be all that bad.

--Marcia Brandwynne made Terilyn Joe seem like Mary Poppins.

--Jason Applebaum, don't look now but you're making Joe Fonzi nervous.

--"I'MMMMMMMMM KRISSSTIN HAYNES--KGO 810" (Modest gal)

--I'm not a misogynist I just think most of the women talent here on TV and radio suck. There's always exceptions and those who know me know why.

--Liz Cook is two weeks away from the big day.

--My inner source tells me that after a couple of Corona's Allie Rasmus would be a hoot.

--Debra Saunders, conservative columnist for the Chronicle, if you were just ten years younger, I'd have a commonwealth with you at the Commonwealth. Dammit, you're married. OK, I'll call Beth Spotswood.

--Gotta go now, I'm going to the mud baths with Pia Zadora.

    1. Why is that name familiar?

    2. Because Rich called her a "moronic bimbo"

If you heard her on radio you might agree.

What happened to Weintraub? He went off quietly into the night. Not even doing a shitty podcast like the Red Carpet Diva! Or maybe he is?

  2. Emerson, Lake and Palmer: Still, they turn me on!

  3. Dear Terilyn: Stop throwing things at me & calling me names. I don't call you names like Hunan Kitchen Lady, so I expect the same. Thank You. Sincerely, Pedro

  4. Regarding Larry Olson: Olson was a typical local nobody but once he gets fired, Rich Lieberman suddenly becomes a big fan. Come on Rich, if Olson was still at KGO you wouldn't have a single kind word for him.

  5. Beth Spotswood would be a great catch. On a one to ten, she is a 19. She is very kind and very funny.

  10. Stickles was a great old 49er name, too. LIke Wayne Walker, Stickles was a badass on the field.

  11. "Krisssssten Haynes," does have a most annoying sign-off. Otherwise, she's a decent reporter. The body of her reports don't have that nasality that screams: "I need an adenoidectomy."

She has to be doing it for effect.

  12. Ho Hum. All the greats are gone (KGO) and they ain't never coming back.

  13. GET RID .... of that Texas traffic babbler known as "Mary Rose" on KGO.

I can see why a low power school district radio station beats them in the ratings.
    So sad.

  14. I have enjoyed hearing Pat Thurston filling in on KGO for Drex. While not as good as some of the old KGO hosts during weeknights, she is such a relief from the lame banter that now normally fills that time slot. She has had some good guests and callers. And a single host without a goofy/snarky sidekick works much better.

I am curious if anyone else noticed some hostility toward Pat late this week from John Lobertini? For example, when Pat said referring to Hillary Clinton as "Mrs. Clinton" was insulting, Lobertini gleefully referred to Clinton as "Mrs. Clinton" during news stories, and he introduced Pat as Maureen Langan then was defensive with a note of hostility when Pat called him out on it.

    2. Pat Thurston is way above most hosts that are on the airways these days. True she is no Gene Burns, or John Rothmann, and although I'm a liberal, at times she is too liberal for me, but then I'm not looking for a host who mirrors my views, I listen to Tom Sullivan several times a week, and he is pretty conservative, but I like his show, and his personality, I don't have to agree with him. As for the lame banter that seem to be what most program directors think we want to hear. How about Joel and Corey on 910, Spencer Hughes who is on 910 no longer takes calls or very few, instead he talk mostly about himself, and his ideas, as does Joel and Corey. What happened to the idea that an interviewer or talk show host, after setting up the argument, then it is all about the guest or callers? Think Gene Burns, John Rothmann, or on TV Larry King or Johnny Carson? Is this because we are becoming of a me generation? I'm a baby boomer, and we are often accused of being self absorbed, but we were, still are interested, in hearing others opinions. Listening to Joel and Corey, Drex and Spencer talking about themselves and their lives is boring, unless you're exceptional or have an exceptional life (ex president, explorer, writer (Norman Mailer, Hemingway) your life is not that interesting, it pretty much resembles, most of the listeners life, and who wants to listen to the trials and tribulations of someone whose life is similar to yours? We, or at least I, and I believe many other listeners turn into a show, to be informed, entertained and probably also to escape, escape from work, traffic (which is were I often listen to talk show host) and there just is not that much of a choice these days.

    3. Even tho I disagree with Pat in regards to her politics, there's something about Pat that I find very sexy.

    4. The hosts on talk 910 are completely uninteresting. This spencer guy is an utter bore. I totally agree. He doesn't take calls and talks about his own boring life. Every time I hear him talk he says "I was born here....I have 6 kids..." NO ONE CARES! YOU'RE NOT AN INTERESTING PERSON OR STORY TELLER.

Cory and Joel is a completely useless radio show.

I've never liked Rothmann but he's better than what is available. Not saying much.

Drex is really bad too. Worse than him is that woman Heather. Who in the world put her on the air?

I can't believe this is the state of Bay Area radio.

  15. I seem to remember Marcia Brandwyne in southern California when I was a kid. Didn't like her. I preferred Christine Lund back then.

    1. Ah, Christine Lund. I'd forgotten her.

Now, the memory that comes flooding back, is of her crouching behind a car, as she reported from the scene of the burning house, in LA, that ended the lives of many members of the SLA ... Patty Hearst, not among them.

  18. Brandwynne was fired a few times in LA, no?

  19. Larry Olson is a wannabe. A tool. And a narcissist. He's been in the business for years and years, yet his big-time credits are "college" in Reno, doing "traffic", a morning gig on a 5000-watt AM in Podunk, and now getting fired from the worst radio station in America. Oh, and he's never been funny. (From someone who worked with the tard).

  20. For those of us of a certain age, Mayor Art (Art Finley) was one of the first TV shows we watched. In the early '60s, he hosted a daily kids show each afternoon on KRON. One of the pioneers of live, local TV for kids.

    1. Yes, Bay Area radio. Specifically Pat Thurston (as is the topic of that string of comments).

    2. Thanks for the compliment and critic. Reading my comments I can see I could have done a better job of editing it. English is my second language, and I never had much formal instruction in English. Also I wrote the comments after a long tiring day at work. However, you seem to get what I was trying to convey, and that is really, to me, the most important thing.

    3. Oh no, your comment was fine. I wasn't being mean, just trying to answer your question for you :) . And yes, we were talking about Pat Thurston. Some of us find her sexy etc etc :) Well, at least 1 of us.
