Monday Media Minutiae

They don't need Ashley Madison to set up sensual nooners and discreet late evening romantic encounters. A fairly decent amount of Bay Area media mavens--male and female--plan their sexual rodeos on a nighty basis at some strategic media gulch restaurants--namely, Kokkari, to begin with just one.

*Dear Bay Area TV women: You can lampoon LA TV News women all you like. They're generally a lot more business savvy than YOU all are. One ex-Bay Area hottie now working in the Ell-Lay market: "This is the big leagues--San Francisco is Mayberry."

*KTVU's Heather Holmes has told her circle of friends that she wants "major presence" at the station or she's gone. Translation: Holmes wants a more weekday presence --anchoring one of the early evening newscasts and doing fill-in at 10. Only problem is that KTVU seems set in its line-up and would not be able to cater to Holmes' wishes. Expect some in-house Fox guidance to Holmes in the form of a goody bag, probably a little more money. They like her.

*KRON's weekend mystery: Veteran anchor beauty, Vicki Liviakis has been absent from the 11 PM newscast the past few weeks. Nobody wants to talk about it. Except me. I'm on it.

*Dear Jennifer Jones-Lee: When a serious news story is being read, your HORRIFIC giggle is not only out of place, it sounds pathetic and ridiculous.

*Another uber-annoying giggle: KCBS' sub-contractor traffic reporter, Kiffany Wittstrom.

*KNBR: "Thee White-Guy Leader." All-white radio station with 1 token gay woman and Black guy. Otherwise, it's all San Leandro.

*KGO-TV has a weekend night "issue" that will require something more heavy-duty than the News Director. Enter Disney.

*Dave Clark of KTVU no longer has that picture of himself and OJ Simpson on his desk. Good thinking, Dave.

*Da Lin and Erika Kato? You gotta be kidding me!

*Sal Castaneda could become the third highest-paid personality at KTVU when his contract is up if those in the know tell me the right stuff.

*On the radar: Peggy Bunker, NBC Bay Area (KNTV)

95.7 has 1 token black guy and no woman. What's your point? And don't say you count Anna or Gianna because they can't host a show on their own whereas Kate has hosted on her own several times. And at least the token black guy on KNBR doesn't fight a losing with the English language every day.

    1. Rod may speak English, but his...his...his... stuttering while trying to...to...to...put together his thoughts makes him...uh...wha...hard to listen to. Fitz & Brooks University needs to offer a speech course for Rod - along with an ethics class for Boob.

Hilarious and well-written. But more than anything, it's the verbosity...

    3. Pompous Rod pretty much thinks the world revolves around him and sadly that world is a mere dust particle.....what a putz

  2. He might be a nice guy but Sal Castanada is just phoning it in. His reports consist of "Traffic is good in some places and bad in others." Really? How does that help me? He just brings up cameras and describes the picture. This morning he never mentioned the Millbrae ramps were closed. A couple weeks ago there were big problems on the Dumbarton and San Mateo Bridges for over an hour and he never mentioned them. Everyone else did. One time they went to him and he was reading the newspaper! Watch anyone else give traffic in the morning and you'll realize how lazy his reports are. Traffic authority?

  4. San Leandro is pretty diverse. Alamo maybe would be a better metaphor ?

You're trying to hard to be politically correct, and in doing so, you're insulting the gay woman and black man who you are referring to as "token". No, they aren't token. They got their jobs by having talent in their chosen profession. Would you prefer that KNBR filled their jobs by ensuring that they have whatever you feel is the appropriate percentage of each minority group regardless of talent and abilities? I'm so sick of any organization being criticized simply because they don't have a particular breakdown of races/sexual orientation/eye color/foot size, whatever.

You've obviously never heard Lorenzo Neal try to string together 2 sentences without butchering the english language. Just as with Aubrey Huff, Lorenzo may have had talent on the field but behind the mic, he's a disaster and ethnicity has zero to do with it. Thank god for national shows and apps like TuneIn.

OK, I think you get the gist of my point though, which is precisely as you stated, ethnicity has nothing to do with it. I'm not going to assume anyone got hired because of their ethnicity, and I don't believe an organization should be criticized because they don't have a particular mix of ethnicities. Whoever can do the job should get the job, and unless there's some evidence or racism, pointing at an organization and saying "Thee White-Guy Leader" is pointless.

  6. I knew it. I just knew it. The moment KTVU announced its new lineup on the 4/7 and Holmes wasn't mentioned, I knew there would be trouble (and I said so too right here on this blog). I'll bet her nose is out of joint and deservedly so. She got passed over...and for what...a near nobody and an out of towner. If I were her I'd definitely be bent. And I would start looking elsewhere. Both 7 and 11 could use her. KPIX seems set.

I'd like to see her at KNTV on the AM....Bunker is prettier though!

  7. Every second that Sal is speaking is a second that Dave Clark's mouth is shut (or if not shut, that nonsense gas is not coming out of his mouth). Worth ever cent.

    1. This is why Brian Flores would be a suitable replacement for Dave
Clark. I never thought I'd say this but Flores is a breath of fresh air as Clark's substitute. It's not that Flores is that good it's that Dave Clark is so bad.

  9. LOL at heather holmes having friends. She is despised inside JLS and deservedly so, she never misses an opportunity to prove she cares more about her perfect hair and social media presence than the news and community she supposedly serves

  10. maybe instead of pitching fits being a brat and claiming unfairness Heather Homes should take a look in the mirror before... oh wait

  11. @insidecablenews: the bottom line is the reason Heather Holmes gets passed over again and again is because she doesn't deserve it! If it was a beauty pageant maybe, but this is news and if she can'tget through one script without screwing it up because she's preoccupied what makes you think it will be better on a bigger show? I say she's lucky to still be on weekends, plenty of other better, more professional anchors in the building

    1. Personally, she wouldn't win any beauty pageant I was judging.

    2. Sorry, but Fox2 is now Fox.... where beauty and legs matter. ... and they will pay for it. Look at the leg shows at Fox11 (LA)....

  14. What's your problem with KNBR having not enough "minorities"? How many white folks DJ at stations like KBLX? I don't know, I don't listen, but how about at the station with the La Raza bumperstickers, how many "white" folks work there?

    1. Out of 5 current local DJs on KBLX, one is white- Sterling James and another is Mexican Victor Zaragosa. In fact KBLX, even when it was black owned boasted a diverse lineup. One of the best and faves was Asian Doug Lee who was there for MANY years. Doug McConnell (contracted from a traffic source) was a mainstay and a favorite for MANY years on the morning show doing traffic until Cumulus bought them and overhauled the station (for worse).

on KISQ, of the 5 main DJs, two are black, one white, and the other two Mexican...

There are more white and Latino DJ's playing "urban" music on local stations than blacks... so that dog don't hunt my friend.

  15. I listened to Erica Kato for a mind-numbing 2 hours Friday night while stuck in the 101 backup (KNBR did not have any traffic on post-game so I had no idea what was going on). She repeated the same exact thing in every report. No helpful information, and I believe her info was pretty inaccurate. I ended up driving through pylons and in reverse to get off at the SFO offramp, which she never even suggested as an alternate. All she said (ON REPEAT) was to use 380, but for those of us past 380... what? She didn't even say SFO was an option. Thankfully I am an intelligent person and figured it out.
While she may be good enough to be on TV traffic where people are not in their cars, she's much too 'green' for KCBS. I pity the next major traffic event with her behind the mic.
