KGO Radio Cans Weekend Sports; Weekend News Probably Next; Bye Bye Olson And Macgowan

KGO Radio has done away with weekend sports news as both Larry Olson and Bruce Macgowan were let go last week. No surprise there and really no surprise as to what's coming.

My various broadcast sources say that KGO's weekend news is next to go, then probably in the next few months, the weekday afternoon news will be eliminated.

KGO's ratings keep on dwindling down --the talk-news hybrid will be taking the place of "news and information." And be ready for more of those taped financial and real-estate shows. Aw, Cumulus, gotta love ya.

The official end to one of the greatest radio stations ever is in progress.

  1. They should nickname KGO the "Pat Vitucci Station", with all the financial horseshit they've got playing now or in the future. Manage this, Bitch!!

  2. Please keep us posted when the broadcast antenna, office furniture and equipment, office supplies and other assets will be auctioned.

  4. Just wait until Cum-U-Less buys CBS radio. Ratings don't matter, it's all about the bottom line at the time of the sale.

  5. After the 9er wrapup last night Krueger was pushing the John Batchelor show. News then 20 minutes of that syndicated overnite show the name escapes me then all of a sudden John Batchelor comes on around 1020...amateur hour.

    1. "Red Eye Radio"? The show is live 10pm-3am PT on Westwood One. KSFO plays it midnight to 3am (don't know if live or delayed).

  6. Is there anyone who could seriously buy KGO and do something with it...is it even a good investment?

  7. Talk-News hybrid in Mandarin. Within one year. Guaranteed, or my name isn't "Anonymoose".

    1. I don't know if I would go as far as guaranteeing it, but I think that's a very real possibility.

  8. KGO should just go away. It is one of the most irrelevant radio stations around. They were irrelevant before they let go of those sports yakkers.

  10. So sad to see/hear what KGO has become. I could use a lot of strong words but
"an absolute mess" is what I will say. For those of us who were loyal listeners 24 hours a day, it is by by baby!! I am so sorry for all of the real talet they have sent away or "killed". It was once the best and now it is the worst of the worst.

  11. KGO would be bought in a second by a sports signal.

  12. Rich, please do us a big favor and direct us to the stations that will do talk radio like it is supposed to be done. This is election season is just beginning and we will need to hear some real information and discussion

    1. Give KMJ out of Fresno a try. 580AM over-the-air (I get it reasonably clear in my car here in the north bay) or www.KMJNow.com. Their 9-11am duo is not the greatest...he's apparently a local legend who is a little long-in-the-tooth and the woman he's paired with seems to simply recite general "right" talking points, and not with a lot of conviction. But their mid-day and afternoon guys are both good. Generally "right" politically, but not whack-jobs. When they get on super local issues, which they do occasionally I tune out because I simply don't know what they're talking about, but usually their topics are fairly general. And, it is fun to hear ads for raisin crop insurance!

    2. That's because Jay B. the SAC PD has a clue. Smart guy and has some autonomy. He should be taking over somewhere in the Bay Area.

  13. How could one of the best sports guys around, Bruce MacGowan be let go and subpar Rich Walcoff still be there? It does not make any sense.

  14. I was surprised to hear on both Saturday and Sunday, at random times, a Purity Products infomercial - they are paying time broker stations a whopping $125 net per 28:30.

  15. Is it any wonder cumulus stock is at an all time low of 1.27? If they are only interested in the bottom line then they are failing on that front too. I was also one of those who tuned to kgo 24/7 when it was good. I tried listening on weekends after the mass firings but even they've destroyed that and I hardly tune in anymore. Glad to see that even that lunatic David Weintraub stopped posting here his idiotic idea that he is supposed to be the lord and savior of kgo.

    1. Anyone who cares about the station, and David did, was not happy to see him go. A lot of people blame Ronn for being a coward? David stood up to Ronn. Then there was Crazy Renee who had him fired for going to HR over her. He should have sued the pants off of Cumulus and I wouldn't be surprised if he still did. Was sorry to see him go.

  16. Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins . . . what a classic radio personality. His weekend overnight shows on KGO were a visit into his imaginary purple grotto where all of his callers were welcome.

  17. I was under the impression that cumulus wanted to change its programming to a younger audience, That is why I am confused that the infomercials are all geared to old retired (or soon-to-be) folks. Tsk, tsk.

Does cumulus have no pride? Why did it stomp on one of the best radio stations in the country? Tell me the decimation of KGO isn't a joke.

NPR for me, plus I have grown rather fond of George Noory on Coast-to-Coast. He ain't Ray.
