Michael Savage Goes Off On The American Killer Of Cecil The Lion; Takes Segment To Villify Animal Murder; KSFO/Syndicated Talker Offers Compelling Account

Cecil the lion--one of the most famous big cats in Zimbabwe's national parks--was murdered by an American hunter. The details are gruesome enough and we normally wouldn't pour over this as a media story only its been reported all over the globe, even in Bay Area circles.

We bring up Cecil because our local angle involves America's second-most-listened to, syndicated-radio talk host, Michael Savage.

It was Savage, who on his show (heard here on KSFO) Monday, devoted a segment on the incredibly brutal assault on Cecil; to a point where it was gut-wrenching and emotionally painful to listen but listenable nonetheless and necessary --I'm glad someone here spoke out.

Image via michaelsavage.comSavage, you may not know, is an extreme animal lover. I say extreme because he treats his 11 year-old poodle, Teddy, as a member of the family. Teddy sits in on most shows and Savage feeds his canine hero with gourmet chicken --to hell with kibbles and bits. Savage loves dogs and often links stories about them on his website.

So it is no surprise that Savage, the often flamboyant host would take the time and highlight the ghoulish fate of Cecil.

It was not unexpected and made for some compelling radio. Bravo Michael Savage.

  1. Kudos Michael Savage from another extreme animal lover (Guardian to 2 shelter house cats plus co-provider to 6 stray cats) No I'm not Christine but a male lifelong 61-year-old extreme animal lover.

  2. Not to troll or anything, but it isn't really "murder" when it's an animal (although my beloved cat Mr. Pickles would disagree with me). Under the law one cannot murder a corpse, a corporation, a non-human animal, or any other non-human organism such as a plant or bacterium.

I heard a side news story on KCBS while they were reporting on the Kathryn Steinle murder. While dredging the bay right there, they found a drowned cat in a bag. The reporter interviewed an animal shelter rep and both referred to the cat death as murder, sounding totally ridiculous. Especially regards to the shooting. When the story was repeated 40 minutes later (it's KCBS after all) they dropped the word "murder" as well as the interview with the shelter rep.

Doesn't matter. An innocent and unsuspecting animal was viciously ambushed and killed. If scores of people want to slap the "murderer" label on the coward who did it, so be it.

    2. Under the law one cannot murder a non- human animal, eh? We're not in a court of law. We're in the court of public opinion, where metaphors are used to express our thoughts and feelings. So quit acting like you're so smart and everyone else is a dummy!
And to those who say, "I never thought I'd agree with Dr. Savage" - take a walk! You may as well go around with a sign on your forehead that says, "I'm a dumbass."

    1. Was thinking the same thing. He may be a good candidate for veganism considering his love for animals and his hate for corrupt industries (meat & dairy industry) that are backed by the government and are literally destroying the environment as well as torturing animals. Would love to see him get educated in this category and help expose it for what it really is!

  4. Good on Savage. A real man doesn't bait a beloved animal from its sanctuary, shoot it with an arrow and allow it to writhe in pain for 40 hours before finishing it off with a rifle.

  5. Poor Cecil. Somewhere a Democrat wants to grind his teeth down and snort it or make it into a soup because they thinks it gives them virility or wards off evil spirits or some nonsense.

Indeed, Cecil was an ANIMAL. Animals kill to survive, not for sport, and not to attempt to prove their questionable virility.

And I'll rhapsodize as often and as long as I goddamn want to, you amoral asshat. Clearly you're in no position to pontificate from a moral high ground.

You, by dint of your lacking compassion and empathy make yourself appear to be a psychopath. Too bad there's no open bow hunting season on psychopaths. A slow and agonizing death seems a fitting end for any psychopath, in exchange for all the misery they bring into the world, during their callous, uncaring, self-centered lives.

Go research on Google about all of this dentist's global exploits with inhumanely killing dozens of different kinds and sizes of wildlife for nothing other than SPORT. Not food, not survival; but a trophy to hang on a wall. I suspect that you and he would be kindred souls... if either of you had a soul, that is.

      Little men. TINY... LITTLE... MEN.

But this Dentist is an Asshole, plain and simple, and anyone else who goes on these big game hunts to boost their ego with a head on their wall. The more rare or endangered they are the more they want them. I don't care if the animal is being selected for a cull. But for sure it's is completely unacceptable to lure a half tame Lion across some unseeable line so this asshole can shoot him with an arrow while he has guards right beside him with rifles just in case. If there is one single law or regulation violated I say extradite him and issue max punishment !

Well, the sentient is sweet, but the k&bs are better nutritionally for a dog than gourmet chicken. Dogs need more fat and less lean protein than humans.

  15. I agree with Savage's stance on the human race. It is by far the most selfish and self destructive species on the planet. Almost like we don't belong here. What a tragedy, the killing of such a majestic animal. In general, all predators are endangered. They require a lot of territory and don't reproduce as quickly as other animals. I agree all hunting for sport should be banned. Anyone who takes life for their own pleasure doesn't deserve life. This person must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If something "bad" happens to him, so be it.

  17. I've been an avid hunter for 24 years. (I am a TV news photog in my "day job.")

I started out hunting w/my grandpa and dad when I was 12-years old; my dad and MY 12-year old son continue to hunt today (ducks and deer, mainly). We use tents; yeah, we have down-filled sleeping bags and propane camping stoves (My son even brings along his iPad, to play games at night). But we don't use any high-tech gadgets or have a staff at our side. We pretty much cook up hot dogs, beans, freeze-dried eggs...normal "camping" fare. We have a couple of Retrievers to fetch our downed ducks/

What this idiot does is NOT hunting. These so-called "Big Game" hunters lounge around in five-star accommodations...are served gourmet meals...and are waited on hand-and-foot by a staff of servants. As part of the "Hunting Package", there are probably four or five "spotters" who use high-tech tracking devices to track animals. Once a trophy-sized target is spotted, the "hunter" is then called out to the spot...where all he has to do is fire his damn gun or bow (in this case, I bet this guy used a $3K graphite/titanium bow).

    This isn't hunting.

In this case, this lion was practically tame...living on a Game Preserve. They had to lure him out with meat.

I sure hope this loser is proud of his "accomplishment."

  19. Dr. Palmer made a statement that he's sorry and that he was doing WHAT HE LOVED (namely, killing animals for trophies) ... So, he LOVES to kill things! Someone should put a BOUNTY OF Palmer's head. Let's see how he likes that. I think $10 million might be a good start. By the way, he didn't wound Cecil with a bow and arrow, he did it with a CROSSBOW!!

  21. Anyone who is attempting to argue that the UNSPEAKABLE MURDER of Cecil is anything less than Murder ONE and should be prosecuted as such, needs to check their own DNA. . . obviously some major mutation has occurred. . . these are NOT human beings! To lure the magnificent old lion out of his sanctuary to shoot with a bow (NOTHING MORE PAINFUL), allow the innocent animal to bleed to death, skin and cut off his head. . . . THERE ARE NO WORDS, and the only REMOTELY JUST punishment would be to strip this disgusting piece of excrement, set him loose in the wild, and let the native bow-hunters hunt him down so he could experience the fear and lingering death that he imposed on the magnificent lion, Cecil. AND THIS WOULD BE TOO GOOD FOR HIM!! GOOD FOR YOU, MICHAEL SAVAGE, FOR TAKING THIS UP!!!!!

  22. This he-man dentist got a well deserved verbal drubbing on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LzXpE1mjqA&feature=youtu.be

Dr. Palmer will be lucky if he can buy off the African authorities and avoid doing time in a Zimbabwean prison for poaching. Of course, money always speaks loudly, especially in the Third World. Meaning that he'll probably walk free.

He'll need that mobility to seek some other form of professional employment, now that his dental practice has been financially destroyed by his bad press on the Net. He now rightfully appears like nothing more than the testosterone-poisoned anachronism that he is.

Personally, I'd rather that Dr. Palmer continue to roam free, so that maybe some day I can read on the Net about one of his future "safaris" going horribly wrong. A suitable scenario would be for him to receive three feet of tusk, from a cross-bow wounded and enraged bull elephant, as a rectal suppository. That would occur, shortly before him being trampled into the dirt in the circular shape of an extra-large Veldt pizza.

    2. Follow this link to better understand the commonly employed literary device that's found in my message: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hyperbole

In particular, I see no need to show compassion or empathy for this dentist, whose chosen actions seem to most reasonable and compassionate people to be shallow, inhumane, sadistic, and entirely self serving. He could have saved himself almost $50,000 by simply telling his personal physician that he had problems that a prescription for little blue pills could have quickly, cheaply, and humanely resolved.

That lion spent roughly 40 hours in pain and agony, due to a crossbow bolt perforating its body. That agony continued until the lion was humanely dispatched, beheaded, and skinned.

The GPS collar laying near the headless lion cadaver allowed the Zimbabwean authorities to track down the location of the lion-poaching evidence, which undoubtedly will be used in the prosecution of not only Dr. Palmer, but also his hunting "guides," the moral reprobates who baited the lion to lure him away from the protection of the sanctuary where he was located, so he could be killed for SPORT, by Dr. Palmer..

Would you similarly advocate for understanding, painless humane treatment, and moral understanding of someone like Adolf Hitler, or Josef Stalin, or Pol Pot?? Of course you wouldn't. So, why should I, or any other reasonable person, advocate for the compassionate understanding and treatment of someone who himself has shown no compassion in his inhumane treatment of the lion, and numerous other wildlife that he has killed in the past for SPORT?

  23. I think most posters here are piling on, wishing harm and loss to this dentist as a way to feel better about themselves. Do you all feel more pure now, having virtually drawn and quartered this man? Do you no longer believe in forgiveness, or redemption, or are you all simply too fucking perfect too bother with such niceties anymore? Look at yourselves, listen to your push button rage at a named target. Doesn't this remind anyone of the Taliban or the Nazi's? If not, it should.
My give-a-damn-o-meter is not lighting up on this one.

    1. No, what reminds me of the Taliban is folks wanting to dig up people out of a memorial gravesite and move the corpse because they disagree with the person's role in history. Or folks who want to take down a statue because they disagree with the individual memorialized by the statue's role in history. And so on and so forth.

Wishing this dentist to have a fate based on his actions is Justice.

CAIR learned this, illegals have learned this, his syndicator (the one he recently won the lawsuit against) learned this, leftist KGO talk hosts (2 come to mind - can you guess who they are?) learned this, and eventually Britain will learn this.

  27. So I guess what happened in Santa Cruz to Maddie wasn't really murder as the 15-year old MEXICAN BOY (name released on media, kid's mother was Mexican descent when I saw on KPIX TV) didn't meant to kill Maddie as it was like a game gone wrong and that the kid doesn't deserve adult charges, and heck, doesn't deserve to be deported either, though he should regardless of legal or not. What happened to Cecil is every bit, though different, like what happened to Maddie in Santa Cruz. That person should be in a jail with that Mexican kid. Glad Savage took it out on the Lion Killer.

  30. Love Teddy. He treats Teddy and talks to him like my late parents talked to their two poodles. I recently listened to him when he admonished Teddy (as if a regal poodle can be admonished by a human being!) to stop barking. Classic radio. You won't hear it anywhere else. That is the magic that radio is missing these days. Spontaneity. The opposite of the corporate credo of expensive suits filled with followers rather than trail-blazers. Whether you like Mr. Savage or not, he's a trailblazer. Only thing is, no one is waiting in the wings, sadly.

As far as the politics, our lives aren't even a blip in human history, so I suppose I have a more nuanced view than some. And, perhaps I'm a bit hardened because I've covered hundreds of politicians in my career, from elementary school boards to congressional and senate candidates, to several California governors. I guess I've heard all the promises more than once. They just dress 'em up differently. Same old song. I tune it out.

Love the Jag, too. Classic. I photographed one at Davenport a few years ago that looked really similar to that one. Exact same color. Don't know if it was Mr. Savage, but I don't bother people when I shoot cars, especially if they are well-known.

A former hunter who was one of my two mentors in photojournalism told me he put down his hunting guns and took up photographing animals. Wish the trophy hunters would do the same. Mr. Savage puts his money where his words are. That should be praised. Thank you, Mr. Savage, for your donations that we will never know about.

I like Mr. Savage the best when he talks about Teddy, elephants, his love of other noble creatures, his botanical forays and research, his crazy Uncle Savage routines, his recollections and views when he contrasts his opinion of today's America with that of, say, the 50s or 60s or 70s, in a cultural sense. It's like Uncle Louie live, even though Uncle Louie's been dead since the 70s.

I understand the business he is in, and that many listeners like the politics, but Mr. Savage, I think, would be happier doing his stream-of-consciousness shows. It's a type of radio that is disappearing. In fact, one could say that Mr. Savage is the last one left of a grand Bay Area (and perhaps U.S.) radio tradition that featured all kinds of characters, some of whom used to work at the once-famous KGO Radio, now known for its infamy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I also love Mr. Savage's choice of music. I remember last year or so (my timing may be off), when a media critic lampooned Mr. Savage for his choice of music, and also for what she considered his lack of religious rigor.

I love the music. It helps create an ambiance that other shows lack.

And, as far as his religion lack of religion or whatever it is that Mr. Savage believes: I don't care. None of my business. My philosophy is like my Mom used to say: to each his/her own (if it still legal to use his and her and he and she).

And, for those who criticize him on religious grounds: we all live in glass houses; we are all hypocrites at one time or another. Live and let live, whatever religion or no religion you have. The world is big enough for all of us.
